Context: back in June, I (22M) gave my coworker (F in her 40s, actual age unknown) a loan because she was dealing with her sick father, so I loaned her $20 because I have known her for a couple years and figured she was trustworthy, so I let her keep it while she got things figured out, she ended up having to take a couple months off work to take care of him in another city, and she would give me occasional updates about him, she did try to ask for another loan back in July, before even paying me the one that she owes me, claiming it was an emergency, but I refused, (not in a disrespectful way, I wanted her to pay me back first, and she understood that,) and while I understand she was going through something, if she really needed money she would’ve come back to work sooner.
Fast forward to this past week, we set a time for me to come get it (I gave her a loan in cash, because she at the time did not have Zelle (or so I thought)) which leads to tonight. She also has a history of asking people at work for money, not just other employees, customers too. We are cashiers at a certain green discount store, but we almost never work at the same time, because she works in the morning, and I’m usually in the evening.
A couple other people I work with say that she drinks, and while I want to assume that was the reason she said this to me, it still doesn’t sit right with me, and even if that is the case, I still don’t want to talk to her. We were cool for around 2.5 years, before tonight. I do feel like it’s partially my fault too for loaning her the money in the first place, if I hadn’t done that, none of this would’ve happened. And while I’m sorry about what she had to deal with, it still doesn’t give her excuse to treat me this way. I supported her and gave her kindness while she was dealing with everything, and then out of nowhere, this happens. I let my manager know what happened, as she has borrowed money from her too, and she took my side, as did some of my other coworkers.
Anyways, it’s whatever, at this point I don’t even care if she sends it or not, it’s only $20.
Edit: reading the comments and… yeah. Thanks to the people who wrote supportive comments, I have blocked and I don’t plan on speaking to her again, after knowing what kind of person she really is. As for some of the people questioning why I gave it to her in the first place and say I shouldn’t expect it back, some of you are right, I should probably not expect that money back, I don’t know why I’m stressing over $20, I’ve made it back several times over since then, so I’ll probably just drop it
