Kanye put out a song called heil Hitler and still sells out stadiums.

Ed will be ok.

3.9k

u/joshak 27d ago

Kanye is also scheduled to perform at AT&T stadium in Arlington, which Macklemore has been banned from.

Criticizing genocide in Gaza is antisemitism but praising hitler is not. God I hate this timeline

1.8k

u/tsuness 27d ago

Just another reminder it was never about antisemitism.

u/AdministrativeLeg14 27d ago

The amazing thing is that there are articles making the rounds of Macklemore dressing up as an extremely offensive Jewish stereotype. (He’s since apologised for it; make of that what you will. Maybe he deserves forgiveness, maybe he doesn’t; I don’t know or care enough about the guy to try to find an answer.)

…But in spite of the photos of Macklemore in the Judenhass equivalent of blackface, what actually upset people was calling for the end to genocide in Gaza? That's what he gets cancelled for?

Huh.

Yeah, it sure as fuck isn’t really about antisemitism when they ignore evidence of actual antisemitism and insist that he must be cancelled for speaking against genocide.

131

u/tsuness 27d ago

Yeah that one killed me too, they had no issues with Macklemore until he said Free Palestine. There was nothing about his 2014 incident until after he was already cancelled.

60

u/Squeakygear 27d ago

What’s hilarious is Pink used his 2014 incident as an excuse for her “feeling scared” after being called out on her initial response to his recent activism. Indeed, the whole righteous indignation of her / Kraft is performative and simply a shield of Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Those pictures and the apology were also from 12 years ago.

This wasn’t some new thing that just showed up, people just went digging because they didn’t give a shit when it happened. Only now so they can pretend to be outraged and offended is it an issue.

8

u/Used-Lake-8148 27d ago

What an outstanding comment. This sub seems to be the last place you can find reasonable, well-thought-out takes on Reddit.

3

u/kinkyaboutjewelry 27d ago

They would not acknowledge that because they do not want to separate those two things and treat them individually. If they stay glued together, then anyone against one of them is certainly accusable of the other thing. Which is very convenient for whoever is deciding what the talking points are.

2

u/addys 26d ago

I posted this elsewhere in the thread, repeating it for you- The difference is that only one of those was inside a venue during a paid performance - which exposes the venue and the organizers to liability. These are people with no moral or ethical standards whatsoever, but they *do* care about their bottom line.

2

u/CharlieSwisher 26d ago

I would consider what’s happening to Macklemore now as the opposite of cancelling

2

u/ShvitzG_d 26d ago

Speaking as a Jew, I can say confidently that conservative Christians and Trump are purposefully watering down the word to align with Israel at the behest of Bibi.

While there has been a surge in actual antisemitism across the U.S. and world, non-Jews are taking it less seriously because they just now see it at as “oh, Israel.”

I personally think it’s purposefully meant to harm us in the diaspora into moving to Israel and its expansionist state. It’s disgusting.

2

u/ExaminationWide5415 26d ago

Yeah, it sure as fuck isn’t really about antisemitism when they ignore evidence of actual antisemitism and insist that he must be cancelled for speaking against genocide.

Also note that fucking Heil Hitler Kanye West is performing at stadiums that Macklemore is banned at, which further points towards a lack of caring about actual antisemitism by those in charge.

Having said that, as dumb as banning Macklemore for his statements are, it's also very telling of much of the online "I'm antizionist not antisemitic" will literally find a hundred different ways to excuse almost any level of antisemitism as long as as you say free palestine as well. I will not be surprised by the end of the year, we see leftists embrace full on holocaust deniers like Candace Owens.

To add, Israel originally stole the land from the Palestinians because they just didn't have anywhere else to go.

They kicked them out of their own residence, then genocide'd them because they used scraps to build a house in the backyard.

u/FILTHBOT4000 27d ago

Sorry, this is ahistoric nonsense. The land was granted to Jews after the Ottoman Empire lost WW1 while being allied with Germany. They were trying to take land from others, conquer other countries, so part of the deal of losing is you lose some land to discourage you from trying that shit again. That's how war works. It wasn't "stolen".

100%. There’s nothing Zionists love more than mentioning Nazis, they would hate if you forgot about them.

64

u/catechizer 27d ago

Until you start comparing their actions with what the Nazis did. I'll never understand the people who think because the Nazis treated them that way, they now have the right to treat non-Nazis that way.

48

u/A-Literal-Nobody 27d ago

The fact that a group of people could endure multiple of their generations going through that kind of pain, and then turn around and inflict it on someone else is sickening.

50

u/lt_dt 27d ago

Israeli settlers are doing to Palestinians what was done to my Jewish family by the Nazis and complicit Poles in WW2. I can't be okay with that.

I think that there are two kinds of people in the world. People who experienced hardship and don't want subsequent generations to endure what they did, and people who experienced hardship and want subsequent generations to suffer as they did, or more.

There's actually maybe a third kind of person: those who've never known suffering and can't conceive that other people suffer.

4

u/Visible_Ad8628 27d ago

i was just thinking about this a lot lately. the older half of my siblings are the ones who think others deserve to suffer like they did, the younger half want to make the world a better place, doesnt want others to suffer as we did. i live in an abusive household

Its what capitalism trains

3

u/iwilltalkaboutguns 27d ago

It's actually not surprising. Men that physically and sexually abused kids were likely abused themselves. They are traumatized and it causes them to inflict the same pain on others. Maybe there is something similar happening here.

Cults in general love resistance, because it pushes members back into their arms. This is why so many send members out to preach and recruit. Violence against them only furthers their beliefs. But in the case of Zionists, they don't preach or recruit openly to outsiders. It's hard to become Jewish, and they've had legitimate hatred throughout history that is abhorrent and wrong.

Zionists prey within their own religion on otherwise regular Jewish people, to make them feel afraid and isolated (due to exploiting that hatred) without others "like them" to protect them... instead of them being a part of a wider world tapestry, they're told they have to go to this specific country because it's the only place that's safe.

Exactly. Israel is the kid who sprained his ankle in first grade and still fakes a limp in high school for sympathy.

5

u/trebory6 27d ago

Honestly the fact that Israel hasn't said anything about Germany's far right gaining steam, makes me think that if push comes to shove Israel and modern Nazis might end up settling their differences and joining together against the ones they both hate. It's not crazier than any of the other shit currently happening.

2

u/MichaelJServo 27d ago

The real number is much higher. Any number lower than 100,000 is using the official, now defunct, health ministry count, which used only identifiable deaths. So it doesn't apply, say, to people who were in a building when it got bombed and were buried under the rubble, which is like 90% of standing structures. It also doesnt count people who have died of famine or disease secondary to having their country completely destroyed.

Apparently attacks on the Jewish community are not as bad as expressing support for Palestine and exposing the Zios

77

u/robilar 27d ago edited 27d ago

That's because the people that are objecting to Macklemore aren't objecting to anti-semitism. They don't need to get Ye banned because Ye is actually anti-semitic, and the people that dislike anti-semitism already don't like him. They need to get people like Macklemore banned (and people like Ms Rachel attacked and disenfranchised) because those people are criticising their actual vile acts which have nothing to do with Judaism. Israel's mass slaughter of Palestinians isn't a religious thing, it's a genocidal thing. Framing critiques as anti-Jewish is just a shield from legitimate criticism.

Don't get me wrong, anti-semites also attack Israel for militaristic state violence, so for a layperson that isn't paying close attention it might be hard to tell the difference. For those of us who are paying attention it's not difficult to tell the difference between a Ye West and a Macklemore, or a Ms Rachel and a Tucker Carlson. Or a Kraft that bans Macklemore and platforms Ye.

Edit: I just want to add that I'm pretty thrilled with the supporting acts for standing (or, rather, leaving) on principle. Some bigots rallied to silence someone speaking out for justice, and while they'll hurt a lot of innocent people (crews and fans), the bigots themselves will also take some heavy hits. Usually they just get away with it.

12

u/fowlplayer99 27d ago

Philosophically, the Ye nazi stuff is so ridiculous that there is a sort of blanket "that dude is insane" in every story. He is not an effective critic of anything Israel does. He's just a blunderbuss Nazi.

Looking at the overreaction to Macklemore or Ms Rachel (WTF?) - it's because these people track normal. Normal convinces average people, huh, this thing that reasonable not-crazy person said seems reasonable.

Macklemore is targeted because he's effective, and he's dangerous to the regime because of that.

Which is a goddamn joke. It's so funny to me that MACKLEMORE is the reason I knew as a young teen that the world was going to shit. His music has always spoken to me, but he himself speaks to ke even further. He's always been so cool and so supportive of absolutely every group of people that need love and people shit on him for it. LGBTQ+ folks. People with skin that isn't white. Palestinians. And somehow people think he's a "white rapper with a career that failed because he tried to fit in with his fellow black artists" knowing DAMN WELL that isn't what happened to him.

I'll never stop listening to dude's songs. "St Ides" by him is my favorite song ever made.

11

u/failedopportunities 27d ago

I like Mack. Hell, I liked Ed too. For me, this sheds new light on both of them though. I always knew Mack was supportive of things that lots of people would find deplorable. I thought Ed had some of the same views as well. I feel Mack’s public announcement was very honest, yet holding back quite a bit. I don’t know if Ed has made any yet. I imagine he’s slinking down in his chair so far you couldn’t see the top of his head if you were standing above him. Mack said he knows he’s going to lose sponsors and support, but it’s already being shown that it’s the exact opposite of that! Ed has shown true colors. Mack has been wearing them for I don’t even know how long. I’m sure Ed will be fine. He’s rich as hell already and it’s not the end of the world for him (maybe publicly for awhile though..) Mack on the other hand, is rich as well, but I think his stance on this, as well as his constant, blatant, open view and understanding of all the other “deplorable” things, just opened so many new doors for him that his head will be spinning trying to figure out which ones to walk through! Mack’s going to win here! By a landslide! No doubt!

6

u/PurpleInfinite1409 27d ago

Fucking shoutout to you, dude, because you just said what I've been telling mfs for years. When America was in its "acceptance" era and gay marriage was finally starting to be seen as normal and things like that were happening, he was a fucking rockstar and I was so thrilled to see it. Eventually, a certain orange tard is gonna be gone and there won't be anymore empowerment going towards the sick fucks that are scattered across our country, and hopefully people go back to realizing Macklemore was ahead of the game and a genuinely fantastic human being when it happens. I've never been one of those people that goes crazy over celebrities and their every move like some mfs do, but I'll be a supporter of Mack until the day I go down on the dirt because THAT is what a truly inspirational human-being looks like.

2

u/PlayfulSurprise5237 27d ago

I've always thought it such a shame he didn't become an actor or voice actor.

He really is a character.

I grew up with a second dad(friends dad) who was very similar to this. Just batshit fucking insane and bipolar x10000.

He would come in the room completely at random screaming so angrily spits flying out of his mouth "GOD DAMN DEMOCRATS, FUCKING FIREFIGHTERS, CANT FUCKING BLAH BLAH BLAH".

Just went on like that for probably a minute and then would walk away like nothing happened.

He'd come back an hour later or so randomly and say "I'm sorry for yelling at you guys, I was just angry" and ask us if we wanted a snack. We were 7-8 years old.

He terrified me as a kid, but when I became a young adult something clicked and he was the funniest fucking person in the world to me.

I think it was after I started smoking bud and taking a bunch of psychedelics. The madness spoke to me

Nowadays that's my favorite kind of humor, angry insanity. If someone acts like that around me, for any reason, I just start dying laughing. Ive got close to getting killed or beat up from it too cause sometimes it's serious, but I can't hold it in.

He was destined to just be the next in a long line of central Texas conspiracy kooks. Austin had an anti-authority streak, but it was based largely in being pro-weirdness. So people who believed in conspiracy theories were just part of that. He was meant to have a late night radio show heard predominately by groups of high young people.

But the internet hit, his audience consisted of more people at home alone taking it more seriously, then discussing it all together in serious contexts, etc. They got more serious, he got more serious, he got more angry, they got more angry, etc.

As was the Lex Friedman interview. They both really showcased the amount of fascist literature Ye engaged with during this time, and it's really shocking how much grace he's been extended. I think most folks just haven't watched those interviews, unfortunately, and not seen the depths of his descent into fascism.

17

u/ApplicationAfraid334 27d ago

Not really an excuse per se but at least he has clear mental issues. A lot of people are otherwise ‘normal’ minded and accept the shit he believes.

3

u/Proud-Swan3024 27d ago

There are excuses for things and then there are reasons for things. In my opinion, and the opinion of the vast majority of those supporting Kanye, the reason he did those things is his mental illness. He apologized publicly, was punished publicly, and now he endeavors to do better. I hate cancel culture and think we should all be given opportunities for redemption from past mistakes, especially as it applies to mental illness.

3

u/AStealthyPerson 27d ago

Tbh, thank God because his platform routinely features awful mouthpieces. Still, the Kanye interview is one of the most uncomfortable things I've ever seen in my life. It's clear Lex is even trying to coach him a bit and actually feels hurt at being rebuffed by Ye. It's a showcase not just of Kanye's mental health crisis that he was undergoing, but also a showcase of his politics fully and honestly. It's deeply unsettling in many ways, I feel it's worse than the Alex Jones interview, personally.

2

u/VeterinarianNo3555 27d ago

It very well could be. But that bodysuit Ye is wearing with Alex Jones certainly adds to the… vibe of that interview. Anyway, I appreciated you mentioning the grace Kanye has been extended despite his public remarks because it’s a rare thing to occur nowadays.

u/BicFleetwood 27d ago

He recently (as in post-Heil-Hitler) played stadiums owned by Robert Kraft, the billionaire fascist prick who demanded Macklemore get tossed for "antisemitism."

2

u/arachnophilia 26d ago

actual nazis aren't a threat to support for israel. nazis aren't taken seriously, and tend to support israel because they like fascist ethnostates and would actually prefer if all the jews were in one convenient place.

calm, reasoned, compassionate and widespread public support for ending the genocide against palestine is a threat to israel. enough people get on board, they pressure their representatives and senators, israel stop getting material and financial aid.

People really need to realize that Reddit/the internet does not represent real life.

36

u/PlasticPreparation74 27d ago

The Odyssey was probably one of the best examples of online being a drop in the ocean compared to the real world. Or online being completely infested with bots. You’d almost think that the movie would tank with the amount of bad publicity it was getting.

22

u/lazyboi_tactical 27d ago

The election should have opened a lot of eyes to this as well. Beforehand reddit would have had you believing it was just a formality and that the results were already locked in.

31

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 27d ago

Fence voters don't use reddit and conservatives understandably stick to their own spaces, I actually would too if I got eviscerated every time I opened my mouth about politics

So you're left with a huge liberal echo chamber. Which is actually becoming a problem in and of itself, I'm banned from politics for a comment criticizing Democrats. I was probably harsh enough some mod assumed I was a Republican and banned me because I was also simultaneously banned from pics which is just another political echo chamber now too

12

u/PalantirImperator 27d ago

So you're left with a huge liberal echo chamber.

Reddit is also one of the most heavily astroturfed places on the entire heavily astroturfed internet. You've got Chinese bots, Russian bots, Elgin AFB bots, American SuperPAC bots (from both wings), and all of the useful idiots who believe their posts without doing any critical thinking.

And then you've got maybe 5% actual people.

2

u/TheoremsAndProofs 26d ago

I got banned from whitepeopletwitter for correcting someone on something elon musk said, and I don't even like the guy. Blocked that sub so it wouldn't show up on my feed.

4

u/Key-Effect8176 27d ago

And you can never be left enough on Reddit. You can be overall on the left and be more center or even right on 1-2 issues, and that’s too much. If you’re not far left on every issue, you’re basically a Trump supporter. It’s ridiculous.

I got banned from one of the pop culture subs for saying Stalin was not a good guy and that Stalinism shouldn’t be the model that represents all socialism.

You could say this about 2016, not about 2024

2

u/BoringPoolPlaying 27d ago

Oh my god, no it wasn’t. People were hopeful that sanity would prevail in that election and put an end to MAGA. Enough of this revisionist crap.

Yes, ignoring all the usual people complaining about woke, it was strange to see how many people thought the period accuracy of armour was vitally important to general audiences.

Good movie. I like to tell people there's a lot of "and now we're here" but it's solid. About as well as you can do telling as much as you can of that whole story in 3 hours.

It's not really just Reddit, though. Every act on his tour, including his own band, dropped out. That's pretty serious. I can't remember this happening to another artist of a similar level.

I don't think he'll be permanently canceled. But I do think he's going to have to backtrack.

10

u/Random_Name_251 27d ago

They'll just cancel the next show, wait for it to blow over and sign a bunch of other acts to close the tour.

3

u/groavac777 27d ago

Not one person in this thread could name a member of his band without looking. He will get replacements and the tour will go on unimpeded. In a week the online mob will move onto the next virtue signaling exercise.

3

u/aqwimage 27d ago

Oh yeah what will ed do without these non mainstream people? Like reddit is crazy. People move on in like 2 days....Ed will be Ok...

29

u/LilSparraguy 27d ago

That's how capitalism works. Sheeran will be absolutely fine, take the cash and probably release an album detailing his hurt at not being understood and all he wanted was peace on earth and loads of money.

2

u/bollvirtuoso 27d ago

That isn't at all how capitalism works. It's perhaps how monopolistic competition works, but that is definitionally not capitalism. In a free and fair market, people who disagreed with Ed Sheeran would listen to different artists, until either Sheeran relented or went out of business. Since only like three companies control all music, though, it doesn't really matter. If they want him to stay famous, he will.

Ed culturally associates himself as Irish and you can see by his choice of support acts. This is going to impact him more personally than financially. The Irish have a long memory.

4

u/Historical_Owl_1635 27d ago

He absolutely does not, he fucking loves Ipswich lol.

He’s used his Irish heritage before but he’s never associated himself as actually Irish.

8

u/Absolute--Batman 27d ago

He literally has tonnes of songs about Ireland, you dummy.

A quick google also says that he feels Irish.

11

u/perpetualstatechange 27d ago edited 27d ago

“I class my culture as Irish. I think that’s what I grew up with,”

- Ed I support killing children Sheeran

4

u/AddlePatedBadger 27d ago

I have no skin in this game, don't really know the guy and have only heard snippets of his songs. What has he actually done to earn the epithet "supporting killing children"?

5

u/wow_plants 27d ago edited 27d ago

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but Macklemore made a pro-Palestinian statement at one of his tour dates, the venues panicked and refused to host him as Ed's supporting act (I think he was described as "inciting hate speech" or something, which is... laughable.)

Ed put out a bit of a wet-blanket statement where he acknowledged it's a messy situation but essentially refused to take a stance because that's not what his shows are about. He hasn't actually said anything egregious, but a lot of people are taking his "I won't take a side" as very much taking a side.

ETA: I kind of forgot, Robert Kraft is pretty openly pro-Israel. So his statement is really disingenuous no matter which side of the debate you're on.

2

u/perpetualstatechange 27d ago

No skin in the game. I completely understand, but it’s kinda the point. How hard is it to be against genocide when it has such little impact on our day-to-day? This is the same as saying both sides. If you are not against the oppressor, who are you for?

3

u/AddlePatedBadger 26d ago

It's grossly oversimplifying a complex issue. It's not a clearcut case of one side bad one side good like the Ukraine-Russia war. It's both sides being bad for who knows how long and currently having one unusually large spike of extra badness from one side. Of course I'm against genocide but it doesn't mean I'm pro Israel or pro Palestine. And there's no way to talk about it (or even to not talk about it) without bad actors from one side or the other spinning what you say into support for hate crimes.

Nobody is interested in nuance, they want you on their team and will accuse you of hatemongering or supporting genocide or supporting killing children or being a paedophile or a nazi or any number of other nasty labels if you don't reduce the whole thing to cartoonish simplicity where their team are the good guys and the other team are the baddies.

They did different things

Sheeran is toadying up to a big corporation instead of supporting his friend

Kanye is seriously mentally ill which accounts for oscillating between “Jonah Hill made me laugh in a movie I could never hate Jews” and “Heil Hitler is my new single!”

2

u/PlayfulSurprise5237 26d ago

Good point. These really aren't the same thing at all.

Apples and oranges.

Ed knows better, Kanye doesn't know up from down.

2

u/Liquid_Profanity 26d ago

Well it looks like we'll see a change up from Ed then. Why be nice in a world full of retards?

83

u/justsayfaux 27d ago

And the same venues that banned Macklemore didn't say a thing about booking Nazi Ye.

They're telling us who they are.

Good on Ed's band and the other opening acts for standing on principle over money.

18

u/eilrah26 27d ago

Wait so they are pro nazi and pro israel

13

u/no_cults_no_problem 27d ago

Crazy world, Americans are now best buddies with the people who brought down the WTC too.

6

An American Journalist too! He has dual citizenship.

3

u/FrenchFryCattaneo 27d ago

They're pro making money. They have no real principles.

2

u/RemindMeToTouchGrass 27d ago

They don't care about antisemitism, they care about financial support to Israel's current government.

3

No. The point is they have no principles, but are heavily invested in the Israel lobby

This is a deep cut but anyone remember Frisky Dingo where they made a joke about Taquil (Kanye) making an album with 'controversial' album art and basically calling the Kanye stuff in 2003?

5

u/callmeturkeyleg 27d ago

Tbf Kanye was manic, had a TBI, and was off his meds, so his situation was way different. Not that I think Ed Sheeran is doomed, I'm just saying.

3

u/CantTouchKevinG 27d ago

Wait, when did he get the TBI? I don't purposely follow Kanye but that seems like a big thing to have missed

3

u/callmeturkeyleg 27d ago

He got it in the 2002 car crash that also broke his jaw & led to him recording "Through the Wire." He didn't find out he had it until 2023, and didn't make it public until this year, but I think it was prettyyyy obvious from his behavior.

3

u/CantTouchKevinG 27d ago

Oh shit, I didn't even know he got into a car crash. I thought it was just his bipolar.
