Political Question Why are Shane Gillis fans so sensitive?

This really pissed off a lot of his fans in another group where I posted it.

The people who call others "soy boys" and "snowflakes" tend to be the most fragile of all people and are just projecting.

64

u/2wacky2backy 5h ago

Yep, no one with any confidence in themselves or their masculinity talks like that.

u/Molsem 2h ago

The projection is so blatant, I never would have believe just how deluded people can get, outside like insane cult settings.

17

u/r3volver_Oshawott 4h ago

It's kind of the ultimate deflection, "edgy" is the most common thing for unfunny people to go to, because then when nobody laughs you just pretend everyone who criticizes you is just offended

I was raised with Chappelle show and South Park it takes an entirely new offensive to get any type of rise out of me.

50

u/CarelessFunction9806 5h ago

I think the issue is with nuance. Chapelle show and south park had some genuinely smart writing. Everything Ive seen from Shane just seems crude for the sake of being crude. Kind of like Amy schumer, or that one kid who keeps disrupting class for attention

27

u/omjy18 5h ago

I've always hear it as funny doesnt have to be offensive but offensive has to be funny or youre just an asshole. I liked him in tires but its a situational sitcom not just telling jokes

7

u/CarelessFunction9806 4h ago

Yeah he was alright in Tires, I definitely think he's better with a cast than on his own. I only saw the first season or so but it still seemed like half his lines were just calling coworkers gay

4

u/omjy18 4h ago

Oh it was but it was more creative because he had a cast to bounce things off of. Its how the office worked with the jim/ Dwight thing. Put of context its just mean but when its in context of this kinda thing its actually funny

u/Highplowp 4h ago

It had social commentary. This is some guy going “huh?” and mugging his punch lines. The snl sub is hilarious right now. Shane is going to have to lay low in East Timor for a bit, hopefully. There are great comedians that lose out to these manosphere adjacent twat waffles.

9

u/No_Accountant3232 3h ago

I'm glad he said Fuck on air. Lorne has an unreasonable hardon for the guy but is famous about Fuck. Maybe it'll snap him out of whatever need he has to keep him hanging around

Bill Burr did his SNL monologue making fun of white women. It was nuanced and thoughtful and therefore funny. This was not.

This is why I don’t understand the outrage, tons of comedians have made even more outrageous jokes but this is for whatever reason where the line is drawn? It makes no sense

1

u/Ponce-Mansley 53m ago

It has nothing to do with offensive comedy, everything to do with a hack comedian standing on one of the biggest stages on national television and just saying "So anyways, women are whores am I right?"

There's barely an attempt at a joke, it's just a dumbass being platformed to say something lazy, dated, and shitty for no reason

South Park and Chapelle both have nuance about it. Gillis's work is like his dress style: sloppy, flat, and unappealling. It's lazy work and he expects to be rewarded for it.

3

u/Linksgolf2347 3h ago

He certainly gets rewarded for it. Not sure if he expects it…..but he gets it

→ More replies (12)

3

u/glacier1982 2h ago

I agree, but I do think there's some raw talent there. The thing is, I don't think he's the least bit interested in refining his style. He will forever come off "as is".

2

u/Bladeoraded 2h ago

When was the last time you watched chapelle show lmao?

His stand up has nuance, the show brute force racism in a hilarious way

2

u/Lane-O-Mac 2h ago

Tires is incredibly touching and nuanced.

Remember when Chapelle's "nuance" got him cancelled 4 years ago? It's almost like trying to police what people can call funny is a stupid thing to do.

honestly I couldn't get into his stand up. but as a comedy actor like in Tires he is great

5

u/Radcouponking 4h ago

I agree. I don't understand why he's considered a stand up comedian when everything I've seen has been amateurish (including his latest SNL monologue) but he is really great on Tires.

They’re mad because a lot of people actually did find it funny

2

u/OG_Internet_User 1h ago

I havn’t heard it but if they are mad I think its hilarious.

→ More replies (4)

27

u/NecessaryUsername69 4h ago

Because some people revel in outrage and being mad and feeling morally superior. They need only the tiniest sliver of an excuse.

For the record - and saying this as a Gillis fan - it was a pretty poor joke, and the use of “whore” was (in my opinion) lazy and a little callous, and certainly deserving of some blowback. But this torrent of outrage is fucking laughable, and the people responding with personal gibes about Shane are in no position to be accusing anyone else of being a shitty human being.

14

u/BigLebowskiFC 3h ago

There was definitely a joke in there but like you said the use of “whore” was lazy and overall it felt like it was a joke at open mic night.

That said, his whole set felt lazy IMO.

5

u/NecessaryUsername69 3h ago

Exactly. Guy doesn’t deserve the character assassination he’s getting, but absolutely deserves a kick in the pants for being a good comedian resorting to lazy, dumb, pointlessly offensive material.

1

u/Independent_Bet_324 49m ago

Most people havent seen actual real life whores so the joke doesnt make sense to them.

Honestly the joke works if you have seen whores working the street trying to get attention.

Especially if you were saw the progression of fashion over the last twenty years.

Like honest to god gym clothing of today is the kind of shit whores of the 2010’s would wear

2

u/Spiritual-Ad8062 2h ago

If you didn’t know Gillis before tonight, as many in the audience did not, he really did an unfunny monologue.

I have seen him in passing, and let’s just say he won’t be a comedian I pay $$$ to see. I don’t think he’s that funny.

That’s it. The monologue was bad/lazy comedy writing.

Exactly right. Gillis doesn’t deserve the vitriol he’s getting, but he does deserve a smack around the head for being (in my opinion) a better comedian than should be resorting to such a lazy, crude joke.

17

u/botle 5h ago

These types of jokes are not funny because they're all the one same joke.

Step 1: Say something vaguely controversial
Step 2: Smile

The joke is "Ooooh I said X, but you're not supposed to say X!"

X changes with every joke, but it's still the same joke. And it's funny only the first time you hear it, which probably was on some talk show in the 60:s.

3

u/Signal_Werewolf_1955 5h ago

Do you suppose X should be J? For "joke?"

5

u/kranzberry 5h ago

No, “J” is for when I’m trying to type “I”, but my phone doesn’t autocorrect for some fucking reason.

2

u/Signal_Werewolf_1955 5h ago

That dastardly auto-incorrect.

8

u/dangeldud 5h ago

This wasn't what the joke was though.

4

u/botle 5h ago edited 4h ago

It's been a whole day since I heard it, so you'll have to correct me if I am wrong.

But was it not a combination of the old "I said something you're not supposed to say" template and the old "why does she show cleavage if she doesn't want me to look at her boobs" template?

Both are tired old overused joke templates.

The problem with revealing Mens workout clothing is the penis naturally shrinks during strenuous activity. Are compression shorts specifically designed to accentuate your butt cheeks and ass crack considered modest or something? Because that is common to see.

Women should be able to wear whatever they want. Also, the way they dress is not an excuse to be a creep, but he’s not necessarily wrong, even if the way he said it was not PC.

When there's a band, a comic, a TV show that I'm not a fan of, I simply don't watch or listen to them. No worries

5

u/Mundane-Impact-1347 6h ago

Same for people who enjoyed the jokes but not the commentary that followed. Everyone is free to tune in or out at any time.

2

Most of the things Gillis said weren't jokes. He offended women, lesbians, and people who understand what a joke is.

→ More replies (5)

9

u/nhgardenart25 6h ago

I do think we’ve become overly sensitive in regards to comedy. Good example is the comedy roast of Kevin Hart. He told everyone to not hold back and they sure didn’t, including Gillis.

2

u/Artisttype1984 6h ago

Same. Holding back shouldn't apply with comics, art.

And obviously you know who/what you're getting with Shane or other comics, if someone doesn't like him, I can respect that and would say simply don't watch or listen to him

20

u/zorg-18082 5h ago

I don’t understand this timeline. He’s a comedian, not someone to be taken seriously. They tell jokes. That wasn’t even a mildly offensive joke compared to the history of all jokes ever told. How is this still a story?

It seems like it’s the other way around honestly. I couldn’t give a rats ass whether or not somebody thinks any particular joke is funny.

Seems like an awful lot of people are butt hurt by the word he used though.

I mean, are we all supposed to just pretend that many women are not dressing like whores? Isn’t that the entire point of those outfits? What are we doing here?

9

u/ChudwellFoidbane 4h ago

I love how most the arguments against this are some variation of, men are just jealous women can be hot in public and they can’t, and then also completely missing the fact that his joke was dunking on himself. How about we just be more modest as a society? Men and women. Everytime I go to a bar or something I see ass hanging out of shorts or titties about to pop out of a flimsily tied shirt. Like yes ladies you’re hot but we gotta stop as a society with this gooner brain shit it’s genuinely damaging to all of us. Ladies you are more than just your ass and titties and you don’t need to show them off to be hot

If you can find the clip of Matt showing Shane his Native American ceremonial flute (432 Hz), do yourself a favour and watch it. It's truly enlightening.

More fake outrage. Terminally online people find new problems to be outraged about everyday. So odd to me

You could just ask “why are fans so sensitive”. People take it as a personal attack when you attack someone or something that they like. You’re attacking a part of them. That’s why they’re so sensitive.

You should put a little piggy nose on him

2

u/OrdinaryAccount479 4h ago edited 4h ago

You gotta remember, the people offended and outraged by this are the same people that were busting up, rolling on the floor, laughing their asses off about the public assassination of a man.

Gillis’ monologue was low quality shit. But the people super offended by it are fragile as can be. Everything sucks.

2

u/FinishWarm1746 2h ago

theyre not fans if theyre offended

u/mcvmccarty 2h ago

I bet this is going to be a thread full of constructive comments and careful, considerate responses.

And no one would give a single fuck if a woman made fun of the way men dress at the gym.

Anyone remember when he sucked trump off at the ESPYs for like 5 minutes in the opener?

u/Stickeminastew1217 5h ago

I think people are largely overreacting to a bad set that was definitely in poor taste. Buuuut, like, c'mon man, read the fucking room.

I also see people defending it as being a self deprecating joke, and they're obviously missing the point. Yes, the set was mostly him making fun of himself, but the line he's getting shit for was not. Nor was it the sort of joke where you say something shitty but the joke is that you're a shitty person for saying it. He just called women whores. There's like, 80 ways you could have done it that wouldn't land as badly. Hell, you could have hard committed. Done like, awooga eyes and talked about how you would have gone sooner if you knew women were dressing like that, and it STILL probably would have landed better because people would at least recognize that the joke is that you're being a perv (I'm not saying it would have been a good joke, but it would have been at least a joke).

8

u/Yehrmahm 4h ago

No, that would have been a FAR better joke.

I watched some old Rodney Dangerfield clips the other day, and his work has aged shockingly well — because that crass, obnoxious character/persona was the butt of like every joke, no matter who that character was talking about.

It’s like these guys think the joke is supposed to be Dangerfield’s fat ugly bitch of a wife.

Fuck that guy. Calling women whores for wearing what they want is the definition of misogyny.

Besides that, he's a shitty comedian.

5

u/Naive-You-2850 4h ago

Flexbottom hasn’t been to a gym in their life to see how women dress like whores and pretend it’s “just what feels comfortable.”

5

u/BabblingTower 5h ago edited 4h ago

...No I think you'd have to be using "whores" in a derogatory way for it to be misogyny, and even that's a stretch. Misogyny is hatred of, aversion to, or prejudice against women. He was saying they dress scantily, and the focus of the joke was self-deprecation, not deprecating them for their attire. The fact that he says that he's not allowed to look implies that he wants to, right? So, not really disparaging. Crass for sure though.

If he had said something more like they shouldn't be at the gym because they're just whores, that would be misogyny and worthy of outrage.

I think toeing the line with this "whores" joke was the point. That and the F-bomb he let slip have made headlines, have people talking about SNL...

2

u/_N_S_FW 46m ago

Why use the term whores then. Just admit you like it snd it turns you on snd move on. Christ alive the mental gymnastics to avoid admitting that

3

u/TankUMrMinor 3h ago

Lol is the right still fantasizing about cancel culture

4

u/GeneralAudience8427 2h ago

They do try to get a comedian with widespread appeal in trouble every couple months for doing comedy so I get the urge to jump to cancel culture.

Honestly I think it’s just a few influencers trying to make a name for themselves by creating something out of nothing. Look at what Chelsea Handler tried after the Netflix roasts

Really?

So far I've only seen people on that one SNL sub be super offended at...what they think he said in most cases.

Don't know if you heard the full joke, but what you quoted ain't the joke.

Also, him being so unnecessarily over the top is part of the joke.

When you phrase it like you did, it's not funny.

News flash- a good percentage of women who wear this shit to the gym for tiktok content are whores. Why does one have to be misogynistic to say it out loud? Am I also a Jew hating anti-semite for calling out dropping bombs on babies? Life is about to get pretty rough for you sensitive folk.

2

u/SnooSquirrels9440 4h ago

I like Shane. I don’t care if others do or don’t. Jokes either land or they don’t. I also know some comedians are for some people and not others. There is a tiny sliver of truth in jokes; as someone who frequents the gym he’s not wrong about revealing clothes.. and what’s worse are the people “streaming” and recording themselves. I honestly don’t care how close to naked you want to be, but don’t be mad if you draw attention.
