Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread
So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).
A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.
As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.
With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...
So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

General Discussion I don’t care who shot first, I wanna know how the hell Greedo missed.
Dude had his blaster aimed directly at Han from the moment they started talking, has apparently been a renowned enough Bounty Hunter to be working for Jabba since at least the Clone Wars, but still absolutely kriffs it when he shoots and misses Han so badly he doesn’t even have to move his head.

Games The surreal, liminal feeling of old Star Wars games is unlike anything else
It's really hard for me to put into words, but there's just something about these digital landscapes. The simple shapes, the blurry, smeared textures... There's this liminal, strange, eerie feeling to them, like a civilization that disappeared long ago.
Honestly, there's no other universe, not even in video games, that makes me feel this way. I always find myself wanting to revisit these games a few times a year, just to immerse myself in them again. Star Wars Racer, Galaxies, and especially KOTOR, which is easily one of my favorite games of all time.

Games I accidentally hit a stormtrooper with my bike so they sent every scout trooper in the galaxy to take me down
unfortunately the stormtrooper hit happened a few minutes before this so I wasn’t able to screen record it, but I had the misfortune of this whole shebang taking place right next to an imperial garrison, but fortunately in Outlaws you can fight an entire goddam war on a garrison’s front door and they won’t do anything unless your in eyeshot.

Movies I really loved finn and rey's dynamic in The force awakens. The actors really nailed their interactions and the buildup to their relationship was done really well
Its sad how with finn being so sidelined their dynamic was also quite sidelined during the later movies

...is where? Is it in any media that you've seen? She must have made some kind of public statement.

Fan Creations R2 is ready for my wedding
Getting hitched in a month and bought a Home Depot animatronic R2 to be at the reception. Repainted him and modified him to the point he doesn't look like the original animatronic I bought. He looks good in a red bowtie though.

General Discussion It's good to know that goats are still menaces, even in a galaxy far, far away. Also, thanks to Lucas, that's a fully functional hang glider and the ewok actor is actually piloting it in the film 'Caravan of Courage'
It's hilarious later in the scene where the trees keep magically switching between California Oaks and pine trees from shot to shot. Such a fun but campy film for Star Wars.

TV Chances we see Qi’ra in Maul Shadow Lord?
I know the story is taking place before Dryden Vos’s death at the hands of her, but she basically steps in to take his play after removing him from the board.

TV Skeleton Crew is the closest Star Wars has felt to the original in years, and it deserves a Season 2 Spoiler
Spoilers for Season 1 below.
A Jack Sparrow Jedi, four lost kids, and an adventure that brings back the wonder of the original Star Wars. That’s Skeleton Crew, and I still don’t think it got the conversation it deserves.
To be clear, nothing touches the original, and I’m not saying Skeleton Crew is that good. I’m saying it feels like it. The first Star Wars was a young man staring at a horizon, sure there had to be something beyond the life he knew. There was an Empire, a Rebellion and a battle station, but we discovered all of it through an adventure: a message, a journey, a rescue. Skeleton Crew brings that feeling back. Four kids leave a world they think they understand, and all they want is to get home. Every discovery makes that harder and the galaxy more interesting.
War belongs in Star Wars. So do exploration, mischief and mystery. The creatures have personality, SM-33 has attitude, and every place feels like people lived there long before our crew showed up.
The heart of it is the kids. Neel’s compassion matters, and when KB’s implants fail, Wim has to listen to her to fix them. Empathy, courage, and ordinary people discovering they can help someone else: those are Star Wars values.
Then there’s the Jack Sparrow Jedi himself, Jod Na Nawood. To the kids he looks like a Jedi. He acts like Jack Sparrow. He’s neither, and that gap is the whole point. Jude Law makes him charming, slippery and impossible to stop watching. His training was brief, his guidance was taken away, and he learned to survive on deception. Never confuse power with wisdom. Half the time, the kids are more Jedi than he is.
Here are the complaints I see most, and why I don’t buy them:
“It’s a kids’ show.” George Lucas called the original Star Wars “a film for 12-year-olds,” and it never talked down to anyone. Neither does this. It gets darker than people expect: betrayal, threats, a lightsaber pointed at the people the kids love.
“The kids are annoying, especially Wim.” Luke whined about power converters at Tosche Station, and he turned out fine. Wim thinks he’s living a Jedi story. Learning what a hero actually is takes him the whole season, and that’s the point.
“It’s just The Goonies in space.” Star Wars itself was stitched together from Flash Gordon serials, Kurosawa and old westerns, then turned into something new. Same here: the bikes are Amblin, but a lost planet still running as if the Old Republic never fell, with a Force-sensitive con man as the kids’ guide, is pure Star Wars.
“Jod isn’t a real Jedi.” Exactly. Jude Law said they “liked the idea that he had no lightsaber training.” A perfect Jedi would have killed the story.
“None of it matters to the saga.” It’s set in the same era as The Mandalorian and digs up a lost piece of the Old Republic. The stakes are personal: four kids trying to get home. A good standalone story with no Skywalkers is what fans kept asking for.
“Nobody watched it.” It had the lowest Nielsen debut of any Star Wars show, true. But “nobody” was 6.3 million US viewers in its first 35 days. Critics gave it 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences 79%. It won 4 Children’s & Family Emmys too, and before anyone laughs at the “children’s” part: the kids who saw Star Wars in 1977 are the reason we’re all still here.
So, should it get a Season 2? Absolutely. Let these kids grow. Their world has opened up, so explore what that means for them, their families and At Attin. Give Jod a future that has to reckon with his past, and if he’s ever redeemed, make his choices carry consequences.
No Season 2 has been announced yet. Jon Watts said “if people want to see more Skeleton Crew, we’d be happy to make more,” and Christopher Ford said “never say never.” Showing them we want more is the part that’s up to us: watch it, finish it, recommend it.
A strange planet, an unreliable guide, a friend in trouble, one decision that takes courage. That’s all a Star Wars adventure needs to begin, and we need more of this.
Did you give it a chance? Does it deserve a Season 2?
May the Force be with us all.

Movies How not worried were we about the political landscape in 1999? No one ever questioned how a non-planetary group like The Trade Federation had representation in the Galactic Senate, and could sway decisions on the spot.
George tried to warn us…but all anyone wanted was him to get to Vader ASAP so they could see that line of Kenobi’s from ANH brought to life.

General Discussion What is the most dragonlike being in the franchise?
I love all the fantastic animalia from Star Wars but I was wondering, which one is the most "dragonic" from all of them? For now I think that must be Varactyl because is just a gigant lizard.
I love it but wish we have something more draconic, maybe a gigant winged serpent or so. Is there something like that?

Games Just curious, am I the only one who wants a Star Wars RTS Game in the style of Age of Empires or C&C Generals?
I was wondering why there hasn't been any develeper/publisher that has jumped on this opportunity. I get that money is a major issue here in terms of player numbers in regards of RTS games but imagine such a Star Wars game with the option of selecting the different Eras like Old republic etc. and the option to also do spacebattles.
Btw I know theres the old Star Wars Empire at War game but i mean a completeley new one. And I was just curios if anybody else would be interested in such a game?
