u/Cold-Practice3107 2h ago
What if they did like an alternate reality thing where Anakin didn't become a Jedi but instead a famous pod racer.
54
u/GesturalAbstraction 2h ago
In the PS2 exclusive sequel to Racer, you can play as an older Anakin with an upgraded podracer: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VaSy86xuXes/sddefault.jpg

Hijacking to share one of the reasons I think the pod race is a cinematic masterpiece.
For the entire 10 minute race, Anakin does not say a single word and does not smile even once. He looks fucking stressed out the entire time. No clever quipping, no commentary on what's happening, and no smug smiles. He just locks the fuck in and wins, then celebrates after he gets out of the pod.
It's so damn good, and it reminds me of the first chase scene in Terminator 2 (the one with the truck) for the same reason - there's no dialogue, just people realistically concentrating on what they're doing.
Duel of fates at the end of episode 1 as well, literally the only word said the entire time is an understandable "NOOO" from Obi-wan when his master dies and yet you still know exactly what the characters are feeling. It's no coincidence that these scenes have so little dialogue but are so universally acclaimed. IMO realistic people behaviour is one of George's strengths in film making, despite how much everyone likes to make fun of his dialogue.

u/The_White_Spy 1h ago
Just purely emoting. Having to sell the scene without telling you what's going on. Great description.
The pod racing scenes is one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema. I saw it in theaters at five years old and it still gives me chills and stresses me out. One of the best audio experiences with surround.
13
u/arbitrary_student 1h ago edited 18m ago
Do not even get me started on the audio, it's a masterclass! It's so distinctive that you can enjoy the entire scene recreated by one guy mouthing all the sounds himself lol
Also worth noting how well the VFX have held up too, it uses a pretty much flawless combination of CG & practical effects that haven't aged a day - which is super impressive considering the movie came out in 1999. Many parts of TPM didn't age well in the CGI department, but thankfully the pod race isn't one of them.
Edit: while we're here we may as well just give props to everyone involved in the scene: sound, music, VFX, makeup, costume, etc, its all great. Love it when anakin takes his goggles off at the end and he's got a grime tan line around his eyes.
12
u/dexters_trap_house 1h ago
I will die on two hills.
We deserve a full standalone pod racing movie.
TPM would've been better if they found Anakin as a teenaged successful up and comer, maybe he's already doing like the Malastere GP. He's got some notoriety which drew attention to him from the emperor. Force-serendipitously the other 'space ship broke' plot still applies for Qui-gonn and Obi. And Maul is there to "recruit" Anakin, but realizing he'd be training his replacement, goes there to kill him.

u/the_snook 25m ago
We deserve a full standalone pod racing movie.
In the next installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, a brilliant hacker lady (played by a former model) invents repulsorlift technology. Another brilliant hacker lady (played by a different former model), steals the technology and uses it to build a fleet of jet-powered, terrain-hugging cruise missiles!
As the missiles fly across an exotic country on their way to end the World as We Know It, The Crew chase them down using NOS-enhanced classic cars and catch them with grappling hooks.
Now attached to two hovering jet engines each, they steer the missiles through a series of twisting canyons to a safe detonation site. An apocalyptic fireball engulfs the cars, but moments later the entire crew walks out of the explosion dirty, but otherwise completely unharmed.

46
u/Hostile-Panda 2h ago
Yeah it’s the first track
14
u/Madzookeeper 2h ago
It's only the first track of you're doing the podracing time trials. The campaign it very much is not, that's on jakku
3
u/Future-Step-1780 1h ago
You race that track multiple times during the campaign in the flash back sequences and during the between planet one on one pod races.

u/Mysticfenix83005 2h ago
Serious question: do you eventually get used to the screen borders? I’ve thought of doing something like this but it’s always seemed so distracting
6
u/Mean-Rutabaga-1908 2h ago
You can get pieces of transparent plastic that basically blur the borders and make it invisible. Used in a lot of sim racing rigs.

Even just watching the video, with how fast the gaming is moving, my brain is only focusing on the main screen. Probably even more convincing in person
2
u/BuckieJr 2h ago
During a racing game. They start to become unnoticeable especially if the game gives an fov slider. Usually, you’d be able to set up the front screen as the windshield and the side screens spilt around the A pillar so they’re a little hidden.
But it’s wholly dependent on the game and how your able to get things set up as well as your own ability to drown it out.

We need a HOTAT for the pod racing. It's how they were set up in universe and how the old pod racer arcade game was set up.

Just note. Pods are a very very small part of this game.
2
u/TheRedRook 41m ago
I don't know what you mean. Do you mean that the "pod" style racers are a small part of it?
→ More replies (2)3
u/bigsteve72 1h ago
Which hurts my soul. I'm hoping they start to lean more into the pod racing.

Personally I disagree. Pods had their time and place in the lore of Star wars. The new machines are excellent and fit the game perfectly.

Why does it feel like all these posts are just a sales team trying to push this game?
18
u/Realsan 1h ago
I'm confused why there are so many people thinking this is some viral marketing stunt. The game is very good and is currently the top selling game on Steam. People can't show themselves having fun with a game without it being Disney's marketing team?

People in the r/hotas community get pretty excited when we have a new game to play with. Whilst this doesn't have native HOTAS or HOSAS support there a lot of external tools to get around this. And this game works really well once set up. It feels super immersive. Linked is my setup and the 2nd image is the flight pedals I just finished building (won't be using them for this though)

Pod Racer was cool enough when it came out but seeing it 3 screens wide really makes it immersive

u/Burgoonius 2h ago
I am so jealous of your set up. Do you use it for other racing games or flight sims?
2
u/bigsteve72 1h ago
Yup! The side monitors are on arms, and the center on its stand. So everything is highly adjustable. Takes only 3 minutes to go from either racing, to flying, back to MKB. Then I can slap a Thrustmaster T16000M flight stick to the desk, or moza r5 bundle for racing.

is this like a retro game where the camera follows a certain path and you control just the lane position?
Or is this actually a game where you need to play yourself?
Also do you crash when you hit walls slightly?
(English isn't my main language,I think I butchered my questions)
Like I want to use skill to play a game and not viewing.
•
u/ddmac__ Jedi 13m ago
It is a full control racing game!
And crashing depends on how fast you're going, and how good your reflexes are. There are ways to mitigate, certain vehicles can bank hard or break hard. Otherwise you're a glup shitto colored smear on the wall. You have to choose on the fly if drifting, decelerating, or breaking is the best way to maneuver, and it changes as you progress through a run.
It's a blast
