I beat this at 9 with one of my good friends, and this campaign shook me to my core.
I was used to being the invincible master chief, but watching my squad die one by one made me realize that wasnt the game I was playing.
I remember watching my buddy get surrounded, and trying to save him, but I wasn't fast enough. I made it a bit longer but they hunted me down. The cutscene was his character so it was like he got himself back up, wounded, and kept fighting just a bit more.
Haha, theres a lot of reasons reach is one of my favorite games of all time, and many of them are little things like that.
That same friend spent most of the game trying to unlock armor to look like Cat, and he finally got the look on THE mission where she gets shot in the head, so we thought it was him at first 😄 he was relieved when he realized who it was, but I was devastated.
I recently played this again but with my son this time, and at "Objective: Survive" he didn't even let out a gasp or a "WHAT" like he had been doing the entire game, he just stared at the screen as if he was accepting his own fate. I just said yup lmao
I'm the tiniest bit hopeful for Halo's future now that the reigns were handed to a different studio (most likely Sledgehammer) rather than 343/HS having it, and rumors are that they wanna reboot Halo.
This raises the question: if the next game is a reboot, will it be a reboot of the entire series? The best case scenario IMO is that the entirety of 343/Halo Studios additions be retconned and the reboot picks up where Bungie left us at the end of Halo 3, if not being an entirely new story.
I'll only have faith if they bring in members from the original creators who have said they'd love to work on Halo again. But if the scratch the bullshit storyline after 3 I'll be happy for that at least. Go back to Master Chief being a bad ass and hero of the universe not some "objectively bad guy" bullshit. The whole point is you play ass a bad ass space marine who saves humanity not a emotionally damaged simp
How long would it take before the game gets so large you're waiting 10yrs between games. Games with effective, real hard hitting story lines need to release games every 2-3yrs, otherwise people just move on.
Even if I ever come across a game that ends like this, it just won't hit the same. Reach torn pieces away from me with each squad mate lost. Especially Jorge.
'But you belong to Reach. Your body, your armor — all burned and turned to glass. Everything… except your courage. That, you gave to us. And with it, we can rebuild.'"
i still remember my friends in high school talking about Halo Reach on launch, how pumped i was to play it with my cousin, and that was 16 years ago bro, holy fk, what a game
Reach was my introduction to the franchise. I already knew the ending… I knew the game had lots of death… I didn’t cry at the ending, but damn I was close. The only time I full blown cried was when Jorge sacrificed himself… for nothing
It was my first major FPS campaign I've played. In other games when it was obvious I'm gonna die either way I would just give up, but after everything I went through in this game, I was fighting until I ran out of ammo and eventually died after I tried to backshot one of the elites. It was the first and the last time I felt such determination to survive in a video game :D
I will never forget how my roommate and I accidentally "ruined" (not really, it was still pretty impactful) the ending for ourselves by turning on the Grunt Birthday Party skull from the start when we went through the campaign for the first time. Good, mostly unintrusive fun for most of it, but then getting to the very grim "Objective: Survive" and then seconds later having confetti popping out and the children cheering sound effect playing was quite the contrast to the intended tone, haha.
