System won't start after 26.04.01 upgrade from 24.04LTS
So... last night I decided to upgrade from 24.04 to 26.04. My initial idea was to stay up until the whole thing was done but the progress bar was advancing painfully slowly so I went to bed. And this morning I woke up to things not working.
When I tried to restart the PC via the power switch, here's what I saw:
grub worked, and the USB system worked (this will be relevant), so I selected Ubuntu.
as the system started, USB stopped working (the lights on my keyboard switched off)
a screen appeared, "waiting for cryptfs..." instead of the prompt for the cryptfs password
the screen blanked and I got a initramfs prompt, but USB doesn't work so I can't type anything.
Fortunately I have a Windows disk I can start from so I could come post this on reddit, but... how fscked am I w/r/t my Linux installation?..

Are you sure it isn't ecryptfs ?
I ran into a similar problem with a 24.04 -> 26.04 upgrade recently. ecryptfs was deprecated years ago (2019?) and they finally removed it from the 26.04.
To get my data back, I had to boot with a 24.04 USB, recover the keys (AI was helpful there, since I only had to go through this process once), copy the data (rsync) to another PC, and then install Ubuntu 26.04, copy the data back, and Bob was my uncle.

Ran into problem with upgrade too. I upgraded a VM running pihole & immich to 26.04. Everything went well but at night it just crashed giving Kernel panic error.

Oof, that's a rough morning. The USB dropping out right when you need to type the cryptfs password is the killer here. Since you can get into grub, try editing the boot entry (hit 'e' on the Ubuntu line) and adding `iommu=soft` or `usbcore.autosuspend=-1` to the linux line. Might keep the ports alive long enough to get the prompt.
If that doesn't work, boot from a live USB, chroot in, and check what the upgrade actually did to your initramfs. Sometimes an interrupted upgrade leaves the modules half-configured and the keyboard driver doesn't get included. You'd need to rebuild it with `update-initramfs -u` while chrooted. Not the end of the world but definitely a project for a day off.
