Question(s) Yellow Footed Brazilian Tortoise pooping habits question

Post image
15 Upvotes

I took over care of an 8 year old Yellow Footed Brazilian Tortoise about six months ago. Until the last few weeks, the weather was mild enough that he spent hours outside every day. This is when he usually pooped and he leaves pretty decent sized piles. He's spending more time in his tent, often going days with no outside time because it's below 65°. I haven't found or smelled any poop in his tent, even after 4-5 days with no outside time.

My question is, do they bury the poop? Is he just holding it and waiting for outside time? Where's the poop?!

Question(s) Paid Transport: Tortoise — [Georgia or Tennessee] → Charlotte, NC

Looking for someone willing to transport a tortoise from GA or TN to me in NC. I’ve found breeders in both states, so really just hoping to find someone who’s open to picking one up and bringing it to North Carolina. Happy to compensate you for your time and travel. Thanks!

If this sounds like something you’d be open to doing, reach out!

This is Bean, affectionately known as Nean.

Bean is my SO’s 1 year old Radiated Tortoise.

She is an absolute Gem, super cheeky, and my best friend!

Thought it’s about time to introduce her to r/tortoise!

Question(s) Western hermann tortoise enclosure question

Hi all, my western hermann tortoise is coming up on a year and a half old. I created an enclosure with a 110 qt sterilite container based on recommendations from Garden State tortoise. Seems like he's getting to the point where he needs something larger. This enclosure has been great for trapping humidity and ensuring proper shell growth, etc. Looking for recommendations on the next enclosure to buy? How big should it be? Any specific item recommendations? Was looking at this one which seems huge for him... It's 6x2: https://a.co/d/0d4GypQ2

Question(s) Red/pink lines on plastron

Post image
10 Upvotes

My tortoise has this very faint thin red/pink line from tail to neck on the underside of their shell.

I've never noticed it before but just spotted it today when giving them a bath.

Is this anything to worry about ? They are not quite due their annual checkup yet.

Question(s) tortoise temperature and enclosure question

to preface this is not my tortoise. It’s someone else’s and I don’t live with it nor do I have any say over what happens to it. a lady I know though got a tortoise from a neighbor or something, little baby sulcata if I’m not mistaken, and barely takes care of it. It was in nothing but a little plastic container with maybe a tiny cup for water. last time I pet sit I got it a larger container, a mat, an actual bowl/bath, and a hide. I’m currently trying to get them to feed it anything but salad mix and just bought it hay.
I want to save up to try and pitch buying it an outdoor enclosure so it has space and isn’t in a horrible cramped little container inside all day. I need to know what temperature it can safely be outside in or if there’s something about whether they can even be outdoors that I need to know if birds aren’t an issue.
more context this thing is maybe like small burger sized at best and I’ve seen it easily get picked up with a couple fingers. I know an actual well set up enclosure would be best but I can’t necessarily make that happen because it’s not my house.
I can’t remove it from this environment but I can do what I can to make it better

Question(s) Climate for a Hermann’s or Greek Tortoise

Post image

Hello! I live in north east Florida (Jacksonville) and I am interested in getting a Hermann’s or Greek tortoise and would like to keep them outside. Is my climate suitable for outdoor keeping year round? I have added a chart that shows our average high and lows each month along with precipitation levels.

Question(s) Homemade Enclosure

Creating a homemade enclosure for my Dwarf Hermann. What material is best for the table itself? Has anyone used plywood? I understand it’s not waterproof, but we plan to use a double-layered pond liner and sealant. I’ve seen some use PVC, is that better? I am looking to create a fairly large space, so think plywood would look nicer, but my tortoise’s happiness tops how the table looks, so I’m not fussed.

Question(s) Help with baby sulcata enclosure

Thumbnail

Hello all. As the title says, I’m in need of some help and guidance. Came home from being out of town to a baby sulcata that the wife adopted the day before so I’ve basically had 1 day with it to get an enclosure set up. Went to a reptile store, told them my predicament, and this is what they gave me. Now that I’m reading more posts from here, I realize I have some issues to fix.

-Most notably making this tank (which I now know glass isn’t the best) closed at the top to keep in the humidity. Right now it just has the mesh screen top. If I were to cut an old shower curtain to fit the openings, would that work and would the heat from the lamp and the UVB light get through? And how do I make the enclosure breathable with that setup?

-Is this substrate ok? Also how deep do I need to make it since I know they like to burrow.

-do I need a nighttime heater? Wife keeps the house around 70 degrees which might be too cold. I don’t think keeping the uvb and heat lamp on 24/7 is the right decision but maybe I’m wrong?

-I bought collard greens at the store and plan to get some cactus and dandelion greens as well for some variety. How often do I mix in the calcium powder? Is that a daily thing or weekly?

-the enclosure itself is 36x18 which will only get me a year before it gets too big and needs an upgrade but after spending a car payment on this tortoise already today I went with this size.

- I’ve also read they need some sort of vision barrier so I taped some strips of cardboard around the outside but I was noticing it was constantly pacing around the edges so do I need to use something else?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I just want to do right by the tortoise and give it a good home but unfortunately I’m figuring things out on the fly.
