File icons missing after update to 26.04.1 LTS

I recently updated to 26.04.1 LTS. During the update, a few errors occurred in relation to LibreOffice, but in subsequent use there have been no problems.

However, all of my file icons except images in the file manager have reverted to black "document" looking icons. XLSX, PPT, DOCX, TXT, everything looks the same. App icons and desktop icons are still OK.

When I open the Properties menu by right clicking, I get no option to change individual file icons.

It's a bit of a pain. Does anyone have a clue as to how to repair the icons?

Thanks!

Ubuntu, the best gaming distribution?

I'm looking for advice/tips. My goal is a personal desktop with up to date gaming related stuff, but everything else stable boring Ubuntu LTS. I'm tired of constant rolling updates and chance for breakages with distros like CachyOS, but I don't want to give up gaming related updates. I don't want to sacrifice much stability but want to optimize when possible.

I have over a decade on Ubuntu, Debian, and their derivatives and a year or two spread between Bazzite and CachyOS. I missed .deb and the convenience and calmness those distributions have for personal desktop and gaming use, so I'm back to Ubuntu.

It's a shame there's not a gaming optimized derivative of Ubuntu out there but I don't think there is.

Here's what I've done so far. Did I do too much? Not enough? Let me know what you think.

  1. Up to date optimized kernel. I used Liquorix.

  2. Up to date graphic drivers using kisak-mesa ppa.

  3. Use official Steam .deb, not snap

  4. Use CachyOS proton version

  5. Use Feral GameMode, at least on demanding games

  6. Use zram-tools for fast compressed swap (if ever needed)

  7. Change swapiness and virtual memory allocation (vm.max_map_count = 2147483642, vm.swappiness = 10)

I know I could have went with Fedora but I would miss .deb and LTS too much, and Linux Mint or Kubuntu or something too but I personally prefer default Ubuntu (Gnome) desktop environment usually.

For context I'm running Ubuntu 25.10 on an older Dell Optiplex 9020. Firmware A25. I initially thought it was the drive, swapped it out. Same issue, let me know if there's any solution to this or any questions you may need to further explain. I'm a noob to Ubuntu and Linux in general so please go easy on me.

This is after an upgrade to the newest kubuntu lts. 26.04.1 this also occurs on a fresh live boot usb.

Cpu: amd ryzen 5000 series

Gpu : 6700xt

I've already tried reinstalling the gpu drivers. What are my next troubleshooting steps?

Ps. Pc also occasionally freezes shortly after boot

Also

Live boot usb works properly on seperate pc.

Amd ryzen 5800x3d

Radeon 7900xtx

Is there any way this isn't the gpu dieing?

Just got an Acer Nitro V15, put Ubuntu on it, and it feels great. Why all the hate for Ubuntu in the community

Post image
130 Upvotes

I just bought an Acer Nitro V15 laptop and installed Ubuntu on it. It’s been amazing how smooth the system feels, but I don't really get why there’s so much hate towards the Ubuntu distro (a lot of videos on social media show this hate for Ubuntu). This isn't my first time with Linux—my gaming PC runs on Bazzite, which is also fantastic. But isn't the point of using Linux, or any distro for that matter, to have the freedom to customize everything, take full control of your OS, and escape Windows (which gets worse every day with its Copilot integration)? Am I wrong about this, or is the hate actually real?

Why does ubuntu or debian not have a built in feature to not store metadata in any files ever?

So I feel like dynamic metadata removal done at the OS level in order to not have to constantly remember to use exiftool and have no file metadata in any file ever (at least for identifying metadata) would be fabulous for ubuntu or debian.

Has anyone thought of this? Let’s say it was a configuration in a file you could enable. Why does no one do this?

EDIT: my reasoning is some people care a lot about privacy and don’t want to forget to remove metadata before uploading a file.

When I updated the "Blur my Shell" extension on Ubuntu 24.04 (which has been behaving very poorly lately), I was met with what you see in the image. Basically, when my laptop is on the lock screen, the top bar appears—something that didn't happen before.

Unable to connect to the internet even though the wired and wireless connection are up

Hi everyone,

First of all, I'm not techsavy or really familiar with Ubuntu, so please forgive my imprecision

I have a home server that I used during the last year, build on Ubuntu. Everything worked fine until yesterday. I had a schedule power outage in my area and since the reboot, I'm unable to access any website, or resolve to some address.

The weird thing is that I can ssh into my server using both my wired and wireless addresses.

I tried updating my server using apt-offline but nothing changed.

I tried to edit my .yaml file for netplan but didn't work either.

My last resort would be to wipe my machine and restart from scratch, but if I can prevent myself from doing this, it would be better.

If you have any ideas or any guidance for me, it would be much appreciated !

Ubuntu is good for RTX 5070 Ti?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Yes, Ubuntu is an excellent and fully compatible operating system for the RTX 5070 Ti, provided that you meet a few crucial technical requirements related to NVIDIA's latest architecture (Blackwell).

Today, the Linux platform offers a great environment for both professional work and entertainment. Here is a detailed summary of how this duo performs in practice and what you need to look out for:

1. What is the RTX 5070 Ti under Ubuntu best suited for?

Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning (AI): This is the main reason why developers choose Ubuntu. Tools like PyTorch, TensorFlow, Stable Diffusion, or local LLM models run natively on Linux, offering better VRAM management and higher stability than on Windows.

Gaming (Steam & Proton): Thanks to the Proton translation layer on Steam, you can easily run most modern AAA games on Ubuntu. A graphics card of this class ensures excellent smoothness at 1440p and 4K resolutions.

Creative and 3D Work: Programs like Blender have full support for hardware ray tracing (OptiX / Ray Tracing) and Tensor cores under Linux.

2. Crucial condition: The requirement for "-open" drivers

The most important technical issue with the RTX 5000 series on Linux-based systems is driver selection. The Blackwell architecture on Linux requires the installation of open kernel modules (marked as -open).

Traditional, older proprietary drivers do not properly support these chips, which in the event of an installation failure can result in a black screen or the system failing to detect the card. For full stability and support for CUDA 12.8+ libraries, you should install packages such as nvidia-driver-570-open (or newer).

3. How to prepare Ubuntu for the RTX 5070 Ti? (Step-by-step)

To ensure the card runs at full performance and without errors, follow these steps before and during configuration:

BIOS/UEFI Settings (Important!): Before booting the system, enter your motherboard's BIOS and make sure to enable Above 4G Decoding and Resizable BAR (Re-BAR). The lack of these options is the most common cause of problems with the Linux kernel detecting the new card.

System Version Choice: It is recommended to use Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or newer. It features up-to-date Linux kernel packages, which are essential for proper support of the modern PCIe 5.0 bus.

Driver Installation via Terminal: The safest installation method after clearing old drivers is to use the command that installs the official open module:

bash

sudo apt update

sudo apt install linux-headers-$(uname -r) build-essential dkms

sudo apt install nvidia-driver-570-open

sudo reboot

Black screen and spinning wheel when locked.

Running Ubuntu 26.04.1 in VMware, latest updates installed. Whenever I sign out or lock, the screen goes black with a spinning wheel. The only way I can get out of it is by restarting.

Any ideas what might cause this?

System won't start after 26.04.01 upgrade from 24.04LTS

So... last night I decided to upgrade from 24.04 to 26.04. My initial idea was to stay up until the whole thing was done but the progress bar was advancing painfully slowly so I went to bed. And this morning I woke up to things not working.

When I tried to restart the PC via the power switch, here's what I saw:

  1. grub worked, and the USB system worked (this will be relevant), so I selected Ubuntu.

  2. as the system started, USB stopped working (the lights on my keyboard switched off)

  3. a screen appeared, "waiting for cryptfs..." instead of the prompt for the cryptfs password

  4. the screen blanked and I got a initramfs prompt, but USB doesn't work so I can't type anything.

Fortunately I have a Windows disk I can start from so I could come post this on reddit, but... how fscked am I w/r/t my Linux installation?..

Issue with PulseAudio Install Ubuntu 26.04 Hyper-V

I am trying to install using this Bing Search for Hyper-V No Sound

When I get to /bootstrap && ./configure PULSE_DIR=~/pulseaudio.src - it comes back and says it cannot find pulseaudio.src. I checked and it does not exist. So I'm not sure why this file is missing

I can't install anything

Hi, guys! I tried to install Ubuntu on my new ASUS V16 laptop, but I couldn't manage to install anything; even after adding every repository imaginable, updating and upgrading the system: the few apps in the appstore download endlessly, and many others, such as Steam or Spotify, are completely absent. I tried to install them directly from terminal, it failed, and even with apt search I couldn't find nothing.

I managed to install Linux Mint, and it works effortlessly, but obviously I want Ubuntu, not Mint.

The only cause of this that I found on Google was the Wi-Fi card driver problems, but Firefox worked perfectly and so did the update and upgrade commands. Did anyone have similar problems? If yes, were you able to solve that? How?

Any way to keep one monitor 'fixed' and the other two change according to workspace?

As per the title! I'm running 24.04 LTS, my current options are:

Workspace on primary display only (1x fixed)
Workspaces on all displays (0x fixed)

Anyone found a middle ground to get 2x monitors on workspace, and 1x fixed?

GPU not loaded?? My laptop does not recognize the driver

EDIT: Upon more research (and by that I mean trying the same commands I punched in yesterday) I learned that there are 3 things I can't upgrade due to phasing. All three of them keep me from downloading the recommended 595 Open driver because one of those kernels is a dependency. I guess I gotta wait now. I will still be listening to the comments though, because as far as I can tell the driver being up and running and the laptop recognizing the GPU are two different things. Please don't downvote me if I said something wrong, you *do* know better than me

I downloaded the recommended Nvidia driver months ago, and did everything the websites said. For some reason, the GPU was "not loaded" and I was using the AMD graphics that come with the processor instead.

I have no idea how this is possible. Zero clue on what to do with the kernel.

How do I load the Nvidia GPU and finally start to use it?

If it helps, I finally managed to write a xorg conf file, that seems to be working but it does not recognize Device0, which should be the GPU. I think.

Login with IR camera a la Windows Hello

Hey folks.

I've been a long time user of Howdy and it's been overall ok-ish in terms of experience. I mostly use it on Debian and occasionally on some other laptops that had Ubuntu.

Long story short, I was a bit upset with how the setup looks, dependencies and overall user experience and decided to try implementing a similar functionality myself, but in a more "modern" way with some extra goodies in terms of overall security. Since I don't have a large fleet of laptops with IR cameras to test this, I'd kindly ask the community to give it a try and leave some feedback if possible:

Much appreciated!
