Announcement Want to start a PWC rental business? Start here!

With the influx of rental business related posts, we've decided to create a sticky highlighting a majority of questions asked and the answers to them.

There's been a range of good and bad advice that has been given in the various posts, so I'm going to limit this sticky to the good answers only. Our goal is to reduce the amount of "failed" business attempts and to give potential business owners the best chance of success.

"I want to start a rental business, where do I start"

Unfortunately, if you have to ask that question you're already off to a bad start. You're going to need to consider the basics below.

  1. Location and competition - (If you're looking to start a business in an area with a flooded market, don't even bother. You'll also need private land and cannot rely on public launches and public beaches.
  2. Staffing - This is not something you can do on your own. You're going to need the following.
    • Full time mechanic
    • Guide/ski retriever in case someone breaks down
    • Office personnel (training if your locality requires it), taking in customers, administrative paperwork, etc
  3. Machines - You're going to need at least 5-10 machines to break even, plus another for the guide/retrieval operator. These will experience significant wear and abuse so plan on replacing them every year or two. Also pay attention to the laws in your area, some may require a "rental mode" which limits the horsepower to ~99hp.
  4. Insurance - This is often the largest expense. You'll need full liability commercial insurance. This can range from $500/machine/term to several thousands of dollars. It all depends on your area. You may not even be able to secure commercial liability insurance without a few years of owning an LLC under your belt. Nobody here will be able to give you an estimate so you'll need to reach out to a commercial insurance vendor in your area and give them all the details they need (vehicles HIN's, business operating hours, business location, how long you've been in business, etc, etc, etc)
  5. Fuel - Assume you're going to burn ~20 gallons per hour per machine, with 5 machines that comes to 100 gallons per hour combined and around 700 gallons on a 7 hour operating timeframe. You will without a doubt need onsite fuel and lots of it. You cannot rely on 5 gallon jugs or back and forth trips to the gas station.
  6. Repairs and Maintenance - Assuming your machines will be operating 7-8 hours per day for 5 days a week, you'll need to do oil changes twice per month on each machine. You're also going to need to have plenty of parts on hand. Jet pump assemblies, wear rings, impellers, plastic body panels, etc. You'll be renting to people that have most likely never ridden a PWC let alone a boat, so you'll be dealing with a lot of damage. Also, don't forget all of the specialty tools you're going to need! A simple diagnostic interface and cable can run you $2,000 alone!

"I just bought a ski and want to rent it out to cover the cost"

This comes up often. Put it this way, assuming you bought the most expensive ski with $0 down and the highest interest rates the planet has ever seen, it won't even come close to the operating cost of renting the ski out. Anybody that has done this and said they made a profit is doing so illegally and without insurance. If someone is injured on a ski you're renting out without commercial liability insurance, they can (and will) sue you into the ground.

This sticky is not meant to deter people from starting a PWC rental business, there are plenty of great opportunities out there. This post is specifically meant to make sure you know what you're getting into and to keep you from getting yourself into trouble. If you have any questions, or had a rental business success story, post it below!

Technical Issue Help would be most appreciated - wave runner problems.

Me and my dad have identical jet skis. 2005 yamaha vx 110

We got them 2 years ago at 70 hours each. They are at around 130 hours now each they have been great. And work super good. but they have lately began to do some really weird and annoying things. I am asking for help in diagnosis.

important information.

they work fine and go fast ( 57 mph )and all features normal once we get them running ... But lately they have been taking forever to start. .. I am talking. pushing the green button. 15-30 times... And trying to follow the manual on how to safely start it in water. All that.

Both of them are taking forever to start.. we even went and bought a battery powered battery helping booster thing with cables that connects to the battery it's an external mobile helper. It definitely helps a little bit... But even so the problem is not getting fixed it just helps them start faster gives the battery more juice I guess... At first cranks?

But it's struggling a lot. We recently changed the gas because we were using normal 87 and we've changed it to 91 or something. And we already have drained them of the old gas as well.. before we changed it so that it would take new gas. The problem has not gone away.

Only once we get these things started which is typically every single time thankfully. But only after we do and ride them for say an hour or two and have a blast. Do things go back to normal.

After we have rode them for an hour or so and had our fun we turn them off to park them at the doc to load them back up and once I turn them back on after I go and get the ski it starts back up IMMEDIATELY with no problem.

We throw our hands up so confused. They straight up would go 57 mph at that point.. just literally from that start give it some throttle boom. As if there was never any annoying problem of 15 minutes at the beginning...

And the temperature outside is about 80-90 degrees farenheit.

Can someone please help me figure out what's going on with these things? Me and my dad would like to avoid the mechanic route at least for a little bit longer maybe this could be fixed with buying parts ourselves.

Any help would be appreciated.

Question WaveBlaster allocation experiences?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Talked to a dealer about about allocating a WaveBlaster, originally told me it’s a typical $500 deposit then when I was ready to sign up their manager changed it to $1000 non refundable claiming my ski order will pull from the amount of Yamahas they are allowed to order and it’s to ensure I’m serious.

This isn’t a huge deal but obviously it’s 2026 I could be wrong but it doesn’t seem like anyone has gotten one yet, they have not ETA and no confirmation when they will get one. They did say in the circumstance the production is limited and they don’t receive one I will get a refund just not if I change my mind.

Let me know your opinions or experience if you’ve tried to allocate yet.

Flag mount for jetski

Fabbed up a flag mount for my older ski. Trying to see what people think. Is the fiberglass going to have problems with the extra pulling? Anyone else seeing potential problems with this setup? Overall I’m just not sure if it will handle the forces it’s going to come across. Tried to use ai to give me a better idea of the forces at play. Didn’t give me a clear picture. The mount is attached using two studs I welded to it. Any feedback would be great, except for saying that my welds are shit.

Jet ski rental procedures?

I recently rented a jet ski in Florida and could use some advice from people who know more about this stuff than I do. We paid for a two hour guided tour with about a dozen other riders, all beginners, including some children.

When we returned it, we were charged $150 for a 1½ inch scuff on the black rubber trim around the edge of the ski. The staff had made a point of telling us how brand new the machines were, so I wasn't sure if that had something to do with the price.

I don't know what this stuff normally costs. But their quoted rate of $100 an inch seemed pretty crazy to me. On top of that, we weren't provided with a proper estimate or invoice for the repair, and we were told the watercraft would be out of service for days while the repairs were made, costing the company even more in lost rental income.

Fwiw another party on our tour was also charged for damage. Looking through the company’s Google reviews afterward, it seems like this may be a common trend. Is this type of charge actually reasonable at $100/inch of rubber trim, or does it sound excessive?

1996 seadoos gsx

Hey guys ive just brought a project ski. Its a 96 gsx that doesnt start.

The starter solenoid has been replaced and clicks when the button is engaged but thats all it will do.

The guy I brought it off said it does spin over by hand and had bench tested the starter and that worked also.

But I have tried to directly jump the starter and nothing happened. Anyone have advise on what to try or do ?

My next step was pull the starter out myself and inspect it, ill probably just end up replacing it. Cheers

Question Water inside Hull

Post image
6 Upvotes

Is this a normal amount of water inside after riding around a bit?

There’s no holes in the hull and I was t doing anything to get water inside. The only thing I can think of where it may be coming from is I changed the exhaust pipe to the Riva free flow pipe and the Riva ride plate. But I doubt it would be the plate being the issue.

Question Jet Ski Cleaning

I noticed some white mineral spots built up all over my jet ski after riding around the lake this past weekend. I’m curious to know what everyone here recommends for both cleaning their ski and preventing mineral spots from building up on their ski.

Gas Cap Removal ‘95 waveraider 700

Thumbnail gallery

Has anybody removed the gas cap on a 1995 Yamaha waveraider 700? I’m trying to remove the front trim piece and in order to do so, I need to remove the gas cap assembly. However I’ve run into a hose band on the gas tank fill hose that is almost impossible to reach. I highlighted the band on the diagram. I’m fairly certain this is what is preventing me from removing the gas cap assembly. Thanks.

Technical Issue 2017 Kawasaki Ultra LX 1500 – Engine Surging, No Throttle Response, CAA1 Code

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,
About two weeks ago, I replaced the steering column on my 2017 Kawasaki Ultra LX 1500 and installed a brand-new battery.
After putting everything back together, I started the Jet Ski, and the engine immediately began revving up and down on its own without me touching the throttle.
The throttle also doesn’t respond when I squeeze it, and I’m getting a CAA1 error code along with the FI warning light on the dashboard.
The Jet Ski was running fine before I replaced the steering column and battery, so I’m wondering if I accidentally disconnected or damaged something during the installation.
Has anyone experienced this issue before? Could it be a throttle cable problem, a sensor, or an electrical connection?
Any advice on what I should check first would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Waverunner Spark Plugs Help

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello friends! I was just changing the oil and winterizing my 18 Waverunner VX Limited when I noticed my spark plugs were rusted and I’ve never seen that before. Was also a bit lower on oil when draining than typical. Fresh water only. Only rode her a few times this years.

P.S. I spray a little fogging oil in the cylinders every year before storage and replace the spark plugs after storage before first ride.

Thanks for the help!

Winch is 2 years old, dropped the ski onto the launch while pulling out. Thread on both loops ripped right out, I had inspected it before leaving in the morning and it looked fine.

I was out on a jet ski when it suddenly died completely. I tried to start it, but it showed no signs of life. I pulled the spark plugs to check them and found there was no spark - what could the problem be?

Stand up riders, what do you do with your stuff while riding?

Curious what everyone does with their phone, keys, wallet, etc. when they're out riding stand ups.

Do you leave everything on shore, use a dry bag, or have some kind of storage setup on your ski?

I've always wondered what everyone else does, especially on longer lake days.

Question What do you guys think about this bundle deal?

What would you pay? These are 96’s not 98’s.

How hard to get these in working order? Both engines turn over btw.

Are they worth parting out and selling trailer if they’re bought cheap enough?
