RJ Mitte (Walt Jr) has passed 😥

Wow, I was shocked to hear this. They are saying it was suicide. So sad. He was only 34 years old. RIP, Flynn ❤️

Battlestar Galactica has one of the best depictions of suicide that I've ever seen, and it really put me in perspective how a suicidal person could be trying to find some last few moments of joy to die with it. It's long gone, the decision is made, but let me have some good beforehand. It's really sad and touching.

Someone in our friend group commited suicide a decade or so ago. The people close to him commented how happy he was on the day he did it. He saw family, ran a bath, played computer games, then did the deed. It almost felt like once he'd made the decision that today was the day, a big weight was lifted off his shoulders.

Yup. A friend of mine in high school was all laughter and smiles and then a few hours later he was gone. It was awful…

Someone with mental health issues having a sudden and unexplained swell of happiness (when that is not normal for their baseline) is one of the biggest warning signs I was taught.

For anyone else who may be unawares, other things to look out for that aren't really talked about:

  • Giving away or discarding things they cared for before. (I.e., books, hobby supplies, treasured collections, etc.)

  • Suddenly cleaning their home/room/whatever, getting things "in order".

  • Being reckless, socially or physically. Socially could also be just bringing up things from the past, or trying to settle old issues.

Of course everyone is different, but if you know someone who struggles or has struggled with their mental health, it never hurts to know things that could be signs.

Yes. I had a friend who took his own life after being severely depressed for about two years and in the month leading up to it everyone thought he was recovering and getting to a better place. Jesus

Same with someone I knew. Others commented on how he seemed happier that day

this and other similar comments in this thread are mildly irresponsible because they can convince suicidal people that they'll feel better once they commit to killing themselves

It would be irresponsible not to comment, when sudden abnormal happiness in a clinically depressed person is a giant red flag that they have made the choice to end their life - something most people would likely want to know if they have a loved one that suffers from depression.

Yeah. It’s weird how even if you have chosen a day to commit, you still have to get dressed that day, eat food, maybe go to work, clearly play video games in RJ’s case

I had an acquaintance that messaged me like a lot more than usual one night. I was busy playing SC2 ladder matches and I didn't have much time to play at night because I had a job and two young kids, so I just went through the pleasantries. Just basic how are you and shit, didn't dig in to see why she might be messaging. Offline for 15 years now.

God damn thats a deep cut from season 4.

I thought they were just trying to get rid of her character before the finale not make a statement.

For a deeper cut, I still remember the first ad when they went to commercial after that scene was for Campbell's tomato soup, which iirc had some red soup splashing visuals.

But no, I'm pretty sure they were trying to make a point about the nature of despair and how the happiest people can be hiding a lot of deep pain. I was upset as hell because it was so shocking, but I understood why they did it and why they didn't use another character.

My uncle did this a few decades ago. He's always been reclusive and hardly spoke with anyone but the day or two before he took his own life, people mentioned he was out and about, talking to everyone in the family and neighbors and cracking jokes.
