Bass defending Forest lawn drive pretending she didn’t block the project cause the cemeteries told her so
47

Also funny when Bass implied that there were nefarious organizations backing Raman on that project. Like what, is there a “Big Bike” and “Let’s not run people over” cartel that I don’t know about?

The residents of forest lawn can’t vote…. Because they’re dead.
Also most of the people driving through forest lawn drive are from Glendale/Burbank. We can’t vote in the LA Mayors race.
5
u/YasielPuigsWeed 5h ago
I’m not from Glendale or Burbank and I take Forest Lawn 2-3x a week
-1
u/ImperialRedditer Glendale 5h ago
Good for you. I do believe you count as 1 person unless you count yourself as 1000 people.
2
u/YasielPuigsWeed 5h ago
Do you think only people from Burbank and Glendale need to get between the 101 and 134?
-1
u/ImperialRedditer Glendale 5h ago
I do believe that you count as 1 person. Unless you’re the only person who uses Forest Lawn Drive, then my statement is false.

u/sleepytimegirl In the garden, crumbling 6h ago
Dead people having an outsize influence on this election.
-11
u/YasielPuigsWeed 6h ago
It’s getting a protected bike lane, wtf are people mad about?
This is fake outrage. In no way do most people support turning Forest Lawn into traffic hell. It wasn’t just the cemetery that didn’t want it, the residents didn’t either.
11
u/TravelinStyle 6h ago
It's a road safety project not just bike lanes. People keep dying on that road because it's built like a freeway. Someone died there just a few months ago after Bass delayed it.
1
u/YasielPuigsWeed 6h ago
There have been 4 deaths on that road in the last 13 years, with tens of thousands of people taking the road every day. This is a commonly used, critical traffic artery.
Add speed cameras to it and call it a day. I’m fine with measures to reduce speeding there but people still gotta go to work.
6
u/TravelinStyle 5h ago
LADOT did a traffic study, the determined the road is over built for the volume of traffic and the rush hour average delay would be 23 seconds. And being ok with 4 deaths to save some seconds per day is a wild take. Speed cameras are a limited pilot program in California, you can't install them every where, LA city is already maxed on where they can put them.
-1
u/DayleD 5h ago
Maxed because of a state law? The terms of the pilot?
2
u/TravelinStyle 5h ago
Yea Los Angeles is limited to 125 cameras. It's a pilot that goes to 2032. To have more the state would have to pass a new bill to allow.
4
u/Significant_Chip3775 5h ago
“It’s a critical traffic artery”
No, it’s actually not. It literally runs next to and parallel to a major freeway and is easily bypassed. It’s a traffic cut through - calling it a critical artery is a real stretch.
1
u/Significant_Chip3775 5h ago
Which residents? There aren’t homes along forest Lawn Dr. What’s your source for this claim?
1
u/YasielPuigsWeed 5h ago
The Oakwood Apartments for one
1
u/Significant_Chip3775 5h ago edited 4h ago
That’s one apartment building lol. On Barham. And the source for your claim that residents oppose the proposed changes?
1
u/YasielPuigsWeed 5h ago
Oakwood is a gigantic complex with anywhere from 600-1000 residents at any given time
There’s lots of people living in LA city limits within a few minutes of there
1
u/Significant_Chip3775 4h ago edited 4h ago
So again, one complex, on Barham. And I ask again, what is the source for your claim that residents oppose these proposed street safety improvements?
I’m going to assume from your refusal to cite a source that you have no source and you admit that you made that claim up. I looked and couldn’t find any evidence to back your claim.
What I did find however is that over 60% of voters in CD4 voted in support of HLA in 2024, which was a mandate for implementing LA’s existing mobility plan.

I have to disagree. I think they did a good job bashing both candidates. It's the candidates responsibility to expose and emphasize their rivals flaws.
That said, I'm leaning towards Raman. We need a change. Somebody with fresh ideas and expects to strive to do more when the system fails. I see Raman as imperfect, but willing to take accountability instead of pointing fingers.
35
u/sourpaloma 7h ago
Why are they attacking Nithya and not coming after Karen Bass at all
19
u/sourpaloma 6h ago
Once again! They bring up affordable housing and ULA, and blame Nithya for ULA while saying nothing about Karen Bass. What about Karen Bass changing ED1 to exempt single family neighborhoods?
11
u/yeahnototallycool 6h ago
And god forbid a politician admit they want to update law when they realize the results from the law they initially support didn't yield the intended results. I hate when someone is willing to evolve their thinking!!!

They were so desperate to make it a gotcha moment, and it’s just not. Karen Bass is a mayor for the rich and the rich only.

Bass was dishonest when she said the homeless funding was cut. What she is referring to is the state refusing to allocate more dollars until each mayor was able to create a better plan. I'm going to look for dates because I'm 99% she was in office when this happened.
15
u/PiscesStudio 7h ago
So the freeze began a few weeks before she took office BUT the pushback from big city mayors began shortly after she was mayor so she articulated that poorly. She should have said funds were frozen due to poor planning and a projection of 2% success.
- The Initial Freeze: Demanding "More Ambitious" Plans
In November 2022, Gov. Newsom made headlines by temporarily freezing $1 billion in state homelessness grants under the Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention (HHAP) program. [1, 2]
- The Reason: He rejected every local application, stating that collective city and county plans would only reduce street homelessness by 2% statewide over four years. Newsom called the low targets "unacceptable". [1, 2, 3]
- The Outcome: After intense pushback from big-city mayors—who argued the delay crippled local shelter operations—Newsom held an "intervention" meeting in Sacramento. He agreed to release the frozen funds only to local jurisdictions that revised their proposals with much higher reduction targets and more aggressive housing strategies

u/wasneveralawyer Whatever the weather, we'll get through it together. 7h ago edited 7h ago
You’re also being disingenuous. The state had a worse economic outlook and did do budget cuts. It hit interim housing the hardest. This is also a reality Nithya will face if she becomes mayor. That there isn’t as much funding from the state and the federal government
3
u/PiscesStudio 6h ago
Oh, I know! I wasn't attempting to be disingenuous. I mentioned it because she said funding was cut when she mentioned Inside Safe which started in 12/22. Funds were not cut, they were frozen because the plans the mayors presented were not strong enough. I do know funds have been cut. Please pardon me for presenting information in a confusing manner.

u/BretFarve 6h ago
Is there any chance Bass wins?
22
u/FedeFofo Sherman Oaks 6h ago
Yes, definitely. Raman has been doing well in most polls but Bass's base (older, homeowners) are much more reliable voters than Raman's.
13
u/BendableBender 5h ago
Raman is a great policy wonk, but she needs to be more offensive and punchy. Abdul El Sayed is a great example of this; part of being a good candidate on the campaign trail is being good at trolling and teasing your opponent.
4
3
u/jeanpaulfartre 4h ago
Or, you could say, part of being a good politician is having charisma. Certainly helps when it comes to winning elections, at least. Bass and Raman are both duds on that front.

Not a fan of Bass but I know from union leaders Nithya has made promises about council votes and didn’t follow through. Multiple times.

u/Virtblue 6h ago
That can also be read as the unions told her to do something and she did not do it. Also fuck the FD union.
6
u/Yardbird52 6h ago
How so? If she agreed to vote in the interest of unions and then didn’t show up to the vote
1

Who said she agreed is what i'm questioning. One has a vested intrest to lie if somone is voting agaisnt you anyway.

•
u/Yardbird52 10m ago
I’m a union member and I know other people in unions. We talk. Notice how many unions didn’t endorse any candidate for the primaries. Also there are a lot of unions who have still not endorsed either candidate. This late in a race that is crazy. IBEW, teamster, I don’t think ILWU has endorsed anyone.

Let me check out this debate, but seeing Raman in stuff like that Higher Learning interview she did a couple weeks ago, she really isn’t good at getting her general points across. She’s not ready for the big leagues yet.
2
u/The_Pandalorian Culver City 4h ago
Yeah I didn't see that interview but your impression tracks with what I saw at tonight's debate.
I mean, she wasn't a trainwreck. Just... Not that good.
2
u/Professional_Edge476 4h ago
Duly noted then. For context, the bit I took umbrage with in her Higher Learning interview was how she initially endorsed Bass, but then said she was waiting for someone like Rick Caruso to run against Bass again, but when no one else was throwing their hat in the ring, she threw hers in right before the deadline. What else does she say she supports but secretly doesn’t? There’s also an awkward segment in there when Van Lathan asked her to name her Top 5 LA rappers, where she just listed Nipsey Hussle, 2Pac (who’s not from LA) and Snoop Dogg.
Basically when she’s asked to stray away from rehearsed media trained talking points, it doesn’t go well for her IMO.

Unless this debate moves the polling 5+ points in Bass’s direction, Nithya Raman is going to be the next mayor of Los Angeles.
Remember that the even the California Governor’s debates didn’t move polling enough. Tom Steyer crushed in the main ones.

Did anyone else catch Nithya shoutout Daryl Gates (Former Police Chief) calling him the gold standard? As someone who has been in this city long enough to remember Daryl Gates (which Nithya hasn’t) she needs to immediately retract that sentiment. Daryl Gates instituted a mass surveillance program that infiltrated leftist groups in the 80s and 90s. He also started the Crash Squad (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums) which perpetrated the war on drugs and led to the Rampart Division scandal. Know your history folks. Did she also start off by quoting Ronald Regan? What are we doing here?

I dont understand how people can defend Raman being a part of a homeless initiative that took 65 million dollars. And houses only 3 families how is she gonna be the one to solve our issues. When she knows people and probably socializes with the people that cause our problems to never change.
5
u/gringo-tacos South Pasadena 4h ago
Here is the problem. She cannot frame herself as an outsider, while she was a council member.
Like how she wants to fire the LAPD even though she confirmed his appointment. She complains about homeless mismanagement, but she also approved the motions to support LAHSA.
She endorsed Bass weeks before her own running.

They agreed strongly with each other on the San Francisco question. They were asked why can’t we just do what San Francisco is doing. Treatment or jail. It’s working.
