Lore ”Scary” animal scenes that becomes less scary the more you actually know of animals

Thumbnail

11.1k Upvotes

In Dr No James Bond’s enemies tries to kill him by releasing a spider into his room. That spider is a Tarantula one of the more calmer Spiders species whose bite is not much worse than a bee sting. Also spiders in general don’t deliberately bite humans. I find this example particularly unintentionally funny because if you have no knowledge of spiders this scene is a scary assassin attempt but if you do it comes across more like Bond’s enemies were pranking him.

In the movie “Holes” supposedly dangerous “yellow spotted” lizards are played by bearded dragons that IRL are non-venomous and unable to seriously harm humans with their bite and are know to be pretty calm and docile.

In Raiders of the Lost Ark with the ironic exception of the cobra used in this shot most of the supposed dangerous snakes in this scene are either non-venomous snakes or legless lizards.

Wreck-It Ralph: King Candy tries to escape Ralph's wrath with the very old-fashioned gag, "You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses, would you?" Sure enough, Ralph does just that: grabs the glasses off Candy's face and whacks him with them. (Edited for clarity)

Looney Tunes: In 'Duck Dodgers in the 24th 1/2 Century", Daffy attempts to zap Marvin the Martian with his ACME-branded disintegrating pistol. He pulls the trigger, and: "Huh, well whadda ya know? It... disintegrated."

K-Pop Demon Hunters: Though never explicitly addressed, the film's title can be interpreted three different ways. HUNTR/X are K-pop stars who hunt demons; their nemeses are a boy band comprised of demons, making HUNTR/X hunters of K-pop demons; and Rumi herself is a half-demon, making her a K-pop demon who hunts.

Arcane: Jinx exploits the trope for a wicked bit of black comedy. She taunts her estranged sister Vi by saying that she paid Vi's crush, Caitlyn', a visit and "made her a snack". She then brings out a cloche that could just about fit a human head on a platter beneath... and opens it to reveal nothing more than a cupcake. "Sheesh, I'm not that crazy~"

Characters The fake liberal with no values

Thumbnail
gallery
6.0k Upvotes

Trope of someone who always stands on a soap box and have strong values who always talks down to someone who does share those values turns out to be a massive hypocrite and sell out for when it matters.

Brian - family guy.

I can do a hundred examples of this with him alone but to keep it simple, Brian is a struggling writer who thinks everything he writes is gold the one time however he writes a genuinely good book it gets turned Into a script for a tv show.

The story evolves around a father going back to college with his own teenage daughter cause he had to drop out to raise her, it tells the story of the struggle between the 2 as he is restarting his life as a middle age man and she is trying to find herself and be independent but has to also face the fact her classmate is her father. It’s an emotional story with highs and lows.
However James woods gets involved and pitches the story to instead be a comedy sitcom. Brain is against it but the producers push him to do it saying it will make more money. He reluctantly agrees and goes along more and more with the changes even when they add a monkey sidekick.

On the night it premiers the family and neighbours come to watch the pilot expecting to watch this emotional drama but when it opens with a cringey sitcom theme song everyone slowly turns to look at him with disappointment.

Later Lois confronts him and brain argues that as bad as it was at least it got made and if he didn’t agree to the changes his story would never have been produced to which Lois says that then it wouldn’t be produced and he gets to walk away proud that he stood up for his values instead of caving in and letting them ruin his work just so he can make a profit.

Britta - community

Britta is the typical buzzkill member of the group who always tries to make a big deal over any injustice she sees but it’s clear that she’s doing it for the sake of doing it and doesn’t really care or know what she’s talking about.

There was one instance where they are talking about race and she was making a big deal about it then they brought up animal cruelty to which she says “ I can excuse racism but won’t excuse animal cruelty “ to which Shirley replies “ you can excuse racism “

It’s clear she wasn’t thinking about what she was saying and just wanted to make a stand against whatever the controversial topic was at the moment.

Injue Joe (Looney Tunes)- in this episode how America came to be, 90% of the country belonged to this mf. He broke trees with his chest, scared off bears with his roar, sended bear traps running and crying with his bite, passed rivers like a hippo, shot tree sized arrows casually and eated bullet to form canon balls that he shooted out of his mouth.

Snowflame (DC comics): Snowflame is a villain that gains more power the more he takes cocaine. He can control white flames, have super strenght, super resistance, ability to makes others feel drugged aswell and endless stamina. He should be a PTA about drugs being bad, but the writers forgot the most important things when making a anti-drug characters, THEY FORGOT TO GIVE HIM CONSEQUENCES FOR USING HIS POWER. Mf is able to duke it out with a entire hero team at the price of nothing.

Characters Characters who got their name changed cause the writers forgot

Thumbnail

Felonious Gru was changed to simply Gru in despicable me 3, everyone forgot that Gru was a last name and named his twin Dru. That means that he changed his name or that his brother is Dru Gru, but that wouldn't make sense since even Dru call him Gru.

Shu, the henchmen of Pilaf, was firstly named Soba in the manga. But Toriyama forgot about his name and everyone forgot about his name and no one wanted to take the fucking manga and read to see if he had a name so they renamed the dog as Shu and the manga changed his name in later versions.

Rigby is in a weird place, his birth name is rigbone but was legally changed to rigby afrer trash boat. So, sometimes the error is that you can see documents calling him rigby before the change in brief moments. (Regular show)

In "the name", we learn that Gumball was just a nickname and his real name is Zac. Something that contradict with his full name shown in season 1 as "Gumball Trisha Watterson". After the end of the episode he changes his name to Gumball.

In a more local example, the dub for latin america of Yu-Gi-Oh had a weird time with summoned skull. Calling him "el esqueleto luchador", "la calavera del averno", " La calavera", "convoca al craneo" And finally "craneo convocado", the actual translation of the card.

Lore Character's "weakness" is just something they aren't immune to.

Thumbnail
gallery
5.0k Upvotes

On one hand, you have weaknesses like "Kryptonite" or an "Achilles' heel." Where the character is more vulnerable to this particular weakness than is normal. Superman can stand in a nuclear reactor unharmed, but a little bit of Kryptonite radiation makes him keel over.
On the other hand, you have weaknesses where a character is not more weak to something. They just don't have an inherent invulnerability to it. It's a hole in their armor, not something that makes their armor melt off their body and cook them alive.

1). Superman:
Due to his Kryptonian physiology, Superman is explicitly weak to red sunlight and kryptonite radiation. Levels that would be harmless to a comparatively fragile human are debilitating for Clark. But Clark is also weak to magic. Not because Kryptonians are particularly susceptible to it compared to other aliens in the DC universe. He just isn't anymore immune to it than everyone else. Even though he has god-like powers, in DC's mythology, he is still (metaphysically) mortal. So, if you hit Superman with a spell that turns him into a rabbit, it'll work on him just as well as Batman.
This contrasts to characters like Captain Marvel/Shazam. Who ALSO have explicit defenses against any magical attacks.

2). One Piece:
Luffy's rubber body makes him immune to blunt-force attacks. Bullets are useless and lightning passes by him harmlessly. And as someone who ate a devil fruit, he has a supernatural weakness to the ocean and "sea prism stone." Haki can also be used to negate the defense his rubber-flesh gives him. But his other major weakness is cutting and piercing attacks. Not because being rubber makes him weak to it, but because you can still cut through rubber with something sharp.

3). The Legend of Korra:
For most of history, Earthbenders were neutralized with wooden or metal prisons. Metal "purifies" Earth, leaving too little left behind to properly control. Toph Beifong perfected a technique that allowed her to identify and manipulate the trace amounts of earthen impurities left in metal. Inventing "metalbending" in the process. Once knowledge of metalbending became widespread, it became a lot harder to imprison talented earthbenders. Ghazan, a lavabender, had to be kept on a floating prison made of wood with absolutely no earthen materials whatsoever. But you can't build an industrial machine out of wood.
Enter platinum. I'm pretty sure real-world platinum is prohibitively rare, too soft for metalworking, and not actually "purer" than other metals. But in the world of Avatar, it is described as too pure for metalbenders to control. But it's not like earthbenders are allergic to it. A robot made of platinum is just as dangerous to them as normal metal is to everyone else. They just don't (also) have the ability to fling it into the air.

Characters [Loved Trope] Autistic characters that aren’t geniuses or pure.

5.0k Upvotes
  1. Max Horowitz (Mary and Max): Explicitly diagnosed with Autism, Max is prone to panic attacks when something unexpected happens, has an extremely limited diet, and has a special interest in the movie’s version of The Smurfs. He also states that he doesn’t want to be “cured” of his Autism, and becomes furious when Mary attempts to find a cure. Max also defies the usual physical appearance of autistic characters in media (young, conventionally attractive, usually depicted as a Christian or an Atheist) as he is an obese Jewish man in his mid 40s.

  2. Napoleon Dynamite (Napoleon Dynamite): While not explicitly confirmed by the creators, many fans believe that Napoleon falls somewhere on the Autism spectrum due to his actions and behavior (extremely poor social skills, limited emotional expression, his stilted speaking style, and his special interest in Ligers and drawing). The closest he ever comes to being a genius is winning an FFA award after successfully identifying what caused some jars of cow milk to taste off, and overall he’s a socially awkward 16 year old with limited interests and a limited ability to express his emotions.

Deb, Dexter: New Blood - Dexter's sister/love interest for a season (shit got weird), Deb, played by Jennifer Carpenter, died in the series finale of Dexter in 2013 but throughout Dexter: New Blood, Dexter hallucinates a ghost version of her.

Kutner, House MD - Kutner, played by Karl Penn, commits suicide in the season 5 episode "Simple Explanation" in 2009 because the actor got hired to work at the actual white house (yes, really). In the series finale in 2012, Kutner appears to House as a drug induced hallucination but Penn gained a bit of weight.

"Our son" (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) -- While it's revealed by this point that Kylo Ren is Han and Leia's son, the dialogue has them refer to him as "our son" until it's time for Han to call his name to him: "Ben!"

"The Order" (Assassin's Creed 3) -- The opening act of the game is not as the lead assassin, Ratonhnhaké:ton, but his father, Haytham Kenway. This section follows him working alongside Charles Lee educating him to be initiated into the order; the TEMPLAR order.

"Get your ticket" (The Long Walk) -- In the film, the walk is an endurance race where anyone who fails to maintain a minimum speed of 3 miles per hour gets their ticket and is eliminated, and the winner is the last walker remaining. What's conspicuously absent from all dialogue, despite all of the characters knowing, is what "getting your ticket" actually means -- until the first contestant to lose pace gets shot in the head.

-No good nick

Nick shows up to a families household claiming to be a distant relative and for most of episode one dynamics are established between her and the family. However at the end we discover that in reality her father is in prison and she is conning the family in order to make money in order to keep her dad from getting beat. Not even being a real member of the family.

-Invincible

The majority of episode one is focused on Mark. Showing his life before and after his powers along with showing the world itself and how super heroes exist and operate. At the end we get the reveal that Omniman, Marks father and what was previously believed to be earths greatest hero, is against the heroes and ends up killing the biggest threat, the guardians of the globe.

-Green Lantern

While episode one is mostly meant to establish the Red Lanterns as a threat to the Green Lanterns it's confirmed by both Atrocitus and the Guardians themselves though that the Red Lanterns in reality are against the Green Lanterns alone, not because of some dumb vendetta but because the Guardians were responsible for the genocide of the home worlds for most of the Red Lanterns.

Characters The parody that did a better job than the thing they were parodying

Thumbnail
gallery
1.7k Upvotes

Subjective but when someone makes a parody but it ends up fixing plot holes the original story had either by making fun of the plot holes or coming up with a better solution.

Team four star dragonball abridged,
The abridged series dbza did a lot of things to make sense of illogical moments in the original

Cyborg 17 and 18.
In the original series we meet android 17 and 18 and that’s how they are always known as, androids, the thing is they aren’t androids, they were original human beings who were captured and turned into what they are now. They are cyborgs. A android is a robot that was built to look and act like a human while a cyborg is someone who was once human but had their body parts replaced with robotic parts. They are essentially the polar opposite a cyborg is a human turned machine an android is a machine disguised as a human.
It’s clear the author just didn’t know the difference and went with a cooler sounding word.

In the abridge they just address it as being wrong but choosing not to change it.

2 examples.
Trunks comes back in time and starts explaining things to Goku and when he details 17 and 18 Goku responds “ gasps androids !? “
Trunks “ well actually the technical term is cy “
Goku “ androids”
Trunk “ ….yeah sure “

Later when piccolo meets cell and he starts explaining who he is.
Cell ‘ you see I was created to meet up with my dear brother and sister cyborg 17 and 18 “
Piccolo “ we call them androids “
Cell “ good for you, your wrong “

They joke that the names are wrong but they are just going to stick with it.

Sword art online abridge.
The motive behind the villains plan.

When they beat the villain and watch him let go of the world he created they ask him to just tell them why did he do all this for his response was “

“ you know what after all this time I don’t even remember “
“What! “
“ haha no I’m joking can you imagine “

He then details how he put a lot of money into creating a virtual reality game but kept coming across issues with glitches and then the issue of how people couldn’t log out of the games and when the set is forced off their heads or they die in the game they just die in real life.

Due to deadlines coming close, financial issues and the growing legal and safety concerns plus the fact that he’s been going days without sleeping and drinking nothing but coffee to stay awake. He had a panic attack released the system then barricaded himself inside the game world with thousands of innocent people to avoid being arrested.
He admits it was a bad plan and made no sense and he could have just not released the system and avoided all of this but he wasn’t in the right mindset due to him not sleeping and being off the rails on caffeine.

The joke here being in the original when they do finally confront the villain and ask why he did what he did his genuine answer was that he didn’t remember, the truth being the author clearly didn’t think of what the end goal was going to be when they wrote this fantasy world and couldn’t come up with a solid justification thus just said he simply forgot what his motive was which enraged tons of fans.

The abridge address it better by making it a big internal issue with the company politics fused with bad decision making due to him being out of it. It’s not exactly brilliant thinking for a serious plot but it makes a hell a lot more sense and better than nothing.

1: the seven barreled, rocket shooting, grenade launching, magazine, belt and revolver fed creature of a gun in this strike commando poster (bonus points for the guy trying to play off his negligent discharge in the background).

2: this abomination from a daredevil comic.

3: whatever it is that Chris Redfield is holding while having a stroke in the Resident Evil 1 cover art.

4: The Zip 22, from real life. Although the gun is regarded as terrible and prone to jamming, one thing I don't see mentioned enough is that to cock/unjam the gun you use the mechanism directly above the barrel, risking shooting yourself (if the gun even works enough to shoot, that is).

miscellaneous (Satisfying trope) A good person holds a lasting grudge without softening or seeing good in them.

Thumbnail
gallery
984 Upvotes

Haikyuu: Yutaro Kindaichi had a grudge against Tobio Kageyama in Kitagawa Daichi Middle School due to the latter's bad manners, mocking him as "king of the court" and at one point refusing to hit his sets anymore. Years later, when Kageyama attempts to apologize, he immediately cuts off and says he'll never view him as anything but an enemy. Nobody in the series, not Kunimi, not Iwaizumi, not Oikawa, not Hinata, not even Kageyama himself, calls him immature or petty. Kageyama continues his quiet part of self-improvement, and while Kindaichi does warm up later, it's only because Kageyama himself has changed beyond hateable. Notably, Haikyuu doesn't have a villain, and Kindaichi isn't even a "jerk" character; he's a genuinely sweet and sensitive person who's allowed to hold grudges without him becoming a Shogo Haizaki.

Attack on Titan: during their attempt to stop the Rumbling, Annie Leonhart, one of Marley's Warriors, has a farewell with the Survey Corps. Annie was responsible for attacking Paradis on Marley's behalf and the deaths of several beloved soldiers, and had shown pretty much no remorse due to trauma. While Armin, Hange, Connie, and Mikasa have forgiven her and bid her a warm farewell, Jean Kirstein shows no warmth, still not forgetting Marco Bot's death. This happened after Jean had already ignored Annie once and beaten Reiner senseless in a campfire before. Jean also didn't warm up to Magath, still holding Marley's colonialism responsible for Eren's madness till the very bitter end. Jean is, in the end, still very much an anti-Rumbling hero, not a barbarian like Floch, so "grudge corrupts" doesn't apply to him narratively like it applies to the Yeagerists.

Both of these archetypes stand out from Frankenstein's monster, Dabi, or Sasuke Uchiha, whose grudge narratively hurts others. Both of them also stand out from the Todorokis, who try to see the best in Endeavor while claiming they'd never forgive (Kindaichi does forgive eventually, but Kageyama by then has changed way more than Endeavor ever did).

Scanlan (Vox Machina): When Sam first made his character for the campaign, he had never played DND, and just wanted the funniest option, so he asked for the "lamest" class and race. Mr. Stake (TFS Nuzlocke): Was chosen because he's the "worst" Johto starter, and was even practically named "mistake". He then goes on to live the longest out of any mon, with one highlight being tanking a critical hit ice beam and then immediately killing his attacker.

Rag (World of Io): Rolled absolutely mediocre stats during character creation and is an absolute girlfailure. Despite that, she's one of the only members of the initial party who's still around. In a Hardcore campaign, mind you.

Characters [Bad Weapon Handling Trope] No Trigger Discipline

Thumbnail
gallery
726 Upvotes

Characters who should know their way around guns exhibit no trigger discipline. Sometimes intentional and for comedic effect, sometimes clearly a result of the actor/director not knowing when they should keep their finger off the trigger.

Intentional Examples:

Pulp Fiction (1994) - "Oh man, I shot Marvin in the face!"

The Big Lebowski (1998) - Could be debatable, but Walter is just nuts and was just about ready to light the whole bowling alley up, so the lack of trigger finger awareness just adds to the scene.

Unintentional Examples:

Silent Trigger (1996) PS: this movie is so fucking boring

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
