Announcement Avoiding Scam Cameras this Holiday season!

Especially since the pandemic we have been seeing cheap no-name cameras that offer unbelievable specs (50MP, 8k video), here is a guide on how to spot and avoid them!:

What is a Scamera?:
Scameras are cheap cameras, usually using backup/webcam camera modules, and putting them into shapes that look like camcorders, pocketable Point & Shoots, and interchangeable lens cameras. They often have very high specs, that are not genuine, such as 64MP upscaled from 1 to 4MP (so you get files the size of a 3.5k camera, but with the detail level of the original 2008 iPhone).

Scameras are also often very unreliable, the immense number of people coming here needing help fixing or just returning these cameras (especially post-christmas) is why I am making this post.

Scameras can often be distinguished by the miniscule lenses, I'll try to show that in a comment of this post.

A reliable way can be to check the brand:
Here are known non-scam brands:

Canon
Fujifilm
Hasselblad
Kodak (Kodak make cameras that are close in price to many scameras, and they aren't amazing or super reliable, but they are worlds better than scam brands).
Leica
Nikon
Olympus / OM Systems
Panasonic / Lumix
Pentax
Pixii
Ricoh
Sigma
Sony

Here are known scam brands:

AgfaPhoto (Digital cameras)
Kreate
Yashica
Vivitar
Yixinxin
Yatao
Captainbear
Minolta
NBD
G-Anica

Vivitar, Yashica, and Minolta were once real brands that have now gone bankrupt and the people renting their names sell scameras.
Agfa does make real film and film cameras, but also scam digital cameras.

Questions cameras worth keeping?

I'm moving soon and trying to cut down as much stuff as possible. Currently own 3 digital cameras from my grandad, a friend and one i got as a present years ago. I don't know much beyong point and click when it comes to cameras, and I'm trying to figure out which could be best to keep to try to learn better in the future.

Cameras:

-Olympus x-940 - 4x wide optical zoom 4.7-18.6mm 1:2.6-5.9

-Samsung WB150 - 18x varioplan zoom 40-720mm 1:3.2 -5.8 24mm

-FinePix S6500 fd - 10.7x optical zoom 6.3 mega pixels, super macro 1cm/0.4inch w8-300mm Equiv.135

For reference of future possible use it would be photographing birds and filming. hoping for some help and recommendations as to best option (aware these are all old cameras and non of any high spec).

I have a Panasonic HDC-TM80, and I have the charger and spare batteries, but the charger I have doesn't seem to be working. I plug in the charger, and it glows, but I put in the battery and it doesn't do anything. The inverse also happens. I put on the battery, and it glows. I plug it in? Nothing. Do any of you have any potential reasons why?

Questions Which telephoto lens to choose for my Lumix GX80?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I'm having a hard time choosing right telephoto lens for my Lumix GX80.

I've found two good deals (I think):
- Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 R - brand new, unused and comes with a box and both lens caps - costs 91€ or around 102$

- Panasonic Lumix G Vario 45-150mm f/4.0-5.6 - used but for few events only, comes with KnightX closeup +10 52mm, Fld 52mm, UV 52mm, Cpl 52mm and Polaroid multi-coated UV 52mm lens mounted from the start, only rear cap is included - costs 118€ or around 132$

I am well aware I'm not getting something amazing out of them as I'm beginner in photography, plus budget wise I wouldn't spend a lot on lenses for now, but I'm seeing this as a great deal to have some telephoto lens to use, so I'm grateful for any piece of advice here. Thanks!

Tech Support Sony Cybershot DSC-W570 - Card reader error help :( (C: 13:01)

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello! I've come to reddit because everything else isn't helping too much.

I bought this camera off Facebook marketplace back in August for a decent price, with the issue that the memory card reader wasn't working, which I was aware of! The man who sold it to me said it was his wife's and had just been sitting around for 2-ish years or so and out of nowhere, the memory card kept showing this error and wouldn't work. I had a feeling I could fix it but everything I've done isn't working!

The man said he had used a bunch of different memory cards and to no avail.

I too have tried this. I've tried to clean the memory cards, I've tried to re-insert them, I have done my best to do everything. I even took it into a camera shop and the guy checking it out said there wasn't much to be done since its an older camera.

I don't know if fixing this camera is a completely lost cause and I've been putting it off for quite some time now, but if anyone could provide even a little bit of help and give me hope, I would be eternally grateful!! I'd accept any solution at this point because I am so determined to fix this camera lol.

Thank you!!

Camera Collection Finally organized my kit after 12 years 🥹

For my entire career my gear has been stored basically wherever it fits in my office or throughout my house. Last month I finally went out and bought a wardrobe to store (most) everything in one place. I didn’t realize what a quality of life improvement this would be. Camera prep before a shoot is 2x as easy.

- Main area holds bodies/lenses (+ my old canon 70-200 f2.8 that got obliterated in a car accident many moons ago, RIP)
- Top “drawer” is mostly for memory and battery storage + charging. Those empty bins are where my dead batteries go before they’re charged. Right side is for charged batts only.
- Second drawer is for audio, camera mounting equipment, and straps.
- Third drawer is for action camera things, cameras + mounting
- Bottom drawer is the junk drawer of doom pretty much
- There’s also some space between the floor of the wardrobe and the bottom drawer that I was able to fit a mavic 4 pro creator kit with a hard case, as well as gimbals and FPV drone in its case
- Tripods/pelican 1510 fit between the wardrobe and the wall to the left.

Super pleased with how this turned out, just wanted to share since my wife doesn’t appreciate it like I do 🤠

Discussion Canon R7 vs Sony a6700 — Which Should I Buy?

Thumbnail
gallery
38 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m a beginner photographer looking to buy my first mirrorless camera for the next 5–7 years. My budget is around ₹1 lakh in India.

I’ve shortlisted the Canon EOS R7 and Sony a6700, but I’m confused about which offers better overall value.

My photography interests include:

- Street and travel photography

- Portraits and college events

- Indoor and low-light photography

- Social media content creation

My priorities: Image quality, autofocus, low-light performance, affordable lenses, and long-term value. Photography matters more to me than video.

Which camera would you recommend, and why? I’d especially appreciate feedback from actual owners. Also, which lens would you suggest buying first?

Thanks!

Recommendations Point and shoot buying advice

Budget: Max 350
I'd be buying this camera in the US
Condition: new or used. No preference
Type: point and shoot or possibly mirrorless
Use: photography
Style: portrait, landscape, street
End use: social media

Portability is very important, I would love something that I can put in my purse while on vacation.

I've been looking at the: Sony rx100 m2

I've always had canons, and really really prefer them. Not a huge fan of Nikon. But open to other brands

Discussion Did you initially invest heavily into one of the major brands and later jump the fence to another? What made you change?

People seem to stress a lot when coming in whether they land with canon, Nikon, Sony, whatever… and I get it’s like picking your brand of power tools, it’s an investment! I understand selling your Sony gear for a ‘blad because you needed medium format or maybe you got a taste for leica and you hate having savings, but for most people it makes sense to stick to 1 lens mount and 1 battery supplier etc.

for people who picked and invested in one of the big 3 did you ever come across a reason to be like damn I gotta throw in all my Nikon gear and go full Sony now! Or damn Sony isn’t cutting it any more gotta upgrade to Canon! I’m interested in what factors made you realise the change was totally worth it.

It kinda feels like as much differentiation as there is out there, the one you enjoy having in your hands is the best choice as long as it meets some pretty boilerplate minimum specs that have existed for a pretty long time now..

Questions Never bought a camera before - Animal Shelter Purposes (used)

Budget: $300 and under

Country: USA

Condition: Used

Type of Camera: Mirrorless or DSLR

Intended use: Photos for the shelter website

If photography; what style: Portrait and landscape are fine

If video what style: It’s not required for videos but if it includes video, just for social media to gain views for the animals.

What features do you POSSIBLY need: Fast Autofocus & Burst Mode, Fast Shutter Speed, Wide Aperture Lens (f/2.8 or lower), Silent or Quiet Shutter / Continuous Lighting, Crop Sensor or Full-Frame Mirrorless/DSLR

These are just the things suggested. I don’t need all of them I assume, but not sure which features would be best or even probably in a small camera for the shelter.

But here’s the thing: it needs to be better than my iPhone 13 mini.

Portability: Small? Idk, not a big one for sure.

Cameras you're considering: Nikon D3300, Canon EOS Rebel T5
Cameras you already have: iPhone 13 mini 🙁

Notes: This will be my first camera so forgive me for not knowing much or having things in here that might not be realistic? I’m not sure where to start.

This camera is a Sony cyber shot DSC-t300. I recently dropped it and now it’s blurry when I try to take pictures. But it sometimes focuses on certain types of zoom ratios and I’ll do anything to not throw this camera away
