I went down a slightly ridiculous musical rabbit hole and thought this might be the right place to share it.
I was listening to Kurt Weillâs Johnny Johnson (1936), and in Act II thereâs a very short piece called âJohnnyâs Dreamâ, during the scene where Johnny dreams of Minny Belle.

As soon as it started, my brain immediately went:
this sounds like Zelda.
I canât even point to one exact track. It just has that very specific Zelda feeling to me, something small, slightly strange, dreamlike and intimate. I could easily imagine it playing while walking into a little village, entering someoneâs house, or during one of those quiet, slightly surreal encounters the series does so well.
To be clear, Iâm absolutely not suggesting that Koji Kondo knew this piece or that thereâs any actual historical connection. I have no evidence for that at all. It may just be a completely subjective association.
But then I started looking around and the coincidences became increasingly amusing.
The Legend of Zelda was named after Zelda Fitzgerald.
And, completely separately, Kurt Weill later wrote the incidental music for the 1946 play A Flag Is Born, which actually has a character named Zelda.
Again, none of this means anything. Itâs just one of those bizarre chains of coincidences that becomes much funnier once youâve already heard a Weill piece and thought, âwhy does this sound like Zelda?â
So now I really want to know:
Does âJohnnyâs Dreamâ give anyone else the same feeling?
And if so, which Zelda track does it remind you of?
I have this strong sense that Iâm subconsciously connecting it to something very specific from the series, but I canât quite place it.
