Black screen and spinning wheel when locked.

Running Ubuntu 26.04.1 in VMware, latest updates installed. Whenever I sign out or lock, the screen goes black with a spinning wheel. The only way I can get out of it is by restarting.

Any ideas what might cause this?

Had something similar happen with a VM few months back. The display manager gets stuck trying to wake up after lock, can be annoying to track down.

Try switching to lightdm instead of gdm, that fixed for me.

Thanks, switching to lightdm seems to have fixed it.

Same here, but AFAIK it entirely depends on the desktop you are working with or selected, I noticed that gdm3 works fine with gnome and lightdm with the rest of the rest of them, specially if you use/work with KDE, I hope it helps

Yeah, switching from GDM to lightdm seems to have fixed it.
