Question Is there a pen light that can do 5000+ lumens, even for just a few seconds?

I'm in Canada, and live in the country, I'm looking to upgrade my five d cell non led flashlight that I use to check out the house when my wife says she heard something.

I'd like a compact single hand flashlight that has an intense flash bang like initial on cycle. Is this a thing? Or do I just get the 10k lumen huge flashlight from Costco?

Headlamps for climbing

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello light people, I'm looking for some opinions on headlamps. I do a lot of outdoor climbing and really dont mind climbing at night but I have a cheapo walmart headlamp I pulled from my parents garage some time ago and it's a bit of a POS. Looking to upgrade, but not sure what to upgrade to. I have heard good things about the zebralight 18650, but kinda just looking for suggestions. Definitely bonus points if its budget friendly and/or I can probably find a secondhand one in gold condition. Thanks in advance. Photo for the algo

Question Is the Fenix PD36R ACE design inherently contradictory for a "tactical" light? (ACE vs. Pro)

Hey everyone,

I recently bought the Fenix PD36R ACE for my car/self-defense setup and I'm a bit torn on the UI concept.

Fenix markets this as a tactical/duty light, but coming from a tactical grip preference overhand, the lack of a dual tail switch feels like a major drawback.

If I don't pre-program the SET ring to pure Turbo, I literally have to shift my grip to the side switch just to change modes or activate strobe under stress.

To me, this feels somewhat contradictory to its intended purpose as a security/tactical tool. The PD36R Pro has the dual tail switch which seems much more tactical from a "form follows function" standpoint, even though the ACE definitely wins on the mechanical USB cover instead of the annoying rubber flap.

If you could get both for the exact same price, would anyone actually prefer the ACE's UI for tactical/duty use over the Pro? Is there something about the ACE's philosophy that I'm missing?

What do you think?

P.s. all this tactical, self defense scenarios are unrealistic for me anyway, I'm just wondering.

Question Seeking someone to put high CRI LEDs on this light.

Post image

Hi, I have several of these units on my Optivisors that I use for art conservation every day. It’s extremely helpful as is, but I’d like it to have high CRI daylight balanced LEDs instead so I can use it for color matching. Can someone here do this for me? Paid work, of course! Bonus points for a better wire and battery pack situation.

Question Advice needed for first flashlight: Keep the Fenix PD36R ACE as a "do it all" light, or switch to a two-light setup

Hey everyone, I'm new to the flashlight world (coming over from the EDC knife community) and could really use some advice.

I'm moving to the Spanish countryside, have a large property, but I'm also frequently in the city and travel a lot in van. I wanted one flashlight that can do it all for EDC, so I just ordered the Fenix PD36R ACE.

However, right after hitting the order button, buyer's remorse hit me. I realized it's probably too big to comfortably carry in my pants pocket every day. Plus, it lacks features you'd want for camping or hanging out in the van (like being able to tailstand).

My question is: Would you guys stick with the PD36R ACE because it's just that good of an allrounder? Or would you recommend switching to a two-light setup? I usually have one tool on my to do it all, that's why I'm hesitant.

I was thinking about getting something smaller for daily pocket carry (like a Fenix PD26R ace) and pairing it with a Wurkkos TS27 to keep in the van for camping, the house, and walking the property at night.

I'm thankful for any recommendations since I don't know much about the market yet. I did look at Acebeam and Olight, but Fenix really appealed to me. I'm a big fan of tactical equipment and design - it's just my personal aesthetic preference.

Thanks in advance!

Loopgear SK05 II

I researched this flashlight before pulling the trigger. Paid 160$ for the UV version in black. One of the selling point was a power bank feature which can reverse charge connected devices with the flashlight. I planned to use to charge my Garmin watch when I'm out in the nature. Well, the flashlight came and I enjoyed using it but when I plugged in my phone to charge, it didn't. I contacted the seller and he told me that apparently they removed this powebank feature from the Chinese market version. The ad didn't mention that and when I try to search I can't find anything. Can this be true ? I opened the box which was sealed and everything looked new. Is the seller lying or is there more to it ? What would you do ?

Review 2 in 1. On. Off. Yesssss! (UltraFire LG20X PRO green thrower)

When it comes to the green light thing, maybe I don't get it... I'm not that big of a fan of it but that's not what I'm reviewing today. I'm reviewing the actual light and I'll tell you what: even though it comes out green, this thing is bright. It's definitely way too bright to look at in the beam for sure and I mean that pretty literally. It's made extremely well. It's very solid feeling. I love that it just has an on and an off function. Nothinelse. I am so tired of all the multiple modes that nobody uses that come on the majority of flashlights these days. I have probably 35 flashlights. Prior to them I was a Streamlight fanboy. I'm just quickly becoming disillusioned with Streamlight and UltraFire is right there to pick up the pieces for me. I probably have 5or 6 UltraFires now. I even got a green one lol, first time for everything...

Discussion Anyone else had a problem with Nebo clips?

I bought their Transcend 3000 headlamp and have been using it for hiking during summer trips. I haven't used it for more than 2 months and was gentle with it throughout its use. Much to my surprise, the clip that holds the lamp isn't what I expected from something so pricey. I was enjoying the view on a mountain. I didn't notice one of the clips that held the lamp had broken off at some point during the hike... The headband/clip was something I never imagined being a failure point. I bent over to look at a spider, and I guess I stood up straight too fast and hit a tree branch and then poof. The lamp disengaged from the headband due to a missing clip and enjoyed an express trip to the bottom of the mountain... I didn't have a backup, so I had to use my phone until morning light. I've been using Nebo for YEARS, and I think this might be a sign that I should try something else. Any replacement suggestions, or is there a brand that I can't go wrong with?

Hi guys, stumbled upon an early access Arktac on eBay for 80 bucks and had to see if it was real or not. Turns out it was! Are the people that got these from olight under an NDA or something? Its a neat light. Doesn't have the laser or the UV option but I may carry it until the official release. Sorry about the crappy beans. Its very well lit where I live.

Loop Gear SK-06 Bidirectional Charging Confusion

Hello r/flashlight !

Having seen some recent glowing reviews and already having a good experience with the SK-03 I just picked up an SK-06 which is already proving itself useful, but I'm really struggling with the charging.

In short, when using the provided USB-C to C cable, it always seems to default to discharging, regardless of if I have it plugged into power bank, wall socket or computer. This makes bringing a power bank along to charge it completely pointless as it always ends up just draining itself back into the bank - before we even consider the concern that it's dumping power into things that are not designed to receive it.

On the other hand if using the SK-03's USB-A to C cable, it seems to default to charging regardless of what it's plugged into.

Since Loop didn't provide any means to tell the flashlight which mode to enter when plugged in, I was hoping perhaps other SK-06 owners, or owners of any other bidirectionally charging flashlights may be able to clarify why this happens or if there's a way to change it since it feels not only redundant having to carry round an A to C cable just for the SK-06, but also somewhat dangerous given that plugging the C to C cable into the wrong device could end up frying a port.

Lumitop Tiger Retro LED swap

I made a post last week with some first impressions of the Lumintop Tiger Vintage. In short, most of the quirks of the light (and there are several big ones) make sense when compared to true vintage lights, and it looks sweet.

The big issue is Lumintop's staggering choice of a 5300K, 60 CRI LED in a vintage-styled light. I couldn't let that stand. Once I pulled the MCPCB out of the light, I decided I was stuck with a 5050 footprint. The MCPCB is very thick and has a unique shape, along with both wire pads being on one side, so a generic won't fit without a lot of extra work. I ended up going with an SFT-40 at 3000K and 95 CRI.

Here's the process:
https://imgur.com/a/lumintop-tiger-vintage-mod-xKU5mzh

The final results are 3100K, 96 CRI, and 0.0026 Duv. Still not perfect, but one hell of an improvement and a pretty close color match for my antique lights.

All in all, this wasn't the hardest mod I've done, but it was pretty fiddly working in the narrow-but-deep head and soldering wires to such a beefy MCPCB. I'd say pretty similar to working in a Convoy M1. The biggest issue is just that 3v in a 5050 footprint doesn't leave you with very many LED options, and a 3535 conversion would need to to do some shimming and shaping on an MCPCB.

Hey guys, i got this flashlight on a flee market and want to know two things:

  1. Does anyone know anything more about this flashlight? It runs on 2 D-cells, has 'Philips HALOGEN' on the tailcap and 'Philips W-GERMANY' imprinted into the side

  2. I'd like to run it on something other than D-cells, what cell would be best to substitute the alkalines?

I have a bunch of flashlight and not a single high quality headlamp so I decided to pick one up today. I love having a warm led for up close and white when I need more light, and it uses the same battery as my PD35R so now I have a spare for either. It says it'll stay in medium (400 lumens) for 12hrs on the white and warm white channel which is so good for what I'll be using it for. Just from messing around with it for 20mins I'm already asking myself why I've been using handheld flashlights for everything when a headlamp frees up one hand. Really exited to use it some more. Here are some really shitty beamshots, the white light doesn't look nearly that green in person but I can't get it to look right on camera indoors. I'm curious do you guys use headlamps much? Or just handheld flashlights?

Recommendation Help with EDC

I work as an on call engineer for a power utility. I do have my vehicle equipped with the usual go light for riding lines + stream light spot.

At times, I do need something more EDC. I don't really want to go down the line of Hank lights or complicated UIs because I just need a light that works, whether being called out in the night or having to troubleshoot something in a substation or POP site.

I have the oclip2 ultra right now and it's just kinda blocky / not really good for EDC.

Any suggestions on a flat light that I can carry with magnetic base and usb-c charging? I have tried the TS 10 as well but hated the complicated UI.

I don't need UV or laser pointer. Just a good in between for when I don't grab my stream light spot light or can't use my vehicles go light.

Recommendation Flashlight for helicopter pilot

Hello! I’m a SAR helicopter pilot looking to stop getting crappy lights that stop working after a year or so of use. I read some posts by airline guys asking for recommendations and seems like the P40 and Arfeld Pro are regularly offered. Unlike an airline guy I don’t need to shoot a beam at stuff 40 feet away, I would mostly be using it to see directly inside cowlings maybe a foot away at most, a flood for night time walk around would be good too. Wouldn’t be using it in the cockpit at all, I fly under goggles so I have a great lanyard pelican green light that I love for that.

I’ve heard some of these can come with UV for spotting fluid leaks and that would be great too. Preferably USB-C, don’t want any proprietary ports, and something pretty small (cigar sized at most) would be ideal. Thanks for the help!
