miscellaneous [Sad Specific IRL Trope] A character made by someone ends up being used by the worst people ever as a meme, thus making you feel bad for the original creator

Chill Guy (My New Character) - Phillip Banks

Chill Guy was used as a meme coin in 2024, resulting in Banks having to copyright the character, but this resulting in him getting doxxed by Crypto-Bros

Silly Cat (Later known as Boykisser) - Mauzymice

Silly Cat was only used for silly gifs, but later on someone else made a caption that would later be known as the Boykisser, what made it worse is that the boykisser gif was later used for predatory purposes. Resulting in Mauzymice to get harrassed off the internet. (wait what do you mean it got worse recently?)

miscellaneous (risky trope) A show changes genres mid way

13.6k Upvotes

The 100: the show starts as a somewhat grounded post apocalypse where humans who have taken refuge in a space station return to earth after it has become inhabitable again and resources on the space station run out. At first the show is about survival in a hostile environment. It slowly introduces more and more sci fi elements. At first, it's an Aİ that wants control over humanity. Towards the end of the show, the main characters have traveled throughout the galaxy, met humans from other planets, some of which have settled among ruins of ancient alien species, where they try to contact more advanced alien species in order to achieve "transcendence": rid humans of their physical bodies and become a more advanced lifeform.

AOT: this one is less gradual than the 100 and the change comes after a massive plot twist. The first 3 seasons of the show are about a relatively primitive society of humans who live inside humongous walls. Outside the walls are titans: giant monstrous creatures which hunt and devour humans. After a big plot twist and reveal, the society finds out that there is a whole bigger world out there, and the rest of the world is plotting to genocide them. They quickly industrialize after this discovery and wage war against other countries.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs - The spray on shoes are an establishing character for moment for Flint, which shows that he's very creative and imaginative with his inventions but not always effective, as he created shoes he can't take off. But if you stop to think about it, he somehow managed to create something that is light, can be sprayed on, is indestructible and grew with his feet at just 8 years old. Flint really was a misunderstood genius

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends - Imaginary friends come to life simply by being imagined by a kid. Here's the thing, kids imaginations are wild and they can also be pretty scared. Who knows what kind of horrifying thing a child might imagine by being scared of the dark or in a nightmare

Cars - Quite a few things. One of them being the fact that in the second movie they are shown taking off their tires in the airport, which leads us to believe that 9/11 has happened in this universe. The thing is, planes are also living beings, so how were they hijacked?

There's also that one car that has an inside with seats and a steering wheel

1) Hoopy the Hoop, Portal (2007) When you defeat GLaDOS and her room is destroyed at the end of the game, debris rains down in the final cutscene, including a big metal hoop that bounces around a bit. Developer Erik Wolpaw said the team dubbed it "Hoopy the Hoop" and expected it to become the big meme of Portal. Of course, none of the fans paid much attention to the hoop since "The Cake is a Lie" became the biggest meme of the game, and overall one of the biggest video game memes of all time.

2) Burgh, Pokemon Black and White (2010) When designing Burgh, developer Yusuke Ohmura said Gamefreak had many of their female employees give input on his design to create their ideal handsome man. However, as someone who's been in the Pokemon fandom for almost 3 decades, in the 15+ years since Pokemon Black and White released, I have personally never seen any fans swoon over Burgh, or even mention him in general. If anything, characters like N and Colress are far more well-known within the fandom as the most handsome and beloved male characters of Pokemon Gen 5.

Squid Game — Gong Yoo has an asymmetrical face, and he incorporated that in his performance as the Recruiter by expressing 2 emotions at the same time (right side is confident, left side is scared)

It (2017) — Bill Skarsgård has the ability to move his eyes independently. As a result, Pennywise is cross eyed, with the right eye looking at the characters and the left eye staring at the camera

Stranger Things — Gaten Matarazzo has cleidocranial dysplasia, so Dustin also has it and it is brought up often in the first seasons

Mean Girls — Tim Meadows broke his wrist before filmings began, so in the movie, principal Duvall's cast is justified as being carpal tunnel syndrome

miscellaneous Tropes that became problematic

Thumbnail

The Persistent Suitor: A guy who is after the girl and just wont take no for an answer. Nowadays we just call stalking and harassment, but it used to be romantic. Example: The Notebook (2004), Noah asks Allie out while she's on a date with another man. She refuses, but he threatens to let go and fall unless she agrees to go out with him.

Comedic Woman On Man Violence: Mostly seen in anime, recently it has decreased a lot but years back every show had a woman hitting a guy and showed it as funny. Example: Toradora!, where the quintessential tsundere, Taiga, beats up the MC regularly.

Kid Bags Adult Baddie: I remember a few of these, sometimes it was to show how cool and awesome a kid was because an adult woman fell for him, now it's just seen as problematic shit. Example: Blank Check, the woman likes the kid and kisses him telling him to look for her in 10 years.

Avenger’s Infinity War - After Thor impales Thanos with his hammer, he assumes victory. However, Thanos is still able to snap his fingers, carrying out his wish to erase half the universe, and ultimately survives the hammer injury too.

miscellaneous The hardest difficulty is essentially an entire different game

Thumbnail
gallery
11.6k Upvotes

I get a bit miffed whenever I look at hard modes and see that the only differences are: enemies hit harder and have more health. That's why I find it so refreshing when a game's "hard mode" switches up how you play the game in general.

  1. Cursed Mode [Look Outside]: The hardest difficulty of this game essentially takes everything in the base game and shuffles them around, mixing in new things throughout. A door that's usually open now requires you to beat an "optional" boss. The tutorial enemy now can kill you if you're not careful. Existing bosses have new phases. There are brand new bosses just... hanging out. I think you get it.
  2. Lethal Mode [Ghost of Tsushima]: This difficulty setting is very simple and very fun. The enemies deal a shit-ton of damage, enough to kill you in couple swings, but you also deal absurd damage. It forces you to play carefully and near flawlessly if you want to win.
  3. Survival [Fallout 4]: F4 is better in survival mode, full stop, and that's dimply because it adds in survival mechanics to your post-apocalyptic survival game. Hunger, thirst, fatigue. You actually have to engage with the world around you.
  4. Nightmare Mode [Dying Light - The Beast]: At a baseline, this difficulty does some fun stuff that we've seen before; specifically, it is permadeath and adds in a hunger mechanic. What really sets this mode apart for me, however, is the fact that (unlike other difficulties) every single zombie you kill, stays dead. It's such a cool concept, and you could - theoretically - clear out the entire map given enough time.

  1. "Fridging" - a love interest female character is killed off (aka "fridged") to serve as motivation to the male main character. Named after a 1994 DC comic where the villain, Major Force, kills Kyle Rayner's girlfriend and stuffs her into a refrigerator.

  2. "Flanderization" - A personality trait of a character is emphasized more and more as the series goes on, leading to them becoming what feels like a caricature of their past selves. Named after Ned Flanders from The Simpsons, whose religious observance became more and more emphasized until it turned into extreme dogmatism.

miscellaneous (Meta Trope) A major part of the general public's perception of a character or work is majorly outdated no longer being relevant to said character/media at all.

Thumbnail
gallery
9.3k Upvotes

Any example of the general public's perception of a work/character that the actual media itself has long since moved past.

  1. Spiderman and Mary Jane. The general public image of Spiderman still remains with his true love being Mary Jane. Virtually every adaptation features Mary Jane as the final relationship, and numerous fan works also prominently feature said relationship. In modern Spiderman comics Mary Jane and Peter divorced each other and haven't been in a relationship for almost a decade now.

  2. RWBY and Beacon academy. Originally RWBY was about the characters attending essentially a magical school so they could learn to become monster hunters. Virtually any fan made material, or the vast majority of extended media/reboots is set during this time period. In the main show however Beacon Academy, and even the country it was in, have been long since destroyed with all the protagonists having left it many seasons ago. In Volume 7 they even briefly served a stint attending Atlas' academy instead on a part time basis until also leaving there.

  3. Batman works alone. Virtually every adaptation of Batman puts an emphasis on him being a complete loner, and most fan works treat Batman as working as a lone individual in Gotham. In the main comics Batman has a long list of sidekicks who have now become adults and heroes in their own right alongside him, often referred to as the "Bat Family" now. There is virtually always a team of fellow heroes in Gotham he can call upon if needed.

  1. The Naked Gun (2025) had a scene where Frank, Ed and everyone in Police Squad cried over their Fathers, mocking the whole “Passing the Torch” trope. But when it got to Nordberg who was previously played by OJ Simpson, Nordberg looked to the camera and shook his head.

  2. One of the Guest Stars on Clone High S1 was musician Marylin Manson, but by the time Clone High S2 came around (which sucks, don’t watch it) Marylin had some pretty serious allegations against him, so the crew behind Clone High S2 put him in the Cancelled Corner with John Wayne and the Sheep Teacher.

DMC V: Vergils Chair Edition - An edit of a DMC V cutscene replaced the main antagonist fucked up evil tentacle chair with a regular cheap lawn chair. Many people thought this was just what the actual cutscene was (and still do)

Dragonball: Trunks is a fucking dumbass - An edit of a dragon ball scene where the character Trunks tries to throw his sword in the air and have it land in his scabbard. In the original show, this succeeds. The more widely known edit makes him completely fuck it up (like a dumbass)

Fake Portal 2 Endings - Ok I don't know if anyone else experienced this but it was a really popular thing when the game first came out to make fake versions of it's ending or alternate endings to it that I saw as a kid and thought were totally real, having only seen it on YouTube. Like I thought that there actually was an alternate ending where the view of the wheat field was revealed to just be a painted wall and it falls away to reveal you're still in the lab

MICHAEL DON'T LEAVE ME HERE MICHAEL MICHAAAAAAEL MICHAEL - A sound bite from a FNAF fan analog horror series on YouTube, where the main antagonist screams for help as he's burning to death. Many people believed this to be a sound bite from the games themselves.

Spoilers for breaking bad season two and sweetpea season one

  1. Walter white, breaking bad.

In season two, episode thirteen, meth-master Walt is given a high dose of anaesthetics before his cancer surgery. His wife and son are there, comforting him. He’d been fighting with skyler earlier in the season, with her having a vague idea that something was up. He had soothed her over the season, and they were back on the road to a genuinely loving marriage. As he slips off, his wife Skyler asks him if he’s brought his phone. Walt replies “Which one?” Skyler’s looks up and it’s clear she’s figured it out. Anna Camp’s acting in this moment is PEAK

  1. Rhiannon Lewis, sweetpea

In the last part of the finale everything has gone right for Rhiannon. She has gotten away with a murder spree, having framed someone else who she killed. Not only that, she is waking up next to AJ, her coworker, and one of the only guys to ever really see her. Unfortunately this turns out to be true to a tragic extent. AJ pulls up a picture of the knife, showing Rhiannon as she rests on him in bed. Rhiannon subconsciously echoes something AJ had said in episode one: “Serious bit of kit that.” Of course, AJ had been saying that about the switchblade that Rhiannon had been using to open letters at the reception desks. It takes a second or two, but AJ remembers. He realised that the two knives are one and the same. He gets up, demanding Rhiannon show him the knife. Rhiannon awkwardly laughs it off. This spirals into the tragic ending of season one. Poor AJ :(
