They are making the announcement at the Moncton Airport - maybe it's an investment in facilities for air export of fish?

I came away with the same read.
Refrigeration storage and air freight, perhaps.

Dammit. I didn't see it was fisheries related and thought they might announce we're finally going on permanent Daylight Saving Time.

The fish are sick of time change as well and have announced the ocean will observe permenant DST.

I was more pessimistic, I assumed data server mega builds

I was hoping it would be a gas saving incentive before I saw fisheries related 😭😅😂

Permanent daylight savings time is anti-science. We need permanent standard time.
•
u/lavenderavenues 11h ago
Nope. Never compromising on this. I'd shoot myself if it got dark at 8pm in the summer.

u/ricktencity 10h ago
Nah, you'd get used to it, occasionally grumble about back in your day it got dark at 9 in the summer. Standard aligns better with our circadian rhythms.

“The science” is not on your side here. There’s scientific arguments in favour of permanent daylight savings time too.

I’d like to see one.

Never heard of seasonal affective disorder?
How about mathematics? If there’s an extra hour of daily light every day when the vast majority of people are not sleeping, then there’s less demand for electricity. A pretty big chunk of the province will continue sleeping for an hour or two past sunrise in your preferred permanent standard time configuration.
This “The science” argument is almost entirely focussed on the circadian rhythm benefits of earlier sunlight, and earlier sunsets, but doesn’t really quantify how much better permanent standard time is on circadian rhythms. Moreover, this argument seems to almost entirely ignore that the biggest thing fucking up people’s circadian rhythms when it comes to light isn’t sunrise and sunset times, but is rather the blue light emitted from smart phones, computer screens, and televisions.
Are people more likely to go for a walk at 5pm after work if the sun is already set? Probably not, and they’d probably be more likely to sit on their couch and look at their phones instead.

They're announcing that they're making an announcement? Jeez must be real important

It’s a media advisory. The government website often posts several a day. They give media a heads up that something is being announced.

Are the provinces joining? Atlantica? Maritimeland? Just plain EAST?
•
u/KitTrailer 11h ago
Joke aside, I hope they announce about Daylight Saving Time.
Still feels fine if is not.

Can we just give the fish a break for year and end trawlling forever???!!! Employ /extend the EI the fisher-people to clean up all their ocean garbage while the fisheries replenish

Fun fact - in 1981 (ish) New Brunswick did not have a DFO “region” until Romeo Leblanc was named DFO minister, being from NB as MP, he influenced his friend Pierre Trudeau to establish a NB based region….Gulf …and now his son Dominic is best friends with Justin Trudeau…

I assume this might have something to do with cod stocks rebounding?

I thought Cod stocks were at critical levels earlier this year and average age of fish was declining?

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/nother-cod-catch-increase-9.7233129
For northern cod current catch quota is 5-7% of the population and sustainability standards is 20%. It’s expanding and quite healthy relative to the last 20 years, finally entering the “healthy” zone, but we should keep the quota low for now.
Unsure about the state of the other Atlantic stocks.

Thank you for sharing.
I was googling a bit and this is the article I remembered reading: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/atlantic-cod-stocks-continue-decline-parts-of-ns-nb-9.7184155.
Stocks in the Scotian Shelf and Bay if Fundy have been struggling after a few years of optimism.

I see a few comments speculating that this has something to do with cod and I just need to state that the cod stocks are NOT OKAY. Last year's cod stock assessment put them at risk of continued decline even at current fishing levels, with that risk going up significantly if additional fishing pressure was added. We should not increase the cod quota.
