A Helping Hand 💖 Free Food/Laundry/Shower Resources in HRM - Oct. 2026

Hi all,

We have a lot of people in our community who are in need of a free meal or a helping hand occasionally.

We thought it would be nice to collect and post this information each month, which is graciously supplied by members of the Halifax Library. We'll see how long we can keep this going month to month.

The Dartmouth Calendar is back, but the Sackville one is a little low-res, apologies.

Please share as needed with people you know who need help or take advantage of them yourself if you are in need.

The Feed NS Find Food site is also a very useful resource:

https://feednovascotia.ca/find-food/

Always remember there are kind, generous folks out there looking to help you out and you can get through whatever you are going through. 💖

And if anyone else has resources that belong here, please attach them as comments, the more the merrier.

Thank you!

Gus the Tortoise 🐢 Gus' surgery was a success

From the museum -

"An update on Gus the gopher tortoise - October 13th, 2026.

The procedure to remove his bladder stone was a success, and he is resting comfortably with his care team.

Gus will remain with his veterinary care team for close observation for 48 hours, before returning to the museum later this week.

Gus will be recovering behind the scenes for the next 8-10 weeks, but we will continue to share updates on his recovery.

Thank you to his vet team for their excellent care of our beloved Gus and to everyone for your support and well wishes."

Discussion Would anyone be interested in monthly ladies’ brunches or dinners in Halifax?

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Halifax from Toronto, where I used to organize monthly ladies’ brunches and dinners. They became something I really looked forward to a chance to meet lovely women, share a meal, and have conversations that went beyond small talk.

We chatted about books, business ideas, goal setting, the economy and market updates, as well as whatever was happening in our lives. It was a lovely way to exchange perspectives, encourage each other, and build friendships.

I’d love to bring that same feeling here: a welcoming table where you can come on your own, feel included, and leave knowing a few new faces. 😊

Would you be interested?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, or any feedback!

Schools & Education HRCE/ province/ someone? fired my son's pre-primary lead, then asked her to sub for the position she was fired from.

My son's pre-preprimary teacher found out last Monday that she was being let go and that her last day was last Friday.

For context, she is lovely and the kids love her (I have four kids and they've all gone through pre-primary with varying degrees of good ECEs).

She, and I think a few others, were apparently let go because of low enrolment numbers across the HRCE and she is contract. She was told someone with a permanent ECE position would be moved into the role. And then last Friday, after tearful goodbyes with the kids, she was called and asked if she could sub for today (Tuesday) because they had no one to cover her now empty position, and was also then asked to sub for the rest of the week. Because they have no one. Despite literally a week ago having someone in the role.

So now she is subbing for an empty position which was her position and now no longer getting the benefits of contracted work.

The lack of forethought and care and planning and just like general competence of the people in charge in this province is honestly staggering. I don't know who ultimately makes the decisions in this situation, where the directive to fire someone comes from (is it all the way from the top? I don't know) but the instability it creates for not only a person who thought they had a guaranteed job for the year, but also the kids who are in this really tough transitional period in their lives is horrible.

News, Weather & Politics Dartmouth Hit and Run Suspect Apprehended

Hi everyone, saw this on Facebook and didn’t see a full release about it anywhere as I know we were all discussing it. Seems that the first hit and run on Sunday where they lost the truck seems to have had the suspect apprehended. Included the screenshot of the post here. Glad to see they found them - blurred the name due to the rules of the sub.

Part of the upgrades to the 54-year-old day care includes installing a new energy-efficient electric heat pump system, as the building is currently heated by an oil-filtered boiler and baseboard radiators from the 1970s. [...] [African Nova Scotian Affairs Minister Twila] Grosse, said the spending would also go toward upgrades like solar panels, new insulation, windows and doors and energy-efficient light fixtures.

Shops & Services ASAP Cleaner for senior home with "accidents"

Hi everyone

I'm looking for recommendations for a cleaner to come to a seniors' home while they are in the hospital to prep and clean their space so that they can come back to a safe and healthy home.

Important: There have been some bathroom-ish accidents that were left but it's not a hoarding situation. I need someone within the next few days and, of course, will pay an excellent wage for this vital service.

Thanks in advance.

Driving & Transit Bus ticket help

Thank you all! I am getting help with a buspass!

After being unemployed and on EI for many months, I have finally found a job that starts next week, but I have no way to get back and forth to work for the first few weeks. Does anyone know of any organizations that would help with some tickets? (Other than income assistance)

Traffic Windmill road - both lanes closed

Drivers: Both lanes of Windmill Road are closed today under the McDonald bridge.

Not sure if it will be an ongoing closure but I was surprised today. One lane to Alderney Drive was previously open until last week.

Detour to go to Alderney drive: Take right under the mcdonald bridge > Left to Fairbanks street > left at hare lane > back on windmill.

Note: shore road is one way partially and no-entry after Mott street. Noticed a few cars drive the wrong way to get to Geary street!!

Driving & Transit For the love of road safety, put a "keep right"and "do not enter" sign here before there's a head on collision!

Someone already went the wrong way here earlier this year. How is there no signage? There used to be.

Should add that I contacted 311 about this. Let's see how long it takes to get something out here.
