Let's talk about rules.

Howdy, folks!

This subreddit hasn't had codified rules in a while, mostly because the people here have usually been really chill with one another.

However, the vibe has changed over the past few months, and we've noticed some nasty behavior popping up and lurking around our community.

We don't allow bigotry like racism, sexism, homophobia, or transphobia on this subreddit. Generally speaking, we expect folks to be civil and decent towards one another.

Recently, we've noticed a distinct uptick in the amount of trolls who have been showing up in the comment sections of the various protest posts. We know they're trolls because they're almost always attacking the OP or trying to diminish the protest, and they usually have user activity across many state and local subreddits.

These aren't local folks - they're people coming into our space from elsewhere to stir up trouble.

Since this sort of behavior has only been getting worse, let's discuss our subreddit rules and which ones y'all think would be good to have for this space.

For a start:

  1. Be civil and respectful towards one another.
  2. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or bigotry.
  3. No spam.
  4. Follow all of reddit's rules.

What other rules do you think we need?

Howdy, y'all. I guess it's time for me to tap the sign again, because every time there are protests in the Triangle, someone goes around and mass reports all of those posts.

Strangely, we also tend to get a lot of people who post in all sorts of local area subreddits, all over the country, just to act like they're upset about this protest or that protest, and yet have never commented in our community before. Fancy that.

So there's some underhanded fuckery afoot, and y'all should be aware of it.

This subreddit is devoted to the protection and well being of our community at large. That means all of y'all. We cannot support the extrajudicial detainment of anyone, citizen or no. This country was built on laws and principles, meant to be a shining beacon of democracy where people would get a fair shake.

One of the cool things about America is you can come here and become American. It's one of our country's major strengths.

As a country, our diversity has repeatedly protected us - patriotic members of German and Japanese communities helped the US translate enemy communications during WWII. The Navajo code talkers weren't declassified until the 1970's because they were so effective - their codes were never broken. There's also the Tuskegee Airmen and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an all-Japanese unit which became the most decorated unit for its size in US history.

Today is also November 20th, a solemn day for trans folks across the US. It is the Trans Day of Remembrance, when we remember those we've lost to murder or suicide over the years. Unfortunately, I recognize more than a few of those names, and I hate the way the list gets longer every year.

Times are tough for our Hispanic and LGBT friends. People are anxious and scared. Bigotry and bullshit have been stoked and set loose upon the country; hatred has been running rampant. People are going to need protection, support, and resources.

This space is meant to be a refuge and a resource for our community. If you can't respect that, or if what I have said here is somehow objectionable to you, please leave.

WASP Auto repair - my recent experience

Service advisor recommended suspension work, due to dry rot on some boots could allow further damage. He then showed me a VIDEO of a dry rotted boot that was opening up when turning, and presumably let grease out and contaminants in. Seemed like a solid recommendation to me.

Based on some other aspects of the visit however, I got a second opinion, and was allowed under my car when it was on the lift. You could see clear as day that everything was fine with boots (and bushings), and no work was required.

About a $1,300 quote.

Legalize cannabis in North Carolina

Thumbnail

Thousands of North Carolinians live with chronic pain that traditional treatments can't fix. We're left with limited options, often harmful ones. It doesn't have to be this way.

I started a petition to legalize cannabis in North Carolina—both medical and recreational use. Right now, 41 states have already made medical cannabis legal. We're being left behind when we have a real solution for people suffering right now. The research is there. The economic opportunity is there too—other states are seeing jobs and tax revenue from regulated cannabis. And honestly? North Carolina's agriculture industry could lead here.

This isn't about getting high. It's about access to treatment that actually works. If you know someone dealing with chronic pain, inflammation, or other conditions that cannabis could help with, this matters. If this resonates with you, consider signing and sharing. What's your take—do you think North Carolina should catch up with the rest of the country on this?

Apartment hunting around the triangle

Hello r/triangle folks! I'm headed down to the triangle for a new job in December and hoping to get some opinions on apartment complexes OR learn if anyone knows how to find a home for rent by owner- please share!

I am planning to check out:

  1. Avalon Perimeter Park

  2. District Station

  3. Elevate Brier Creek

  4. Sinclair Cary

My main concern is roaches.

I have been in the trenches fighting German roaches in my current work place and very concerned about possible infestations in large apartment complexes. PLEASE share if you know of any compromised buildings or otherwise red flags.

I was able to tour NOVEL Morrisville and Broadstone Trailside, but didn't love them. I'm pretty introverted and can't imagine using all the amenities like co-working space or a clubhouse. If there are any other good suggestions in a <30 min commutable distance for a 1 or 2 bedroom under $1800/mo I am grateful for any and all input!

FRBO is the dream:

The last time I moved for work I got really lucky and lived on the second floor of a house for rent by the owner. I really liked this setup and would love to rent from the owner or a small property management company again. If anyone has a reputable source for this besides Zillow, I would be happy to hear from you! I am a single person with no pets (allergies) and very clean (positive letter of reference from my previous landlord).

Thank you in advance! This subreddit seems very friendly and gives me some reassurance about relocating to a nice community!

Southeast Regional Library closure - Wake LWU

Post image
166 Upvotes

On Tuesday, October 6, Southeast Regional Library closed to the public for four (4) weeks, after library workers organized against unsafe working conditions caused by a planned roof replacement project. This is a matter of public concern, as Wake County is responsible for ensuring public safety at their facilities. Wake County administrators failed to plan adequate safety measures during this construction project, and they failed to promptly address reports of these dangerous conditions.

On Monday, September 28, library workers began noticing and reporting noxious fumes in the building and developed acute symptoms including headache, dizziness, brain fog, burning eyes, numb tongue, throat irritation, and a bitter chemical taste. These symptoms correlate with known health effects caused by exposure to roofing adhesives.

Noxious fumes and these symptoms were reported to County administrators on Monday, September 28, Tuesday, September 29 and Wednesday, September 30. Each time, library workers expressed concerns about adverse health effects, and raised questions about potential effects on children, pregnant people, and other vulnerable populations who use libraries. County administrators assured staff that nothing toxic or hazardous was being used. In fact, it was suggested that the people experiencing symptoms may just be sensitive to odors.

Later, one of the compounds onsite was identified as Sarnacol AD Adhesive, which carries warnings of acute toxicity including the following statements: “Harmful if inhaled; May cause respiratory irritation; May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure if inhaled; Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area; Call a poison center if experiencing respiratory symptoms; Once sensitized, a severe allergic reaction may occur when subsequently exposed to very low levels.” The Safety Data Sheet with this information is readily available online. Staff were expected to continue working in the presence of this compound and others between 20-40 hours a week for the entirety of the 6-week project.

Conditions inside the library on Thursday, October 1, became too unsafe to ignore. Library workers made the call to evacuate the building as families began arriving for Toddler Storytime, and the branch closed for the day. Three (3) children’s programs and one (1) adult program were cancelled. After three (3) more days of partial or full closures and cancelled programs, County officials finally deemed conditions severe enough to close the branch for the remainder of the project. The 4-week closure was publicly announced Tuesday, October 6, more than a week after workers began reporting noxious fumes and adverse symptoms. This closure only happened because of the brave actions taken by library staff to protect themselves and their patrons.

Wake County has not communicated the reason for the closure, publicly citing “odors” and “ongoing conditions.” Even coworkers at other library branches do not know about the serious health risks that workers at the Southeast Regional branch faced this past week. The abrupt closure has caused mass confusion among library patrons, who had recently visited the branch and had no idea there was any danger, and increased workload at all other branches as workers manage hundreds of books each day that were ordered by patrons of Southeast Regional Library for pickup. The abrupt closure has also resulted in the cancellation of over 50 planned programs and services, including the Lawyers in Your Library event, a free clinic providing access to legal guidance for this historically underserved area in Southeast Raleigh.

This was completely preventable: a planned construction project should have accounted for obvious risk factors like toxic compounds. A scheduled branch closure would have not only prioritized health and safety but also greatly reduced service disruptions.

Our union, Library Workers United, stands in solidarity with our members and all library workers at the Southeast Regional Library branch who fought to protect the health and safety of our
community and coworkers. Together, we call on Wake County leadership to take accountability for their inaction, to investigate the failures in assessing the risks of this project, and to reinstate the personal sick leave that library workers used to recover from their exposure-related symptoms. Reinstating leave would show a sincere interest in nurturing workers’ wellbeing in line with the County’s Core Values.

We ask our community, supporters, and library patrons to join us in calling for accountability from the following:

**County officials:**

● Library Commission: library.commission@wake.gov

● County Manager, David Ellis: 919-856-6180 // david.ellis@wake.gov

● Community Services Director, Frank Cope: 919-856-5562 // fcope@wake.gov

**Elected officials:**

● Wake County Commissioner District 2, Safiyah Jackson: 919-856-5576 // safiyah.jackson@wake.gov

● Wake County Commissioner Chair, Don Mial, 919-856-5575 // don.mial@wake.gov

● Wake County Board of Commissioners: 919-856-6180 // submit online at https://maps.wake.gov/commissioner-feedback/

● NC House Representative, Monika Johnson-Hostler: 919-733-5880 // Monika.Johnson-Hostler@ncleg.gov

● NC Senator, Dan Blue: (919) 733-5752 // Dan.Blue@ncleg.gov

Library patrons have the right to use their public services without exposure to harmful chemicals. Library workers have the right to be safe at work. Libraries work because we do!

A tiny kitten survived I-540 in Wake County. The deputy who rescued her kept following her story

Post image

I reported this story for The News & Observer after seeing the SPCA/Wake Sheriff post.

Willow was about 4 weeks old when Deputy Devin Richardson spotted her running on I-540. He wasn’t sure he had missed her, pulled over and ran back.

I spoke with Richardson and traced what happened to her afterward through the Wake County Animal Center and SPCA Wake.

Read the story for free: https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/counties/wake-county/article317562508.html?giftCode=cc5945f58227906e7b807bc3abc09240bf7624d3e0618eaef45a87cf130a6889

I built an app to help people with mobility issues in Wake County find safer routes to their destination. Seeking feedback.

I'm a high school student, and I built PathWalk (pathwalk.app), a free web app that finds the safest walking or wheelchair route rather than the fastest. It's for people with mobility issues, primarily those who use wheelchairs, walkers, or canes in Wake County, NC.

What it does

  • Routes around missing sidewalks, risky crossings, steep slopes, steps, missing curb ramps and pedestrian crash hotspots
  • Builds routes for a mobility profile (manual or power wheelchair, walker, or custom limits) and gives each route a safety score
  • Turn-by-turn voice navigation, rest stops along the route, and crowdsourced hazard reports
  • You can even simulate a walk to preview a route

PathWalk currently only covers Wake County, but anyone can try it: enter a start and destination within Wake County (a few suggested places pop up when you tap the From or To box), then press "Simulate walk."

I want to expand PathWalk to other counties, then all of North Carolina, and even the whole country if possible, so please let me know what you think. Brutal honesty is welcome.

(sorry, theres no audio in the video...)

Quick demo of the website. Use on mobile for most access to features.

Divorce Lawyer in Raleigh/Wake County

I have a complex family law case. I have a cheating abusive husband, a 24 year old disabled sick daughter, and I have been financially dependent on my husband for 10 years with no way to work, since I am my daughters full time caretaker. We were married 30+ years. I need an attorney that works with unequal distribution, mediation, and alimony. I need one that will fight for me and my daughter that won't back down so we don't lose our house or alimony. I have been burned by 2 attorneys so far that took what little I had and screwed me over. They didn't provide any service for the money. I've paid over 15k total and gotten no where. I don't have alot of money left due to the fact I can't work and only have the small amount he pays me for the mortgage. I want to stay out of court, as I can't afford it but could end up there. My husbands attorney is Shea Maliszewski. I am in desperate need of any lawyer referrals in the Raleigh or Wake County area. Please let me know if anyone knows of any or has personally had any good experiences with any. My mediation is in a few days. Thanks.

DURHAM: Folks that are hosting free community events in Durham, where do publicize (online or IRL)?

I'm hosting a few free community events in November & December - a free graphic tee swap and a nighttime listening party of Dark Side of the Moon in the park. I'm looking for places to share this to the Durham community specifically, not the whole ass triangle. I really doubt people will drive all the way across town for a few free graphic tees or listen to Pink Floyd lol

Anyway, the bullcity reddit unfortunately deletes community event posts so that's a no-go. I already posted the graphic tee swap to Bull City Shares on Facebook. Any other community oriented online spaces good for this kind of stuff? Are the neighborhood listservs still active or did nextdoor eat all those up? Do yall get good responses putting up physical flyers around town at places like Central Park)? Any bars have good community boards for flyers?

These aren't HUGE events so I don't want to blast to the larger Downtown Durham FB groups that have 25,000 people, but I'd love to get word out to specific niche of folks that would be into small free community events.

I also organize the pie in the park event on 3/14, so it would be great to know what is working for folks doing these kinds of events.

Seeking Local Jazz Band

Hi there!

I work in property Management - we are seeking a local jazz band or artist for live music to be played at our next resident event this November!

We have a smaller property and event budget so any one willing to recommend or connect about pricing and budgeting would be great - the event would be like a social happy hour with Residents mingling and you playing - it would also be a great chance to co-mingle or promote services if you do provide private event or venue gigs.

Any and all suggestions welcomed!
