I beat this at 9 with one of my good friends, and this campaign shook me to my core.
I was used to being the invincible master chief, but watching my squad die one by one made me realize that wasnt the game I was playing.
I remember watching my buddy get surrounded, and trying to save him, but I wasn't fast enough. I made it a bit longer but they hunted me down. The cutscene was his character so it was like he got himself back up, wounded, and kept fighting just a bit more.

I recently played this again but with my son this time, and at "Objective: Survive" he didn't even let out a gasp or a "WHAT" like he had been doing the entire game, he just stared at the screen as if he was accepting his own fate. I just said yup lmao

Mine was actually not the ending, I had tricked myself.
I was playing the first Red Dead Redemption, and I got to the part where he gets a farm and it looks like he's going to have a normal, happy life. It went on JUST long enough that I thought it was, in fact, the most unique ending I had ever seen in a game. One where they don't even tell you it's over, your character just gets to live out his days contentedly. I played for a little bit, and then just kind of sat there in satisfied silence before turning off the game and never looking back.
Years later, I found out I was actually about 20 minutes away from the real, sadder ending, and that I had duped myself in giving a happy ending to what was meant to be a tragic game.
Whoops.

u/TossAwayCaptain 14d ago
Here I’d argue in favor of ignorance actually being bliss.. hell of a way he went.
14
u/EdgarVerona 14d ago
I agree, I was sad for a day or so when I found out the real ending. I now tell myself that the "soft ending" I tricked myself into was the real one. 😆
14
u/VomindokLuft 14d ago
Honestly, I played rdr1 back then more times than I can remember. I definitely played it all the way through a few times, but after the first couple playthroughs I started avoiding that one last mission. I'd get all the way through the story and all through the homesteading missions, and then I knew exactly when to stop when there was only that one uncle mission left in the barn. I'd just avoid it, and go about my life doing bounties and side content and unlocking the outfits and stuff. That was MY ending.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (26)34
u/Blazzah 14d ago
Such a great endgame idea though. Game just moves into a homesteading sim instead of unlocking a challenge mode or whatever.
How the game went determines the world state for the sim, what skills you have, where it is on the map, if anyone helps or trades with you, etc. Could end up a hermit in a swamp cause of bad reputation. Could have a farm close to town and host parties. Maybe super rare occasions where you're asked to come out of retirement to handle a dangerous animal or some criminals, or lead into a full sequel and at the end of that you return and either your place is falling apart or taken care of by neighbors or getting ransacked like when Bilbo got back lol.

The first time I played, I didn't realize the conversation with Reed is the end of the game, so I kept negotiating with him and he took So Mi and Johnny comes out and calls me a sellout and I was like wait, that was the end??? And I reloaded the save to send her to the moon.

Shadow of the Colossus
Journey
Telltale’s The Walking Dead (ep 1)
All of these left a huge mark on me. Nothing tops TLOU part 1 though, talk about a powerful story with a gut punch of an ending

Yes, Journey is amazing. Especially when you finish the game with another player you met along the way.

Definitely the last of us 1 and 2. The final confrontation in the sequel, the brutality and realism of it. That game made me need to avoid violence for a while so badly I stuck with like basic cute innocent games for like a month lol.

I still think about the SOMA ending occasionally to this day.
53
u/Musclestache 14d ago
The ending for SOMA hit me hard. The thought that I found myself pondering over for a long time is similar to the question in The Prestige; if you knew what was going to happen when you stepped into the machine and didn't know which side you would end up on, would you still do it?
→ More replies (1)25
u/Extra_Wave 14d ago
I dont know about the prestige but isnt the whole coin flip analogy in SOMA just bullshit and a way to keep simon on the job, theres no luck of the draw, theres no randomness on it, you will never be the other guy you will always stay on the side of the machine you started in
→ More replies (3)20
u/Musclestache 14d ago
After the fact yes, but that's not what was presented to you. You're told that when you do that, your consciousness will be transported, which technically it was but it didn't happen in the way it was implied. That's why you have the crash out at the end.
→ More replies (3)17
u/sobutto 14d ago
Simon really should have picked up on it already though, since he knew about the one that stayed in Toronto, and the one that was left in the original robot body when he 'transferred' to the heavy dive suit or whatever it was. I guess it's a bit odd that Catherine didn't ever mention any plan for what would happen to the leftover them after the upload, but I guess she was just completely focused on getting the Ark launched and didn't really care what happened next.
→ More replies (3)12
u/Savings_Hunt_1935 14d ago
Well if you think about it from his POV, he probably had a lot more on his mind then the implications of this technology, and even if he had some suspicions/confusion, because he had old Simon's memories, he feels like him getting "teleported" over to the new place is exactly what happened. Like he remembers being in the old place, initiating the sequence, and bam now he's here. It's literally 100% identical to what he would feel/remember if it did work how he thought it did.
47
u/supersaiyanmrskeltal 14d ago
Just Simon and Catherine yelling at each other only for the machine to overload and he is just left in the darkness of the ocean. Just the thought makes me shudder, especially since they were DEEP in the ocean.
→ More replies (10)17
u/Super-Cynical 14d ago
Some people maintain a ludicrous idea of the two Simons meeting up (provided you didn't kill the other Simon) but that's ignoring that you needed Catherine to open the doors and there would be no chance of a return journey across the abyssal plain anyway.
15
u/supersaiyanmrskeltal 14d ago
Yeah, only thing Simon could do perhaps is try and climb up the gun to the surface to at least get out of the darkness like that one human did in the logs

Outer wilds is the most accurate answer imo. That game changed things, I didn’t know a mystery game could be that immersive or compelling. I was yelling with my friends like we’d won a championship when I got the macguffin to the ship at the end (being vague to avoid spoiling folks), then we all sat in stunned silence for the entire finale of the game. Nobody spoke once until half way through the credits except for ‘whoa’ and ‘that’s so cool…’

The opening and final scene of MGS 4 are just so fucking good. Love the opening to Ground Zeroes too. Hearing Heres to you (song during the credits of MGS4) playing from the cassette they gave Chico in his cell while XOF ride to the helicopter with the perfect narration. Then when you hear the cassette they gave to Chico during your mission you hear Paz screams and cries over the song cause she’s being tortured… MGS is so good

Devil ending for Cyberpunk 2077. It was brutal. at some point I started to wonder if I was crazy, and then if you choose to go ahead with being uploaded to a Relic chip, it's just blackness. This one still stings extra for me: back then, I was in an abusive relationship. She belittled me, humiliated me, and constantly mocked me for my love for gaming. What little time I was allowed - yes, allowed - I spent playing that game.
The ending had such a profound impact on me, and all I wanted to do was muze about it. Instead, she shut me down, laughed at me for being an “adult” who’s enthusiastic about a dumb game.
