Starting my cleaning company

Hey all! I just moved to Austin and recently started a cleaning company, so I'm still figuring out how things work here. If you clean houses or offices yourself (or know someone who does), what's it been like? How's the pay, which places are good or bad to work for, and anything you wish people knew about the job?

Thanks in advance!

Bruce needs a home!

Hi, Austin!

Bruce (6102) is unfortunately coming up on his two year mark at the shelter on 10/22. He needs a foster or adopter to prevent this from happening. Let me make one thing clear: Bruce is still in the shelter due to systemic animal welfare failures at the city leadership level, not due to any of his own faults. He has had the benefit of having 2 short-term fosters, and this is what they said about him:

- Bruce is potty-trained

- Bruce is very affectionate and loves spending time with his humans

- Bruce is crate-trained

- Bruce was able to be left alone for 8+ hours every day without issue

- Bruce has the potential to live with a well-matched dog*

- Bruce is playful

- Bruce also has a MASSIVE fan club of shelter friends who would do anything they possibly could to assist Bruce's new family & set everyone up for success

Please don't let Bruce spend another day in the shelter! Adopt or foster him before the 22nd!

*the shelter requires meet-and-greets for dogs who are going home with other dogs

Ask Austin [Advice needed] Dealing with 5 months of late-night noise issues at an Austin apartment complex, management is unresponsive

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice on how to deal with an ongoing noise issue at my apartment complex, The Prescott on South Congress Avenue.

For approximately five months, my wife and I have been dealing with loud yelling, shouting, and other disturbances coming from a neighboring apartment late at night, often around midnight or later. The noise regularly wakes us up and makes it difficult to get a proper night's sleep in our own bedroom.

Our bedroom shares a wall with the neighboring unit, so the noise is especially loud inside our bedroom. However, someone walking past the neighbor's front door or listening from outside the apartment may not hear much of anything. This has made the situation particularly frustrating because management keeps telling us to contact the security company they use.

We've contacted management multiple times and have made numerous video recordings documenting the noise. We have plenty of evidence, but management continues to ask us for more documentation instead of taking meaningful action. We've also contacted security, but they simply walk past the neighboring apartment.

At this point, we feel like we're going in circles. We've been dealing with this for months, and it has seriously affected our ability to sleep and enjoy our own home.

The apartment's resident handbook specifically states that unreasonable noise is prohibited between 10:30 PM and 7:00 AM. Despite this policy, the situation remains unresolved.

I'm hoping people familiar with Austin can help me figure out what options we have:

- Is there a city department or local authority we can contact to report repeated late-night noise disturbances?

- Would contacting the Austin Police Department's non-emergency line be appropriate when the noise is happening?

- Is there a formal complaint process or any tenant resource in Austin that can help when apartment management repeatedly fails to address documented noise complaints?

- Has anyone dealt with a similar situation, and if so, what actually worked?

I'm not expecting management to eliminate every normal apartment noise. This is about repeated late-night yelling and shouting that wakes us up and prevents us from sleeping in our own bedroom.

We have tried working with management, contacted security, and documented the incidents. After approximately five months, we're looking for a practical way to get this resolved.

I'd really appreciate any advice, especially from people who have dealt with similar issues in Austin. Thank you.

Hi everyone!

I am looking to replace windows at my home. I originally had a contract I was ready to sign with JP Exteriors, but then saw this video of their owner: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Dec3NWixFJo/?vrfl=N3cxNnhpMzZjaGM0

His name is Christopher Reid Rupp and I cannot support this racist scumbag. Any recommendations from you all for windows?

Anyone deal with Sun Gun solar panel cleaners?

Post image
0 Upvotes

They mailed me a letter offering free solar panel cleaning. When I called, they said the idea was that I'd notice a difference and eventually want to use them for routine services.

I was suspicious they are like a roofer \ho does free inspections and of course find something wrong and try to upsell, and sure enough, after cleaning, they told me lots of birds were flying out from under the panels, there was squirrel/raccoon poop, and I probably had chewed wiring. They recommended installing animal barriers and inspecting the wiring and coming back out for a free inspection. The person who comes out is just a cleaner.

Here's what makes me question it: I work from home and play fetch with my dog Nala at least 5 times a day for a smoke break (I'll quit!). The game is o throw the ball high up with a lacrosse stick and hits the panels and bounces down. I've done this for TWO YEARS and never ONCE seen a bird or squirrel fly out haha from underneath them. 😂

I'm not accusing them of anything, but highly suspicious of the validity, but now I'm wondering if this is a standard thing they do or if they are genuinely being truthful. That and I sure hope they didn't intentionally damage any wires.

Has anyone else had Sun Gun clean their panels? Did they give you the same spiel?

Any tips on some good pumpkin patches in South Austin worth checking out this weekend? We've done Pioneer Farms and while that's fun, we're looking for something less expensive and also in the afternoon for this coming Saturday with a 5 and 6 year old.

Lite + Brite's Guide to ATX Halloween · FestWiz

Every year my partner + I compile a list of Halloween events in Austin into a big spreadsheet (here's last year). We have found + described over 300 events this month. If you’re looking to get spooky there’s so much to do. You can watch horror films w/live soundtracks, surrounded by goats, or in a cavern (ok that one is sold out sadly). There are tons of séances, pumpkin carvings, dog costume contests, + bar takeovers. Everything is seemingly haunted including a wellness retreat. Burlesque, drag, comedy, + dance parties are everywhere you look. It’s an embarrassment of riches for those of us who love Halloween.

This year I built a web app version of the spreadsheet so you can filter it by the type of event, age range, that kind of thing. The link in this post is to the web app, both versions are the same list of events just displayed differently. Here's a direct link to the Google Sheet version.

Traffic 35th street exit on mopac southbound

Post image
0 Upvotes

I am so sick of people taking this exit as a “shortcut” (the redline) to merge back into Mopac down the road. I take the 35th street exit regularly and during heavy traffic times this exit/merge lane backs up from all these idiots trying to take the shortcut.

Also the blue line is a merge lane, and there is a yield sign at the end. I literally have not seen anyone actually yield/stop at that yield sign. This always adds stress when I’m trying to merge over to my exit and there are people coming out of that turn doing 40mph+ without stopping.

Edit: comment section literally proving how many selfish idiots are on the road and should not hold a license.

Kealing (Magnet) Middle School - In person essay question

I have a kiddo very interested the magnet program at Kealing. All of his teachers think it would be a great academic fit. My only worry is the in-person essay. He is dysgraphic and it is SO hard for him to get his thoughts on paper. Add in stress and he just goes blank. He is already worrying he won't be able to do it.

Can anyone give me examples of past essay questions? Like to they have to analyze a story? Or talk about themselves? Is it a short story/creative writing? I was hoping to help him come up with a plan of attack and help him start organizing his thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Edit to add: He has a 504 (has dyslexia too!) and we'll definitely use his accommodations. But for essays I believe that would mean extra time, which is great but doesn't always mean the thoughts get down on paper. Dysgraphia is so weird. Thanks!

Ask Austin Best Karaoke spots? Possibly lone troubador friendly?

In town for the week on work, and the stress is real and would be greatly alleviated by belting out some Tool or croonin' some Billy Joel. Any recommendations? I mention the solo aspect because I'm not too proud, but karaoke booth spots are just a sad bridge too far.

Serious bonus points for an unorthodox book.

Edit Thanks for the recommends! See y'all out there on the mic.

183 toll road this morning

Was anyone traveling southbound on the 183 toll near 45 this morning between 5:40-5:50ish?

A commercial truck carrying large rocks was losing debris all over and cars were swerving to avoid being struck. My husband’s truck got pretty jacked up so I’m hoping someone witnessed it or has dashcam. We know the trucking company but the phone number goes unanswered.

What would our next steps be? He’s filing an incident report but is there really any recourse?
