We visited Gus to give our well wishes this weekend! I am going to take the opportunity to plug the museums annual pass for any parents. It’s like $42 for a family for the entire year and sometimes I take my kids (7 and 3) there just to do the plinko game. Really good affordable rainy day option.

From the museum -
"An update on Gus the gopher tortoise - October 13th, 2026. The procedure to remove his bladder stone was a success, and he is resting comfortably with his care team.
Gus will remain with his veterinary care team for close observation for 48 hours, before returning to the museum later this week.
Gus will be recovering behind the scenes for the next 8-10 weeks, but we will continue to share updates on his recovery.
Thank you to his vet team for their excellent care of our beloved Gus and to everyone for your support and well wishes."

My rabbit's vet is the same as Gus'. She is the best.
We keep telling our bunny she has a celebrity VIP vet.

From what I heard yesterday, the surgery was likely going to happen this morning, and they were expecting to give out an update as soon as possible, possibly as early as this afternoon.

does anybody know the nature of the operation?

I csnt remember the specifics but I DO remember them saying he's needed the surgery for a while however it used to be very invasive(like, drill thru his shell invasive) so they were able to wait until the procedure could be advanced and become less invasive.

He’s had a bladder stone for years that has finally reached the point of needing surgery.

A bladder stone was growing, is not painful yet but starting to press into tissues. Thankfully they now have a way to do it pretty noninvasively (through incision on leg) without cutting up his shell.

I remember visiting him as a kid and now as an adult, every time I'm at the museum, I make it a point to go say hello. I even remember attending a reception at the museum a few years ago and going out of my way to go say hello. Hoping Halifax's Little Buddy will be ok❤️

I just turned 60 and one of my favourite memories as a little girl was going with my grandad to visit Gus the tortoise. We’d go every weekend and then would go over to Swenson’s ice cream and have a cone. Gus is a huge part of our cities, history and of my history. I wish him well!
