State of the Subreddit & Seeking Volunteers For Wiki Creation

  1. What's up team I totally forgot I added "user flair" to the subreddit months ago- lemme know if y'all have any suggestions but I feel like I came up with alright ideas

  2. I have enabled an auto mod for all "How do I dye this" posts, it reads as follows:

Our wiki is currently under construction however: there's a good chance your question has been answered in a previous post. If you are dyeing cellulose fibres (cotton, hemp, linen, ramie, flax, nettle, rayon, bamboo, tencel, plants generally, etc.), you will need a fiber reactive dye.

If you are dyeing a protein fiber (wool, alpaca, llama, Angora, mohair, feathers, animal stuff generally, etc.), you will need an acid dye.

Leather is dyed with leather specific dyes such as those from Angelus.

Silk will dye with either acid or fiber reactive dyes but will yield different results depending on which you use.

Polyester can sometimes be dyed. It can only be dyed with synthetic specific dyes such as iDye Poly or RIT Dyemore. It usually cannot achieve a dark or rich colour at home. Acrylic usually cannot be dyed at all.

  1. I've had "post guidance" enabled: reddit seems to have changed what can and cannot be done via auto mod. So I can't auto delete posts that mention specific topics, however I've had these pop up messages for common topics that give basic advice/wisdom before users posts.

  2. Piggybacking off that, I can't set a limit manually to filter low karma users or new accounts but I have turned on Reddits "crowd control" and "reputation" filters

  3. Previously, people have offered to help write our wiki. Would people still be interested in doing that?

Please post all Halloween and Costume Related Posts here from 9/25-11/1

Please post fiber content, inspo picture, and what you’re trying to dye. Without fiber content we don’t know what dyes work. Without an inspo picture we don’t know what you’re talking about. Without a picture of what you’re trying to dye we can’t give realistic expectations.

How do I dye this? Alter the hue of an existing piece

Post image
1 Upvotes

hi! so i have this kneepad in the top colour which is a little bright and too orangey for my skin tone. i wanna alter it to look somewhat like the bottom which is a more natural nude for my skin tone. i'm planning to get indigo synthetic dye and dilute it A LOT and dunk these bad boys in. is this a good idea?

the main body of the kneepad and the strap are neoprene fabric, the inside is cotton towel fabric (don't really care about the inside)

How do I dye this? I knit this sweater and don't like the color. Would this composition be good to dye without shrinking?

Post image

I used Knit Picks Aloft in Oat (72% Mohair & 28% Silk) and Palette in Oyster Heather (pure wool - not superwash). It's a bit to close to my skin tone to wear regularly. I'm thinking a rose pink color. Is there a type of dye or process you suggest to make sure it doesn't shrink? I like the fit.

How do I dye this? I'm dyeing some clothes by staining them with coffee grounds. How long should I keep them in the vat for?

It's been a minute since I've dyed and I've only done this coffee method once years ago. Does anybody know how long I should keep it in for to get a nice, mid-tone color (think caramel)

For context, I'm dying a piece of shapewear that's this light tone (kinda like this) and I put about 5-6 spoonfuls of coffee ground into a mesh bag. I'm boiling it in a steel stockpot on my stove and I put in Cascade and salt to make the color stay. It's been dyeing for about 44 minutes now and it's still just a little darker, but not the color I want.

I'll keep checking it intermittently, but how long should I keep it in for? Should I add something else?

Knitter aficionados PLEASE DONT flame me for the felting I brought forth on this sweater… it was an unavoidable casualty of an even dye job.
Anyways, I had another crack at dying my discoloured grey-yellow, turned punch-you-in-the face-green sweater, and I’m happy with the results!! I used 1 bottle of royal blue, and about 1/3-1/2 bottle of wine red RIT dye, which made a lovely indigo. Colour theory FTW.

How do I dye this? Want to make this green please help!

Basically have a wedding next week, dress finally came but not as the colour advertised. What is the best way to go about dying this green if I can? I know over grey it will be muted but I'm okay with that, prefer an earthy muted colour anyways!

I've included a photo with the tag on what the fabric composition is.

Thank you🙏

How do I dye this? Can I dye my ‘dry clean only‘, wool-poly-mix cloak dark blue? What results can I expect?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I have this cloak from my early reenactment days, that I would love to dye but I am very scared to mess it up, since it’s dry clean only.

Composition:
75,10% wool
12,95% polyester
6,93% nylon
3,37% cotton
1,65% viscose

My original plan (before I found what it is made off) was to dye it in a pattern of different blue and teal hues.

I would absolutely settle for a midnight blue, though.

From my quick online search I figure I will only be able to dye the wool parts (and possibly cotton), correct?
If so, what kind of results can I expect?
I would not mind a dark blue with brown melange-type look.

Especially thankful for any tips on what dye to use, that is available in Germany/Europe.

General question Wool dyeing in EU

Hello everyone, I have a question for people from europe, where did you buy yarn for dyeing? I never dyed yarn before, and local shops is soooo expensive. Im afraid to buy expensive yarn and end up with all shades of brown merino 😆 Im living in Germany. Plan to use acidic dye.

Inspiration Duochrome? Denim color suggestions

I saw this trench coat on Desigual, and I am obsessed with the blue to red color shift happening here.

Does anyone have any ideas how I could do this at home? My first guess is to play around with airbrushing that's sprayed over a dark denim (cotton) from a horizontal direction (like an overspray?) so that it would catch the fibers at an angle, but i have never tried something like that, so I have no idea if that is a reasonable starting point. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

How do I dye this shirt pale butter yellow? It’s 95% polyester and 5% elastane. I’m afraid I will mess up the stretch or shape bc of the heat. As well as what brand of dye should i get?

How do I dye this? Dye or bleach first?

Note: 100% cotton. I don’t need the bleach spot to necessarily be completely undetectable since it’s in kind of a hidden place anyways, just looking to make it less noticeable.

How do I dye this? wedding guest help!!

Hi, so I am attending a wedding in two weeks and recently realised the intended dress I was going to wear is far too big. The only dress I have that fits is an old prom dress, and because of the deep red colour I don't know if it’s acceptable to wear to a wedding. My family is not traditional, but I would hate to wear something with bad omens attached. Realistically I would like to dye this to a deeper purple maybe, and would like advice on how to/ if it's possible to dye. The theme is best dressed, and if people think that it's fine as is then I will leave it.

How do I dye this? Pastel pink -> pastel purple

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi! I just got a really cute pastel pink dress and I’m wanting to dye it a light purple. I was just wondering if I should use color theory and use a light blue dye or use a purple and just use less and leave the dress in for less time? It’s a polyester blend if that affects anything! This is my first time dying something that isn’t white so any tips would be nice!

How do I dye this? Changing color of cotton shirt

Hey. Thrift store shirt. Good fit, heavy weight, 100% cotton. The red is a bit intense and hard to match. Would like a softer orange, but nothing super definite in mind. I have bleach, peroxide, some RIT dyes on hand. Current plan was to soak in dilute bleach, stop with h2o2, maybe re-dye with that coral RIT… but this is a total experiment and I have no experience here. Suggestions? Thoughts?
