Technical Help/Camera Settings How can I get my F/A-18 photos sharper? Nikon D7500

Post image
26 Upvotes

I’m fairly new to aircraft photography and took this F/A-18 photo with my Nikon D7500. I’ve already used Lightroom’s AI Denoise, but the aircraft still looks soft and some of the details look smeared.
I’d appreciate advice on whether this is caused by missed focus, motion blur, my lens, high ISO, or overdoing noise reduction. I’d also like to know what I can realistically improve in Lightroom.
What settings or editing techniques would you recommend for getting sharper fighter jet photos at airshows?

Discussion/General Just started — any tips?

I recently got a Canon DSLR EOS 600D camera, and I have 3 lenses efs 50 mm, efs 18-55 mm, and efs 55-250 mm. I took a photography class in highschool but I never really understood f-stop, aperture, and all that. The main things I take photos of are my cats and flowers. These are some examples, though I'm sure they aren't the best, but they are my favourites.

Discussion/General Is 2-4 months a usual turnaround time for wedding photos?

I’m a bit nervous in signing this contract, as she said she gives a photo sneak peak and then it takes 2-4 months to receive the photos in full. Is this normal? Wedding is in July.

Business/Pricing Portrait photographers, how long did it take you to go from starting to making full-time income?

I've been pushing my socials hard. Expanding my portfolio. Running a few ads (don't have money for a big push). Optimized SEO and Google Business Profile. Hired a coach. Started doing daily cold business outreach for headshots. I'm about a year in from starting and full-time income still feels a long way off. How long did it take you to get there?

Gear/Accessories What new computer would you all recommend for editing?

I’ve gotten into photography and purchased a used Canon EOS R50 about a month ago. I love it!! What I don’t love it my 2018 MacBook Air 🥲 it’s absolutely impossible to edit in Lightroom once I start adding masks. It overheats and slows down to like 2fps. I also cannot currently use the denoise or high res tool, and my computer doesn’t have the graphics (?) to support using subject masks. Not to mention the battery was replaced not too long ago and that still sucks butt cheeks. I could go on and on, but I’ll spare you

I’m looking for something newer and obviously faster than my current computer. I don’t particularly care to keep in the Apple brand, if there’s something better out there I’m all for it. It doesn’t have to have the MOST storage because I want to eventually get an external storage device. I would prefer for it to be portable, and would also prefer that it has a usb plug in, bonus if it also has an SD reader (the Mac I’m saying only has 2 usb-c ports, that’s it) Hoping to be able to keep it under $700, it doesn’t have to be the newest model or anything, just reliable. Thanks!!

Discussion/General Cloud Photography tips on OM1-ii?

Hey All, I currently have an OM1-ii and was looking at getting into some cloud photography. I'm lucky enough to have a pilots license so I'm looking at pictures from the ground as well as in the air.

I'm looking at picking up a lens for this. Right now at my local store I feel like I have 2 decent options for what I want to spend. They are the OM systems 75-300m F4.8-6.7 II and a Sigma 56mm 1.4.

On the ground I'm thinking the 75-300mm might be the better choice to get up close and personal with the clouds while still being able to shoot wide. Would the 56mm Sigma be good as well considering the focal length is about 112mm on a FF. In the air I think the Sigma might be king.

If anyone has experience doing cloud photography from both the ground and the air and even more so on an OM1 please let me know what you experience has been and the kind of gear you use. I'm open to any and all advice.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Why does my makeup look different in photos?

• Upvotes

My makeup looks different in photos than in the mirror. Warm shades turn orange and my skin looks washed out.

I’m using my phone camera and window light. No ring light and no editing.

Is it the lighting, white balance or do I just need to edit?

Editing/Post Processing Which software for editing do I actually need?

I spent a whole night trying out various options, I'm completely exhausted and burnt out. I don't know what I actually need.

Requirements:

- Simple to medium difficulty editing, jpeg but sometimes RAW from various cameras/phones.

- Layers/smart masks are an advantage, but not super necessary. Smart tools, decent auto-presets - nice to have, but not a must.

- Doesn't fuck up colors and anything else in the picture, can make something good from RAWs too.

- Catalog functions aren't necessary at all.

What I've tried:

- DxO Lab 9 - liked auto-presets, smart settings. Could live with overall logic and workflow. But VERY laggy, crashed every 2 minutes and loaded my PC a lot.

- DxO Lab 8 - similar but not crashing, but also smart auto-presets are gone, AI masks are gone. Not worth it just for simple edits, still heavy, laggy and not very convenient.

- Affinity Photo - ok I'm too dumb and it's clearly overkill. I couldn't figure out anything AT ALL.

- Lightroom - absolutely fucked up piece of shit with it's catalog/import system, takes a ton of time importing, after that very laggy, unstable and looks awful. Crashes, heavy CPU load, some interface glitches. Looks awful. Not worth it even if I make it work.

What I use now is Acdsee ultimate 10. It's okay for quick edits and amazing as a viewer. Awful for RAW and serious work.

What do I ACTUALLY would like?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Can I get some advice for my new Kodak PixPro?

Hey guys! I just got a Kodak PixPro FZ45, and I want to learn how to take good pictures on it. I’ve looked at TikTok, but every video is just “Put on this filter!” or “Always have the iso at this!” I took an audio/visual technology class in high school and while I did sleep through most of it I know settings have to be adjusted based on the subject and the lighting so I don’t just want to follow a preset. I have been trying to figure out the relationship between ISO, exposure, shutter speed, etc the last 2 hours and it literally feels like I’m back in math class, I understand the simple concept, but the way they change based on so many factors just confuses me so bad. I don’t need a professional lesson or anything; I just don’t want my pictures to turn out low quality or grainy. That being said I know it’s a simple point-and-shoot camera, and I’m not a professional photographer so I know it’s not super great, but I still want to use it to the best of its ability. Please don't put that triangle in the comments. As I said, I understand the basic concept; it’s just how it changes based on specifics that’s getting me. Any advice is appreciated, thank you so much!!!!

Gear/Accessories Tripod for Polaroid Flip?

1): Budget, country, and currency:

Max 250 bucks, USA, USD.

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?

I do not own any tripod. I would like a tripod primarily to use with my Polaroid Flip, but potentially other cameras as well. However, as of right now, that's the only one I own with a tripod mount. I want something thats portable but also sturdy and tall. I'm not really a travel photographer (in the safari or forest sense) but I'd like to be able to carry my tripod around with me to like different people's places for events, or like different urban environments, probably the most adventurous place would be like a bar or something.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?

Primarily people. I want the tripod so I can take sharp photos of people in low light and also potentially experiment with long-exposure. I think a tripod would be particularly useful with my Flip because the Bluetooth app stuff gives me a remote shutter that I want to take advantage of. The camera also does very well in low light (super good flash) so I want a tripod to take advantage of it.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?

Lens Buying Advice Best daily Sony E Zoom lens?

Hello all!

I'm still a fledgling photographer leaving the beginner realm and am looking for an upgrade from the kit lens to pair with my 50mm prime on my a6100.

Cutting to the chase, I'm a student photographer for my universities newspaper and mostly take pictures of people, buildings, and simple objects such as products. I'm looking for a versatile zoom lens in the $200-$500 dollar range, and I'm more than happy buying used to save money as well.

Can't wait to hear what y'all have to say, cheers!

Discussion/General Tips for shutter drag photography?

The majority of pictures I took at a local concert recently turned out like this, and what I was hoping they would look like is a main subject in focus with their motion more hazy if that makes sense. What ended up happening though is everything was blurry. Do I need a bright flash attachment to make them in focus? If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated!!

Discussion/General Does having a better lens than the kitlens make me get sharper/better images?

Just a beginner with a Nikon D3000 and a 18-55mm kitlens wondering if having a better lens than the kitlens greatly affect the output despite the 10.2MP CCD sensor that the D3000 has. I borrowed a Nikon D3300 from a friend before and the images was really sharp compared to my D3000 despite both having an 18-55mm kitlens. The D3000 has a "better looking" no-edit jpg for me tho, but I haven't used the D3300 that much and most of the photos I took using it weren't extracted so I may be wrong. But it was sure easier to use and focus than mine haha, especially that Live view feature that the D3000 lacks.

I know that the lens greatly affect the images you shoot but I just want to know from ppl who used or are still using the D3000 if a better lens really has a huge effect on it or it would still be limited by the sensor.

Lens Buying Advice Lenses similar in price to TTArtisan lenses?

I am a proud owner of two TTArtisan lenses and I love them. While I am very much still in the beginning stages of my hobby/career I simply cannot afford to drop 1k or more on great glass. I have been able to make do on my two cheap lenses from TTartisan and the Kit lens for my Sony a7iii.

However my partner wants to buy me a lens for Christmas. While I would love to ask him to drop 3k on me, I simply cannot do it lol.

Are there any other lens companies that produce decent lenses for affordable prices that I simply don’t know about?

Thanks for any information

Artifical Lighting & Studio Black or White background for using gobos/cucoloris/color gradient?

Hello all. I currently own two fabric backdrops, one white and one black. I generally use the white one since I am usually photographing athletic portraits that are designed to be very highkey/easy to cutout for graphic design etc.

However, I've been wanting to experiment with doing a bit more of a stylized look involving use of a gobo/cucoloris with a gel on a flash to project a cutout texture/pattern on the background. I would do this by turning my backlights (modded with strip boxes) away from the background and gridding them so they act as rim lights on the subject and don't impact the backdrop at all. I guess my real question here is whether or not it is easier to achieve a clean texture or pattern shooting with a white backdrop or a black backdrop? I know that the black texture absorbs more light and thus requires more power to expose for, but I feel like using the white backdrop runs more risk of "washing out" the color. Any tips/suggestions? Thanks a ton.

TL;DR: Is white or black better for projecting color on the backgroun???

Is it distracting or actually a unique frame? I do like the texure & reflections of the glass. I guess what it's framing is not super interesting, but next time I might find something more interesting with a similar frame.

Discussion/General How to streamline taking photo and then printing?

I'm doing a holiday market in December where I'll be taking the photo and then printing it. How do I stream line it to be quick? These are the steps I assume I need to take:

  1. Take photo (camera tethered to Mac)
  2. Auto import photo to a folder
  3. Have that folder auto import to Lightroom (Lightroom doesn't support my Nikon d3200 tether)
  4. Quick edit (possible crop, auto edit or preset)
  5. Print photo

I have a canon selphy ordered that I'll be using. Does the above sound quick enough to do while the person stands and waits for their image? I thought about saying do a lap of the market and come back for it but then I'll have people possibly waiting in line for their photo to be done. To add, I may have a 2hr timeframe Santa will be available for photos thus thinking I'll have a line.
