Question Holy Wow: bill increase
I just got the notification from Apple that my price for DisneyPlus annual is moving from $79.99 to $189.99, a full $110 jump. That's crazy! Was I stuck in some time vortex and underpaying for a year or what in the heck happened?
61
u/nightmyth 4d ago
Well the new price is $214.99 annually in the US so you’re lucky you’ve been paying $79.99 till now
7
u/ArkadyRandom 3d ago
And they’re still only paying $190 compared to $215. I get that a $110 jump is a big shocker though. I would have a wtf moment too.

u/MasterSplinter9977 3d ago
I work there. 79.99 pricing was for 4 years ago. Rare bug when people still have it

Yeah, I’ve been doing the Black Friday deal for the past few years. Hopefully, it’s still a good deal this year. If not, I’ll be cancelling.

u/oliguacamolie 2d ago
This is why I’m ditching streaming and just buying the blu rays. My kid just watches the same 7 movies over and over anyway.

u/brandielynng29 2d ago
I love my blu rays and dvds. I still have my ancient blu ray player and won’t stop using it

u/thefastlanerules 5h ago
I just use my Xbox series x. I also gave a PlayStation which I think plays most discs as well
5
u/West-Piccolo-687 2d ago
It's the way to go, unfortunately Disney is one of the few companies that is the worst for Blu Rays price wise, even used on ebay they go for a hefty premium as people know what they're selling. Screw disney.
3
u/Fit-Memory-5041 1d ago
I got super lucky and picked up like four once at a garage sale for 1.00 a piece. They didn't even look like they'd been watched!

u/stevensokulski 4d ago
Either you were getting a subsidized annual, or your memory is letting you down.
$79.99 hasn’t been the annual price since December 2022.

u/thxman1138 4d ago

u/Tivis014 4d ago
They may have offered a special discount or you got lucky enough to be grandfathered in. I had to cancel my yearly subscription when the Hulu monthly package deal got to be cheaper than what they wanted to charge me for a whole year of just Disney+. Now I’m just done entirely. This is ridiculous in a time where the economy sucks from every angle for all of us.
7
u/BlackLodgeBrother 4d ago
Must be nice. I wonder why yours has never increased? $80 annually was an excellent value for single individuals. I would have gone up to $120 but $190 is just insane for an app that I only use a few times per month.
Especially now that they’ve started pushing ads on the paid tiers as well.
3
u/WerewolfUnlikely5418 US 3d ago
Fuck me. Anyway you slice it that's a huge increase. Large enough I think for many folks who usually just roll with the increases to say I'm done. You could have at least bought me dinner first, Disney
1
u/minnygoph 3d ago
You probably had an old plan that never got updated until now. My monthly bundle plan was like that for a long time too, I was paying $14.99/month for the ad-free bundle until one month it finally jumped to $30/month.
11
u/investedinterest 4d ago
Mine was $79 a few years ago and def went up a lot the last few years. The last 2 years at least they’ve done a huge Black Friday deal tho as a heads up!! If you can wait to reup. Only catch is that you need to use a new email and credit card, and your watch history and lists won’t transfer, but it was immense savings last year and I got a whole year much lower than the full price was supposed to be! Keep an eye out for it.
15
u/yenyob 3d ago
When it first came out, we bought in for 3 years for a TOTAL of like $120. It was like a launch special to get people to sign up. Then we got a free year from Verizon. That all averaged out to $2.50/month. Times have certainly changed!
8
u/Shantotto11 3d ago
“Times have certainly changed” should NOT be a phrase uttered for something that has only existed for 7 years…
11
2
1
u/Mark_Venture 3d ago
I got that too but since Verizon had it included in my wireless plan, that D+ buy is still queued up in my account. So if Disney ever takes it away, I will have 3 years from that point paid for already
-1
u/jrr6415sun 3d ago
So annoying how people bring up the 3 years for $120 everytime there is a price increase. It was an offer to get people to sign up to compete with Netflix. It was never the expected base price
7
u/Organic_Eggplant_323 3d ago
Just as a heads up, check your other subscriptions for streaming benefits.
I get Disney+ free with my $99/yr Kroger Boost membership (which I don’t auto-renew and only sub to when they run their special price of $49/yr. They do this 2-3 times per year). With Ads. I get Netflix free from t-mobile (with ads, single device but I could upgrade that for a small fee), and Peacock free thru Walmart+ (with ads - can opt for Paramount+ if you prefer. Same deal with waiting for the special price to subscribe- although my AmEx had a 50% cash back deal on this one recently). Also AppleTV for $3/mo thru t-mobile as well. We don’t pay individually for any streaming services anymore. Also, lots of credit cards offer discounts on streaming services so check your offers thru them as well.
2
u/BlackLotusPanda 9h ago
This is a really good suggestion for people that use already kroger boost, walmart+ etc (or thinking about it) to save money on a subscription.
4
u/RainDownAndDestroyMe 2d ago
So sick of these streamers. I haven't had Netflix for about a year, guess I'll be deleting Disney+ soon too. Plenty of books to read to fill my time.
28
u/BlackLotusPanda 4d ago
Because they can and they think people will keep on paying regardless. I had netflix since back when they were $5 and after two price hikes I told them if they did it again I was cancelling, and when they jacked the price up again I cancelled. I will do the same with disney/hulu when the time comes because big corps need to know we are serious about our money that keeps them in business. It's like I always say "Stop asking why the clowns are acting like clowns and stop buying tickets to the circus." . There are plenty of free options.
10
u/futuresdawn 3d ago
The people acting like you're cancelling is meaningless are so bizarre. Obviously one person cancelling won't make a difference but we're seeing reports of more people returning to broadcast TV this year, 4k disc sales are up and Netflix is having mass layoffs because growth has plateaued. Streaming isn't dying but it's still facing a crisis because customers are becoming unhappy, the core selling factor was a wealth of content at a low price with maximum convenience and now streaming is turning into on demand cable. The main thing is people are noticing and everyone has a point where they can't justify it anymore. Personally I've cancelled all streaming and will only subscribe if there's a few things I want to binge watch in a month and cancel again
3
3
u/jrr6415sun 3d ago
Because people do keep paying. People say they will cancel but they don’t
1
u/BlackLotusPanda 3d ago
I told netflix to shove it and cancelled, when the time comes when disney asks too much I will cancel them as well.
1
u/thefastlanerules 5h ago
Interestingly I was on their premium tier because of the 4k movies
It's funny I came back (had some great discounts on Netflix gift cards) and decided to try the basic tier and I don't find the ads that intrusive (unlike the Amazon 3 minute ads which really are bad) and even with a really good don't OLED TV I'm struggling to notice much if any of a quality difference.. so them raising the price has meant Im now paying less than $10 a month with discounted gift card options..
I only tolerate the Disney/hulu bundle because I get $120 a year off with my Amex cash preferred card..
6
u/UltimatePixarFan US 4d ago
Unfortunately one person canceling over a price hike means nothing to them. It will take until enough people do so that their revenue actually drops. If (using easy numbers for the sake of argument) they have 100 people paying $10/month, they raise it to $12/month, but they can take up to 16 people (or 16% of their user base on a 20% price hike) using these hypothetical numbers) unsubscribing to still grow profits (not that I agree that it’s right or know it may create long-term harm to the business, but when they optimize for shareholder returns on a quarter basis without thinking of the long-term and factors unaccounted for in raw numbers/metrics, that’s the logic).
There’s signs that enough people are starting to unsubscribe and disengage that the point of a price hike causing revenue to fall might not be in the very distant future anymore. But probably still years away if everything but price stays as is so don’t get your hopes up that it’ll be this time or even next time. Many people can’t live (even if they say they can, many people on social media say what they want people to hear without intending to follow through in real life) without multiple streaming services so it may take until having 3-5 streaming services at a time actually can’t be afforded by enough people.
5
u/BlackLotusPanda 4d ago edited 2d ago
You are absolutely correct one person cancelling means nothing and makes no difference whatsoever. It will take a concerted effort from lots of people cancelling for disney to realize people are not going to put up with the price hikes. Spectrum internet felt the sting and are now offering free prime memberships as a result. I don't have any hopes for disney and I don't care what they think, I will cancel when I decide I'm not paying more then I think I need to. I have one streaming service I pay for (disney) and when the time comes, and it will, I will then have zero paid streaming services and I will be perfectly fine without them.
-2
u/1stltwill 3d ago
And netflix has gone out of business since you cancelled.
Not saying you were wrong, but stop kidding yourself that they GAF about you.
1
u/toejam2030 3d ago
I wont pay for Netflix, cuz I dont like Netflix-theyve never updated there WWE product-when it was on peacock-peacock had everything

You can buy Netflix for $9 bucks which is actually a better deal then when it was $5 bucks way back then.
2
u/BlackLotusPanda 1d ago
I'm not sure what price I was paying for the lowest tier but after they did three price hikes and warned them after two, I'm not interested.
-5
u/MyKayla43 3d ago
With Netflix having over 325 million monthly paid subscribers they didn't even notice that you cancelled.
6
u/Alex_Masterson13 4d ago
The annual price for D+ with no ads is currently $215, so you are still getting a bit of a price break by getting it through Apple. But for that big of a jump, you must have had some promo deal that has now expired.

u/Inevitable-Ice7859 3d ago
In Australia, I pay $179.99 annually. Started at $90 in 2019 and has slowly gone up and up and up. If it wasn’t for the ESPN option, I’d ditch it.

2
u/Cool_Bath_77 2d ago
When does this increase go into effect? I have it as an add on to Hulu but barely watch it. If they hike that bundle, I am removing Disney+.
I thought Disney+ wasn't doing well, subscriber-wise. This price increase will definitely tank their subscriber numbers. I know there are people out there that will keep it no matter the price is.
2
u/SimplySapphires 1d ago
I've always found it more helpful to just let it expire and then grab a promotional subscription instead

Do ads get intrusive or is your plan ad free?
2
1
1
u/SynthChips 3d ago
I think the ads being intrusive depends on the platform you I you're using. With HBO Max there are 2 or 3 ads that are 15 to 30 seconds. They do the occasional pharma ad that's 1 minute or 1:30.
Hulu, in my opinion, is the worst offender as far as ads. The worst on any platform. On most shows they have a 2 minute ad break about 5 times per hour episode.
1
u/EamusAndy 1d ago
Did people not grow up watching cable tv? Or does everyone just ignore how its always been?
Is it convenient to do no ads? Sure. But im 43, and ive been watching commercials for…43 years. Im not paying you extra to avoid them, because ive conditioned myself to not care about commercials
1
u/CharacterSchedule700 9h ago
DVR has existed for 27 years. Disney's ads are incredibly intrusive, it seems to crash my fire stick everytime it pops up. Will be canceling after this season of dancing with the stars.

Back on Nov. 30, 2025 I paid $150 for YouTube Premium. The Google search shows it at $159 currently

It's the only long time promising stream service these days.

I’ve had Disney+ Premium since day 1, and I’ve kept track of the price increases. We paid $140.97 for 3 years back in 2019, then it was $79.99/yr. in 2022, $139.99 in 2023, $159.99 in 2024, $189.99 in 2025, and it’s now going up to $214.99/yr. (standalone, without bundling with Hulu). Be thankful you got stuck in the vortex while it lasted. I remember that $79.99 to $139.99 being painful, and it wasn’t even as steep of a jump.

We just got notice it was jumping to double the monthly price. Had the D+, Hulu, HBO bundle.
We canceled. We’ll just stick with the fire stick. Have Amazon Prime anyway, so if there is something we really want to see it is cheaper to just buy that movie.
It sucks because I used to have Disney movies playing at work (background noise while I was doing repetitive work). But I can just put on YouTube or something.

Had founders Circle and haven't had a rebill through Disney since first signing up back in 2019 because a lot of time was paused due to free coverage through Verizon with a benefit from an older cell plan. Account is coming up for renewal in May of next year.
Current promotional price listed on the account is: Disney+ Premium (Annual) for $10.99 a year.
That will expire at the end of my current period and renew at: $214.99 a year.
No thank you Mickey.

Look into their Black Friday deals. I have d+/hulu with ads from last Black Friday for 4.99/mth. I have HBO Max from a Black Friday deal too for 2.99/mth. I’ll be dropping them once I’m done thanks to their merger. I’m sad about that because I love The Pitt.

I have the Disney / Hulu / HBO max bundle and have been paying $16.99 a month for it plus taxes it came to $22 and change. It’s everywhere. Hulu live with Disney is going to $110/month. So we just switched to DirecTV with live local stations, Hulu, Disney and HBOMax for $75. My peacock last year was $49 and they wanted $129 this year. I tried to cancel and they gave it to me for $39.
1
u/gaston213 1d ago
They're going to keep raising prices until enough people cancel. Especially on the premium plans because they make more money pushing people to the ad supported plans (which now cost as much as premium used to 😭) Disney is the one app I continue to be mistified by because they have drastically scaled back making content for it, but also keep raising the price. It makes no sense.

Didn't Disney charge subscribers an extra one time fee to watch a Mulan as well?
Horrible remake, it was just salt in the wound to have paid extra for it.

Got my Disney thru Hulu ad free. My problem is Disney doesn’t work half the time. At this point the only reason I keep it is for Star Wars and they are phasing out Hulu to just be under them. If you have ad-free Disney+ and Hulu with ads. You’ll see ads on anything from Hulu, even when streaming it on Disney+
1
u/jjwomalbany 1d ago
That was not his point. Obviously if you have ad Hulu you would see ads. He was saying g Disney even on ad free has ads now and that is a flat out lie.
1
u/TattooedStormtrooper 1d ago
I understood his point and offered a possible explanation on why he was seeing ads on Disney+ when he has the premium.
2
u/jjwomalbany 1d ago
I guess I would say it’s common sense if you’re on Hulu either on the Disney app or Hulu and have ads on Hulu you would know. But yeah I have seen dumber things.
-1
u/AlaskanDruid 3d ago
I do use the service. That is how I know there are ads in "ad free" plan in the US.
2
u/jjwomalbany 3d ago
No, Disney+ has not started running regular commercial breaks during movies and shows on its ad-free Premium tier in the U.S. There has, however, been a recent controversy about this.
Here's what's happening as of October 10, 2026:
Disney+ Premium (ad-free): Movies and on-demand shows remain generally free of commercial interruptions.
Promotional trailers: Disney may show trailers or promotions for its own shows and services, including on the ad-free tier.
Pause ads: Disney has introduced advertising formats that can appear when viewers pause content.
Live programming and sports: Commercials can still appear, even with Premium.
The recent rumors started after Disney changed some subscription-agreement wording, prompting fears that traditional ads would be added to ad-free subscriptions. Reports indicate that Disney has not made that change.
Bottom line: If you're paying for Disney+ Premium, you should still be able to watch regular movies and shows without traditional commercial breaks. But ad-free doesn't mean absolutely no promotional content or advertising in live programming.1
u/AlaskanDruid 3d ago
Don’t care about controversy. Just sticking with the facts.
2
u/jjwomalbany 3d ago
I showed facts. And you still don’t believe it. You must be the only person that pays for no ads and gets them during a show or movie. 🤣
1
u/jjwomalbany 3d ago
You are flat out lying there are no ads in it I use it almost daily. Show me your source they have ads after your movie or show starts.
0
u/AlaskanDruid 3d ago
It’s ok that you’re not in the US.
1
u/jjwomalbany 3d ago
I am in the USA. Southwest Georgia to be exact. And you seem to be the only person that pays for no ads and gets them in the middle of shows and movies.

On demand is ad-free.

That applies to most streaming services though paramount and apple caught on and started the slow show releases.. so now I just binge watch once all the episodes of a show I want to watch have pretty much all been released!

I have no idea what I pay for what streaming service anymore. I think I'm getting away with something though.... I get Paramount Plus complete with 4K content and I don't pay a penny for it. Same with Peacock. I'm supposed to get the lowest tier for free as part of my Walmart+ benefits, I think, but there it is streaming in all it's 4K glory. Hulu looks pretty good and has all the American Gothic related shows (including the ones with Stevie Nicks... be still my wild heart) I think that's still a part of the Disney bundle which also includes HBO Max...lower streaming quality be damned... just watch it on a Amazon 4K Max streamer and set the picture settings to always HDR and voila a gorgeous picture awaits. I can't be the only one who has thought of that hack. Same with Netflix... I do pay for the lowest tier which offers only a HD level and ads despite the social embarrassment it brings to my family and household. But the ads are surprisingly few and combined with the fire TV stick hack and 4K glory is obtained for like 8 bucks a month. Disney Plus is probably my favorite in terms of video and audio quality. Actual Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision or HDR is available for a remarkably large amount of content. Even IMAX is offered on all the Marvel universe stuff... but it's kind of a gimmick since I can't access film maker mode with Dolby vision or something like that. DR Strange is a trip to watch... great video and audio that bounces off every nook and crany in my theater room. Same with Ralph Breaks the Internet and of course the infinity war madness it's pretty darned impressive almost 4K physical media level... but not quite. I suspect all my subscriptions are going to tumble down at the same time. Then expensive choices will have to be made

You had special pricing or something, because mine is only going up $2/mo. I have Disney+/Hulu bundle (no ads), and I’ve been paying $19.99/mo since last year. It’s going to be $21.99/mo now.
