RJ Mitte (Walt Jr) has passed 😥

Wow, I was shocked to hear this. They are saying it was suicide. So sad. He was only 34 years old. RIP, Flynn ❤️

So, RJ has been deceased for a couple hours and instead of waiting to let the family process it, TMZ just rushed to report it? Little fuckers.

It's not just TMZ reporting. BBC also have it on their front page.

Albeit the BBC have refrained from stating the cause.

TMZ broke the story, though, which is what makes them the biggest vultures

There's no real point in outlets like BBC refraining from reporting it at that point

Not to sound callous, but if they got the news first they would.

Maybe. I assume most reputable outlets would have waited for word from the representatives, though, which is what separates them from TMZ. I don't think the BBC are champing at the bit to report on a young actor's suicide without confirmation

Why would you think that BBC would wait until an official representative announcement?

•

Because that's what happened today—their article on RJ Mitte's death was only published after his representative responded to them. They're not a gossip site and don't rush to report on celebrity news like this; they require two independent, verified sources for these stories

So if they did have two independent, verified sources, you think they’d wait for a representative statement anyways? Even though they have everything fully confirmed based on their own guidelines?

TMZ likely did too. Say what you want about their slimeyness, but their speed and accuracy on celeb deaths is legendary.

They don't until the family definitely know and they don't publish speculation on causes like TMZ have done. They stick to facts announced by family or authorities

They've even got a false picture of RJ on their page

And TMZ are the only source mentioning suicide and are saying they were told it was by an unspecified official. They've got things wrong before but because they got there first people remember their version

BBC, CBS, ABC, CNN...wanna bitch about them all because you didn't get a personal phone call?

I loved the guy but I'm not the first person to contact because I didn't know him. What are you on about?

This is the correct response. TMZ is trash made for garbage people. Everyone clicking their links supports all the horrific shit they've done.

True, and also fuck the person or people who may have tipped TMZ off for a quick buck instead of giving friends and family time to find out in a more compassionate way.

How long after someone has passed away makes it acceptable to report on it, according to u/No-Category-6343?

Probably no sooner than his family would be ready to disclose it, would be a start. Now bearing that in mind, do you think they learned that he passed and immediately went "We need to make sure the world knows!" ?

•

u/pancada_ 5h ago

Does it matter if they did it for altruistic reasons? This is literally how news work

🤦‍♂️

When I say "they" I mean his family. Did they find out their son was dead and think within a matter of hours it was best for it to be everyone else's business? It's not unheard of to make an announcement soon after but with TMZ that's often not the case. They've repeatedly broken news of notable deaths before family is ready to go public, including times where family found out from the news (I believe Kobe Bryant and his daughter was such a case) all because TMZ and similar outlets want to cash in on the tragedy.

Even if it is "how the news works" maybe the question is should it be? Or would the courteous and ethical thing be to let these families grieve and think about allowing the world to grieve with them on their own timeline without pressure?
