Gus the Tortoise 🐢 Gus' surgery was a success
From the museum -
"An update on Gus the gopher tortoise - October 13th, 2026.
The procedure to remove his bladder stone was a success, and he is resting comfortably with his care team.
Gus will remain with his veterinary care team for close observation for 48 hours, before returning to the museum later this week.
Gus will be recovering behind the scenes for the next 8-10 weeks, but we will continue to share updates on his recovery.
Thank you to his vet team for their excellent care of our beloved Gus and to everyone for your support and well wishes."

I still can't believe so much of Halifax has grown up with Gus their whole life 😂 He really is family!

I wonder how many people in the entire city are older than him. Prob not many!

Gus was 20 when he moved to Halifax and has been here for 84 years. I'd guess there are less than 10k that have been alive as long as he's lived here, MAYBE 100 people over 100.

This is so accurate. I met him as a kid, so did my mom. Her mother met him in adulthood. He has been a Halifax treasure for generations!!!

A lot of Nova Scotia I'd guess. I grew up on the south shore and we all knew Gus from class trips

I can’t imagine how nerve-wracking it must be to perform surgery on a 104 year old … anything … let alone a tortoise.

The news cycle has been rough lately. I needed this. That tortoise has quite a legacy.

I face my own surgery on the 29th for a knee replacement and I'm more worried about a tortoise I have never met! Glad Gus is doing great!

Long live the king. Glad to hear the old guy pulled through smoothly, he has certainly earned 8 to 10 weeks of being completely pampered behind the scenes.

I'm so glad that Gus is doing okay! I've been checking in on this sub just to get Gus updates. I don't even live in Halifax.

CBC covered Gus's 58th hatchday party:

The first time I had met Gus was when my wife and I brought our kids to see Sue the T-rex. Gus had his usual entourage of parents and their kids in his orbit just as expected for the Halifax Celebrity.
