RJ Mitte (Walt Jr) has passed 😥
Wow, I was shocked to hear this. They are saying it was suicide. So sad. He was only 34 years old. RIP, Flynn ❤️

I can't believe this
This guy was underrated as an actor. Something that really stuck out to me on my rewatch was the talking pillow scene.
He's sitting there acting his ass off, holding his own with Dean Norris, Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn. At the age of 16! His inexperience could have stuck out but nope, not at all, he hung with them the whole way. That's a feat at 16.
He also sounded like a hilarious guy, if you ever listened to the commentary tracks. Sounded genuinely fun to be around
RIP RJ

u/itisthelord 7h ago
The scene where he's in Walt's little apartment thing is overlooked too. Cranston does an outstanding job breaking down and telling him he's sorry but RJ's face double breaks my heart. Fuck man he was such a nice dude when I met him. It hurts when good people are taken too soon and even worse when good people feel the need to go so soon.
I hope he's at peace. Doesn't even feel real.

Or the scene where he’s protecting his mom from Walt. It was incredibly well-acted.

u/Lux_Luthor_777 8h ago edited 1h ago
I love how in that specific scene, you can see RJ laughing his ass off in the background as Hank unwraps the cheese platter and starts going to town on it. LMAO. You can see it on the left side of the shot, RJ trying to suppress laughter at Hank. The best thing is that even if he was laughing at the actor’s great performance, it still fit with the scene.
ETA: It’s the family intervention scene in season one, episode 5, “Gray Matter.”

Man the scene wheres hes protecting skylar from Walter and calls the police genuinely made my 36 year old male arse well up. He did a brilliant job.

u/TLMAriel1989 5h ago
Bryan and Anna were fantastic but hardly anyone talks about how integral RJ was in making that scene so powerful as well. Flynn learned everything about Walt’s double life and Skyler’s complicity in probably the span of an hour and then discovered his beloved uncle was murdered due to his father; then having to make the choice to protect his mother after she protected him and turn in his father. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions and events to portray and he nailed it, your heart was broken for Flynn.

A lot of people who take their life are happy right beforehand, as they've made the decision & I guess feel like a weight has lifted. Really sad.
•
u/Due_Air_7255 5h ago
I think that is definitely part of it but I also think the happiness before hand is a swing of the pendulum and later on that day/night the pendulum swings again and the low lows are when it occurs. Before my suicide attempt I was very happy that day and the day before and none of it was due to me thinking "haha im fixing to killmyself this is great."

Ahh, see, for me it was like, I was miserable for months & months before I made the decision, and then the moment I made the decision, I was free. None of the things that I’d been worried/stressed about mattered anymore, none of my responsibilities weighed on me, and I was the happiest I’d ever been in my life. I pushed the date back 3x just to live in that bubble a little longer. Waited a whole week to actually make the attempt.

It's crazy how we let things weigh on us to such a disproportionate degree that we let it take away all our happiness.
Maybe that's why as humans we love dogs, they just live freely then when they go they go.

Depression wears you down. You want to escape it. And you do, by having a good night out with friends or playing a game that gets you there. You might have even had one of the best times in what feels like forever. But you know, this reprieve from the burden of depression will also end. The reprieve always ends. The darkness is going to grab you like it always does. The darkness is relentless. No matter how many times you get away, depression gets you again. And again. And again. You're tired. You don't want depression to control your life. So you won't. You can get away, for good, and end the back and forth. You will bask in the recent memory of your friends, your laughs, and your smiles. That is what you think, right to the very end.

Battlestar Galactica has one of the best depictions of suicide that I've ever seen, and it really put me in perspective how a suicidal person could be trying to find some last few moments of joy to die with it. It's long gone, the decision is made, but let me have some good beforehand. It's really sad and touching.

Someone in our friend group commited suicide a decade or so ago. The people close to him commented how happy he was on the day he did it. He saw family, ran a bath, played computer games, then did the deed. It almost felt like once he'd made the decision that today was the day, a big weight was lifted off his shoulders.

Someone with mental health issues having a sudden and unexplained swell of happiness (when that is not normal for their baseline) is one of the biggest warning signs I was taught.
For anyone else who may be unawares, other things to look out for that aren't really talked about:
Giving away or discarding things they cared for before. (I.e., books, hobby supplies, treasured collections, etc.)
Suddenly cleaning their home/room/whatever, getting things "in order".
Being reckless, socially or physically. Socially could also be just bringing up things from the past, or trying to settle old issues.
Of course everyone is different, but if you know someone who struggles or has struggled with their mental health, it never hurts to know things that could be signs.

Nobody expects suicide because people never go "hey everybody, just letting you know that I'm severely depressed and this weekend I'm planning to blow my brains out". If only the signs were that obvious. It's always much more subtle, if there's even any signs at all

I mean he's definitely dead but this story about his suicide is just a tabloid quoting an anonymous county official. It may well be true but it feels a little early to be discussing his supposed hidden pain. Obviously some situations make the intent obvious but it could just as easily have been something accidental.

Yeah there's a lot to criticize about TMZ. Lack of accuracy just isn't one of them, they have deep networks in police departments, hospitals, coroner's offices etc so they can get tipped off right away
13
u/TheAllyCrime 6h ago
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TMZ
I mean, just a few years ago they reported Jerry Lee Lewis’s death before it even happened, and claimed Lil’ Wayne was in a coma breathing through tubes when he had actually already been released from the hospital.
In their “zeal” for breaking stories TMZ isn’t afraid to cut corners. They could very easily have published unfounded claims about suicide, which they can just retract later on without any real consequences.

That's fucking terrible.
Maybe it's too soon to say this but I've heard him talk about a lot of horror stories in terms of trying to be an actor (his manager defrauded him for years for example, tons of money just lost).
I feel like this stuff is going to come up a lot in the upcoming days/weeks - even if it isn't the main factor, hearing him talk about that over the years always made me sad/worry about him.
Even though he's pretty famous I can't imagine the guy had a drastically different life than anyone lower/middle class.
328
u/Big-Horse3925 7h ago
Living with a lifelong disease, even one that's "totally manageable and you can totally live a perfectly normal life!", isn't a struggle most people understand either, let alone one that significantly, visibly impacts your life, too. I wouldn't doubt that could play a significant part in it.
82
u/BarderBetterFaster 6h ago
I imagine it's similar to chronic pain. You can't understand how much that takes from you until you've lived it. Waking up and having to fight through every day just to maintain normalcy takes a heavy toll.

The guy was adopted, his adopted parents divorced and he lived with his adopted mom and her natural daughter, who was much younger than him
When Mitty was 13 his mom got paralyzed, leaving him the breadwinner for his mom, sister and himself.
The child acting paid the bills. Then he landed Breaking Bad and life changing money.
.... which his manager stole....

So I used to act no where near his level, or the success of breaking bad. Even my little straight to dvd movies fucked me up. Being at the height of your life at that point full of hope and thinking it’s only going to go up from there, just to slowly see your dream die. My mom tried acting. She also was a singer and a ballet dancer. It absolutely broke her. People were so cruel and spoke about her as if she was an object. She was devastated because her dream was dead and her confidence was shattered. She recently sang publicly for the first time since she was in her twenties, at age 60. It took that long for her to heal from that.

Somebody on a Reddit post about RJ last year said
"His financial manager also defrauded him, by using his tax checks for her own spending, rather than actually paying taxes. She also showed faked receipts about having payed the taxes. This continued over several years and interest was accumulating on his tax debt. At the end he spent 10 years paying back his taxes and interest, costing him pretty much all of his earnings from breaking bad."

Well that’s horrible. This has just been the year of horrific, unexpected deaths. God help him and his family.

u/PleasantNightLongDay 8h ago
Is there a cause of death yet?
I knew the guy somewhat (enough to have had his phone number) and attended a wedding where he was there just a few days/weeks ago. He seemed fine health wise.
Rip. He was a good guy
Edit. Just read the news. Jeeze. That’s terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Rip.

This is absolutely devastating, mental health is not taken anywhere near seriously enough by society, it’s so horribly sad.
Check in on your friends and family 😞

I look at the Wikipedia List of Recent Deaths every day. I saw his name just now, and the cause, and my jaw dropped. Wow. :/

I was getting back into BB/BCS this weekend, this really hit me hard and this is honestly terrible. He was an icon for actors with disabilities.

Met him once when he came to speak at my high school many years ago. He was a super down to earth guy and honestly similar in person to how he was in the show. RIP.

When we watched BB live our youngest was a toddler and had just been diagnosed with CP, it was a scary time. It sounds so silly, but this was the only space where a character was presented as a human first, and, oh, also, he has CP, anyways. Any other show they make shit like that the defining arc for the character, as well as for the parents, and it’s the worst thing ever. I’ve never seen things presented that way; and I’m very grateful that Mitte did such an amazing job at portraying the character he did, it meant a lot to us at a time that we were struggling and lost. We saw that it could also be totally fine in the future, this didn’t have to define our kid, her name could come first, not her disability. She is 14 now, and we are in a space now where CP isn’t scary at all anymore. RJ Mitte was a wonderful advocate that will continue to have impact for a long time for many.

I loved his portrayal of Jr. His work means the world to me. He was wonderful on the show, Flynn might not have been everyone's favorite, but he was mine. Rj did so much with Jr, it touched my heart each time.
His family had a presence in my hometown area. My bio dad had a few exchanges with him. Such a heavy day. He seemed like a sweet person.

This truly horrific. I was just watching an old interview of his and how he didn’t want to use his disability to hinder his dreams of acting.
He did his role so well in the show too. Fucking shit man.

Literally just finished rewatching Breaking Bad two weeks ago. Loved him as an actor and even more as a human. Rest in Paradise, king.

Fuck man this is so sad. I haven’t been shocked like this by a celebrity death in a while. Way way too young. I hope he’s at peace

Ah man that’s way too young. He could have had decades of fun at conventions talking about the role. Even sadder if it is self-inflicted

This is tragic. RJ was only 34, and engaged to be married. He was a bright light in a dark world. I will keep RJ, Bryan and Aaron in my thoughts.

Well, in this case it was self-inflicted. This also applies to James Ransone who was only 46.
Personally I find feeling like the best days are behind you can be absolutely devastating and I hope it’s not the feelings that pushed these talented individuals

He left an indelible mark with his performance in Breaking Bad.
I've read that he used the show's popularity to bring awareness towards disability.
May his soul rest in peace.
