For anyone on the fence about the Grupe signing, here's what the Colts sub had to say when the team waived him to go with Spencer Shrader.
r/LosAngelesRams • u/RandomLAFan • 9h ago
[Jackson] Sean McVay, unprompted, in part of his response to a question about the state of special teams at this point: "I have a lot of confidence in (special teams coordinator) Bubba Ventrone. There's no changes that are going to be made there. And we're going to keep working."
Some other notes:
- In wake of Alaric Jackson's suspension, Sean McVay says David Quessenberry will start at LT for Rams. Alaric will also likely appeal his suspension.
- Team will also open OL Keagen Trost's 21-day practice window this week.
- Myles Garrett's clock will not start this week, as Sean said was likely to be the case last week.
- Sean confirms the Rams made a change at kicker, moving on from Harrison Mevis and signing Blake Grupe. "Ultimately we need to get better production" and hopeful they can get that from Grupe.

DISCUSSIONS The overreactions are wild
Don't get me wrong; this team can't keep losing the way they did last night. It's embarrassing. Though what's more embarrassing is the "fire Shula", "division is out of reach", and "this team is ass" takes causally thrown around here. Doomers gotta stahhhhp.
> Fact 1: This team is literally a blocked FG and terrible DPI call away from being 4-1.
> Fact 2: The defense is top 10 in yards allowed per game (3rd), EPA/play (10th), and 3rd down conversion rate allowed (9th). The defense and/or the defensive play calling is not the problem. Unfortunately, we match up horribly with mobile QBs.
> Fact 3: This team has yet to play up to its potential (especially the offense). Only the win against the Giants was a "clean" game.
> Fact 4: Special teams is fucked. BUT if McVay can be honest with himself (that this is his mess) and commits to the strategy (All Gas, No Break i.e - FGs are a last resort, minimize ST role in the game), it could partially mitigate the issue.
> Fact 5: Division is far from decided. 9ers have a tough Nov + Dec sched and mounting injuries. Hawks have a 1-dimensional offense that's turnover prone.
Everybody gotta chill.

DISCUSSIONS Is this a Chris Shula stat?
Unbelievable when the offense plays this way and we still find a way to lose. I feel for Shula but his chances of becoming a Head coach seem very far away right now.
The window is small and closing, this needs to be addressed going back to last season. Yes the special teams are atrocious but the defense is a much bigger factor and issue that a good DC would have fixed by now.

UPDATE 11: 47 a.m. ET: Per the NFL, it’s not a Personal Conduct Policy issue. Jackson will be subject to discipline under the normal pregame/in-game/postgame rules
This means Alaric Jackson previous conduct will not be used to determine his punishment.
Most likely just a single game suspension and maybe even just a fine. Chubb created the conflict by screaming at Jackson. He then put his finger in Jackson’s face. If that’s not antagonizing I don’t know what is. I also believe it was an open hand but can’t be for sure.
Overall think it’s a one game suspension. We struggled so much against the falcons without him. However, I hope we can find a way to keep the offense productive.

All in on the field
We went all in on getting players. Why didn't we trust Stafford to get 5 yards, even if it took two tries.
And if McVay is too loyal to fire Shula ,should he step down ?
I think it's time to stop being conservative.
Nobody wanted Shula as a HC.
He is still the same scared DC we had last year.
Why get the players if you aren't going to be aggressive on the field.
I felt sick after that game last night.
What does everybody think?

DISCUSSIONS Should Shula be fired?
The Rams should consider firing Chris Shula because the defense hasn't consistently played up to its talent level.
His conservative scheme and reliance on zone coverage can limit the abilities of the players they’ve invested in, and the defense has struggled in important games.
With McVay and Stafford trying to win another Super Bowl, they can’t afford to waste their championship window on a defense that fails when it matters most. At some point, if the same problems keep showing up, it’s fair to question whether Shula is the right guy to lead the defense.

DISCUSSIONS Couple of mis-steps by Mcvay havent seen anyone point out yet.
- going for 2 pt conversion when the game was 20-19 is a mistake imo. I get the thought process of going up 3 there to keep the fg lead, but I feel it was a little short sighted because the way the teams were going, a fg wasnt going to be the difference but also because it then allows them to tie the game with the 2pt conversion once the game is 27-27 whereas the game SHOULD have been 28-27 us if we simply kick the PAT. I feel like putting the game potentially to a 2 score game is more important in the future than making sure we are tied with a fg early in the 2nd half. Rather than it being potentially 27-19 it could have been 28-19 and having that 2 possession lead is the crucial part of the game theory imo.
Ultimately it didnt change much because the bills ended up scoring to make it 34-27 but there exists a world where it would have been 28-27 with the bills driving late and that puts a little more pressure on them to know they NEED a fg or td to take the lead and the game isnt tied.
- The amount of time they let run off the clock at the end of regulation was ALMOST as bad as some of the timing blunders we saw across the league. If kyren didnt score there on 1st down then it would have been 2nd and goal with like 3-4 seconds left and leaving us time for literally one play. Whereas if we had snapped it earlier at like 20 seconds and dont get it on the kyren run then it would be 2nd and goal with like 15 or so seconds left which GIVES YOU THE TIME required to be able to run all 4 downs if needed. We could have easily lost that game on 2nd and goal and RAN out of time despite it being only 2nd down and despite us HAVING the time originally.

DISCUSSIONS Ramily it’s a new day, go outside touch some grass everything will be okay lol
We’re 2-3, I get it, not ideal after 5 games, but definitely not a playoff death sentence. Mevis hopefully gets relieved of his duties today, but outside of that, everything else I’m seeing in here is an extreme overreaction. Offense is finding its rhythm and something tells me Les Snead got one more rabbit in his hat at the trade deadline for another offensive playmaker.
Alaric Jackson will be suspended, it wasn’t smart to punch an opponent after a game. That’s a grown man we don’t know what was said after Chubb put his hand in his face, he’ll face his suspension and we’ll survive this next portion of the schedule without him. But to hear y’all whine to release one of the best graded LT in the league? Yeah the Rams not stupid lol
Lastly, our defense will be just fine. Yesterday was clearly a bad scheme for one of the hardest players in the game to defend. Our defense has been solid in both the pass and run game until last night when we couldn’t contain Josh Allen, but you learn from that. We’re a top 5 defense that’s ADDING MYLES FREAKING GARRETT! Like let’s chill and check back in at the bye week when we 7-3.

Rams’ kicking game - Remember that time during the Greatest Show on Turf?
There was a game during the Kurt Warner GSOT era when the Rams’ kicker was injured. The solution? For the rest of the game, they simply didn’t kick. No extra points, no field goals (honestly don’t remember what they did for kickoffs, probably had the punter do it). But the team was that good. They just didn’t kick. Go for 2, go for it on 4th down even if you’re in field goal range. Not saying this year’s team is GSOT level (could be if they clean up ST and penalties), but why not try it?
