Sightseeing & Tourism Good winter vacation trips around the maritimes?

My wife and I are looking for suggestions for a good way to spend the few days between Christmas and New Years and wouldn't mind getting out of town for a few days. Not wanting a big long trip (we're traveling far for a wedding in November) but something we can drive to in, say, 4-5 hours or less that's worth spending 3 or 4 days at in late December.

It'd just be the two of us (adults, late 40s) so no need for kid/family activities at all. Last year we drove to Charlottetown for 3 days and actually super enjoyed it: yeah everything touristy was shut down but we found nice shops and restaurants downtown and explored the city a little bit. Anything anyone can recommend would be welcome!

Additional context: we've only lived on this side of the country for a year and a half after a lifetime split between western Canada and Europe, so assume I've not seen much outside the HRM.

Driving & Transit car with no license plate looking to get quotes on fixing it up

So would I need to get it towed or is there a way to get a temporary plate to get to and from the shops, and with that would I need insurance?

I’ve never owned a car before, and had never been taught anything car related I mean I wouldn’t know where to even bring it or what the costs of anything are. I’ve been looking online but I would rather have some people with real experiences etc. just hoping for some suggestions or any insight.
Any help would be great!! Thanks.

Support Local SurgeProtocol Public Map Redesign

Thumbnail

The public version of SurgeProtocol has received a fresh UI overhaul.

Disclaimer: SurgeProtocol was built primarily using AI. It is not an alerting product and you should continue to follow the direction of official channels.

With that out of the way, what is SurgeProtocol?

SurgeProtocol is a public hazard map built for Nova Scotia, and part of a larger project I've undertaken to help improve Emergency Management in the province. One of the biggest complaints I've seen from people online was how scattered information was, often requiring navigation of multiple websites - so I consolidated everything into one easy to view place.

While the system right now is not an alerting product, my hope is that with the right partnerships future iterations of this will allow the operator version of this product to push updates to the public view, showing things like evacuation zones, emergency shelters, road closures and more.

I'm happy to answer any questions anyone may have and welcome any feedback on the tool itself as long as it is constructive.

Edit: changes from feedback in the comments. Outage totals now use Nova Scotia Power's published figures, the weather card's forecast link opens the Halifax forecast, and Tier 1 hospitals include the adult trauma centres.

Work, Health & Housing Would not recommend qe2 hospital to anybody

Hey to all I am posting this in regards to qe2 hospital to anybody in Halifax,

Here are the reasons why.

Number one my partner went in to go deal with his health via ambulance and the paramedics left him in the waiting room for over 24 hours and the paramedics and everybody there at Qe 2 refused him medical help due to what he’s been dealing with, since I had to go to my appointment on Monday last week and when we went back tonight to go and deal with it, the nurses refused to get the head nurse to see him to advocate for his well-being. We had called 811 and 811 thought it was mental health issues and it’s not mental health issues. It is a respiratory issue and pretty much all the nurses didn’t want to get the head nurse and refused him help and the nurse is basically gave him a waiver of a liability.

Secondly, you don’t treat your patience like they don’t exist.

Thirdly, why is there homeless people being taken in front of him when he has a respiratory issue.

It doesn’t make sense when somebody’s having a mental health crisis to go over to the ER instead of Abby Lane and vice versa.

What is this fucking hospital doing to everybody making everybody dead and sick?

May I add with an i.v in his arm he went home with it

Shops & Services Chair and glassware rental recommendations?

Does anyone have a chair and glassware rental recommendation in Halifax? I need about 30 folding chairs for a party as well as glasses, so not a big order. I'd always rather go with a recommendation than just choosing blindly from google. Many thanks!

Part of the upgrades to the 54-year-old day care includes installing a new energy-efficient electric heat pump system, as the building is currently heated by an oil-filtered boiler and baseboard radiators from the 1970s. [...] [African Nova Scotian Affairs Minister Twila] Grosse, said the spending would also go toward upgrades like solar panels, new insulation, windows and doors and energy-efficient light fixtures.

EDIT: The govenrment release is here: https://news.novascotia.ca/en/2026/10/13/government-invests-north-preston-child-care-centre

Discussion Would anyone be interested in monthly ladies’ brunches or dinners in Halifax?

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Halifax from Toronto, where I used to organize monthly ladies’ brunches and dinners. They became something I really looked forward to a chance to meet lovely women, share a meal, and have conversations that went beyond small talk.

We chatted about books, business ideas, goal setting, the economy and market updates, as well as whatever was happening in our lives. It was a lovely way to exchange perspectives, encourage each other, and build friendships.

I’d love to bring that same feeling here: a welcoming table where you can come on your own, feel included, and leave knowing a few new faces. 😊

Would you be interested?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, or any feedback!

Driving & Transit Bus ticket help

Thank you all! I am getting help with a buspass!

After being unemployed and on EI for many months, I have finally found a job that starts next week, but I have no way to get back and forth to work for the first few weeks. Does anyone know of any organizations that would help with some tickets? (Other than income assistance)

Shops & Services ASAP Cleaner for senior home with "accidents"

Hi everyone

I'm looking for recommendations for a cleaner to come to a seniors' home while they are in the hospital to prep and clean their space so that they can come back to a safe and healthy home.

Important: There have been some bathroom-ish accidents that were left but it's not a hoarding situation. I need someone within the next few days and, of course, will pay an excellent wage for this vital service.

Thanks in advance.

Shops & Services Wood Heating Pellet Options in Halifax?

Hello folks, I've come to ask about Pellets for my Pellet Stove.

In the past, we'd ordered from Kent and gotten a pallet of pellets (about 50-ish 40lb bags) for about 800 bucks. I was hoping to spend less than that and have had a bugger of a time finding somewhere. The places I found were either in Ontario or sketchy. Hard or Softwood, either *should* be fine, I think. Hoping to find somewhere before the cold actually sets in hard.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or leads, even if it's just "nah man that's the best deal around".

News, Weather & Politics Dartmouth Hit and Run Suspect Apprehended

Hi everyone, saw this on Facebook and didn’t see a full release about it anywhere as I know we were all discussing it. Seems that the first hit and run on Sunday where they lost the truck seems to have had the suspect apprehended. Included the screenshot of the post here. Glad to see they found them - blurred the name due to the rules of the sub.

Shops & Services Looking for a good accountant in HRM?

Hi everyone! Looking for recommendations for a reliable, responsive CPA in the Halifax area based on personal experience. Some online reviews seem questionable (bought!) and a couple firms I've contacted haven't responded.

We need help with two things:

* Receiving a substantial inheritance from abroad and ensuring we have the proper documentation for CRA.

* Tax planning for our rental property, including whether my husband can reasonably compensate me for managing ours.

Ideally, someone knowledgeable in both areas who can help us plan ahead rather than just file our taxes.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Shops & Services Where to get my broken ipad fixed?

Got a 10th generation ipad for free from my bank a few years ago. But last month it bricked itself. I won't turn on at all. I've tried charging it for many hours and with different charger. I've tried the reset button code multiple times. It's time to look elsewhere.

It's not covered under warranty anymore. Should I try going through Apple to get it fixed? I fear they'll tell me to just buy a new one. Does anyone know a good electronics person who could help? Not sure if it's the screen or the battery that's broken.

Thanks in advanced!

Schools & Education HRCE/ province/ someone? fired my son's pre-primary lead, then asked her to sub for the position she was fired from.

My son's pre-preprimary teacher found out last Monday that she was being let go and that her last day was last Friday.

For context, she is lovely and the kids love her (I have four kids and they've all gone through pre-primary with varying degrees of good ECEs).

She, and I think a few others, were apparently let go because of low enrolment numbers across the HRCE and she is contract. She was told someone with a permanent ECE position would be moved into the role. And then last Friday, after tearful goodbyes with the kids, she was called and asked if she could sub for today (Tuesday) because they had no one to cover her now empty position, and was also then asked to sub for the rest of the week. Because they have no one. Despite literally a week ago having someone in the role.

So now she is subbing for an empty position which was her position and now no longer getting the benefits of contracted work.

The lack of forethought and care and planning and just like general competence of the people in charge in this province is honestly staggering. I don't know who ultimately makes the decisions in this situation, where the directive to fire someone comes from (is it all the way from the top? I don't know) but the instability it creates for not only a person who thought they had a guaranteed job for the year, but also the kids who are in this really tough transitional period in their lives is horrible.
