Characters Showmanship doesn’t equal skill

SpongeBob SquarePants: in a cooking contest, Neptune lights his grill with magic and guides his ingredients through the air before assembling the 1000 burgers in seconds. They all end up tasting like shit compared to SpongeBob

Devil went down to Georgia: the Devil puts on a for more impressive display with flames and demons but Johnny was simply a better fiddler by comparison

Prince of Egypt: Moses vs The High Priests

The Egyptian high priests Hotep and Huy attempt to demonstrate their superiority over the Hebrew God, and therefore Moses, by using smoke, light, darkness and mirrors to pull off a series of illusions and parlor tricks

They then give the impression they transformed two wooden staffs into writhing serpents which then battle Moses' own cobra. But, unseen in the shadows, Moses' cobra devours alive both of the priest's snakes.

I need to rewatch this movie, it might have been 20 yrs ago from my last viewing but I still visualized the epic snake shadow on the wall as I was reading your recap

And it doesn't stop there. The plauges eventually reach a point that the magicians could not replicate them.

Pretty sure Moses just stood in one place that whole fight bro could tell these two were frauds

If that’s the reference picture, the first place winner definitely got it closer than second place lol

I don't think this is a case of showmanship not equaling skill. I think this is a case of skill losing to silly

I think that’s just the Internet being beautiful in it’s predictability.

From a mechanical perspective, this is kind of the case for most multiplayer matches in the strategy game Total War: Warhammer 3. Instead of taking one super cool, flashy unit that also costs a lot, it's usually better to get several cheaper & mundane units that can still be used in a cost-effective manner.

The Total War Youtuber Enticity explained it best in this video. I've never played the Warhammer Tabletop, but players of it said the game(s) have the same situation in the comments.

Freshly Squeezed Orange Cassidy

He'll beat his opponents while expending the least amount of the energy needed to do so, and often with his hands in his pockets, or whatever

GOB fromArrested Development, seen here being a CEO. He’s also not a particularly skilled magician despite his showmanship (it’s the final countdown!)

Snake chastises Ocelot for the engravings on his revolver - Metal Gear Solid 3.

And a faulty an empty one, at that, which results in Eva kicking his ass.

u/Budget-Category-9852 4h ago

Ocelot gets to do the lecture too in MGSV.

12

u/Demomanx 3h ago

Sorry, thought of this with Ocelot repeating what Big Boss told him

8

u/BenienbI 3h ago

The engraved revolver worked just fine. What actually happened was even dumber: Ocelot ran out of bullets without realising because he was so used to his old 8 round Makarov

Shit, I forgot.

While desperately searching for his lost love, Marion Ravenwood, Indiana Jones encounters an intimidating masked swordsman who performs an elaborate, flashy display of his blade-fighting skills, preparing for a duel against Indy's bullwhip before Indiana simply draws his pistol, sighs and casually shoots the guy down with a single shot (Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark)

From what I've heard (so take my words with salt), Indiana's actor was not in the mood so simply took a different route (in this case, using gun).

Dragonball Yamcha Vs Master Roshi (Jackie Chan) Roshi chastised Yamcha for wasting energy on needlessly flashy moves

19

u/Impressive-Card9484 4h ago

Are you really implying that Master  Roshi is Jackie Chun?! Didn't he already say that they are cousins or something?

Samoa Joe walking away (pro wrestling)

Chances are if he's facing someone that's a high-flyer type of wrestler that likes to do flips and leaps off the ropes or top turnbuckle; this spot will come up at some point where the high-flyer will leap at a stunned Joe, only for Joe to walk away with the energy of "c'mon man" to show that Joe doesn't need a counter or that the best counter for this is to simply walk away.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the anime, but there’s a Pokemon episode that features a restaurant where a Weavile and a Mr. Mime are the chefs. The Weavile’s dishes look incredibly bland and basic, but apparently taste amazing. Mr. Mime puts on a big show with psychic and the dishes look very flashy and good, but taste bad
