Music/Entertainment Cities in the LA area (excluding LA itself) that have hit songs about them

We know LA itself has its fair share of hit songs (the most famous of which plays at Dodger Stadium after every home win), but what about the other cities in the area?

For this topic, only count actual cities that are independently governed and not under the jurisdiction of LA City Hall (sorry, Hollywood, South LA, and the SFV). Also don’t count unincorporated areas of LA County, like East LA.

The only one off the top of my head is The Little Old Lady from Pasadena. I know there are bound to be some obvious ones I won’t believe I missed.

Culture/Lifestyle Why isn’t college football more popular here?

First of all, as a Bruin, I welcome you to join the bandwagon. We will happily take you all.

Second, yeah where is everyone? Most people feel like if they didn’t go to UCLA or USC, they can’t root for them, but I don’t find that to be true at all from other schools.

I’ve met tons of people who are fans of Michigan, Alabama, Texas, etc and maybe only 1/4 actually went there.

I know we have a lot of pro teams, but so do a lot of other places. Why not like both?

The beginning of a new era at BUR

Here's some photos from the new terminal at BUR. Overall a great improvement over the old terminal. Beware that there's little to no food options at the moment but I'm sure anyone that frequents BUR is used to not buying the overpriced food as it is. None of the restaurants are open yet. Starbucks was still setting up their kiosk.

Has there been a significant uptick in the homeless population recently? Feels like it. Moved back to LA August after being away for 2 years.

A few conditions documented around Los Angeles. The photos include deteriorating brick foundations, moisture-damaged deck framing and gaps where soil no longer supports portions of a footing. Sharing a look at parts of local homes that usually stay out of sight.

Local Politics early voting is open now!

some useful deadlines -

• you can drop off official vote-by-mail ballots to any official ballot box today, Tuesday Oct 13 until election day, Tuesday Nov. 3.
• if you mail your mail-in ballot by US Post, you are advised to mail it by Tuesday Oct 27, a week before the election, to ensure it is counted. this is due to changed rules at the federal level.
• if you want to vote in person and avoid the lines, in person polls will be open starting Saturday Oct 24, 10 days before election.
• Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. by law, your employer is required to allow you time off to go vote if needed.
• you can track the status of your ballot here.

it is expected to be an unusual election. incidents of voter intimidation can be reported to the state elections investigation team.

i imagine you could also report it federally, should that be a useful avenue to pursue.

stay safe out there.

News [KCRW] Saving California’s ancient oak trees with DNA analysis

One day about four years ago, a scientist named Scott Butterfield was surveying a nature preserve north of Santa Barbara. The area is home to more than a million majestic old oak trees. As he looked around, Butterfield, who works at The Nature Conservancy, saw something alarming.

"As we were driving through, you could physically see that these big giant oak trees were shedding limbs. Dead, big-diameter tree limbs just laying on the ground. And I’m talking hundreds," Butterfield recalls.
