The Odyssey was probably one of the best examples of online being a drop in the ocean compared to the real world. Or online being completely infested with bots. You’d almost think that the movie would tank with the amount of bad publicity it was getting.
The election should have opened a lot of eyes to this as well. Beforehand reddit would have had you believing it was just a formality and that the results were already locked in.
Fence voters don't use reddit and conservatives understandably stick to their own spaces, I actually would too if I got eviscerated every time I opened my mouth about politics
So you're left with a huge liberal echo chamber. Which is actually becoming a problem in and of itself, I'm banned from politics for a comment criticizing Democrats. I was probably harsh enough some mod assumed I was a Republican and banned me because I was also simultaneously banned from pics which is just another political echo chamber now too
Reddit is also one of the most heavily astroturfed places on the entire heavily astroturfed internet. You've got Chinese bots, Russian bots, Elgin AFB bots, American SuperPAC bots (from both wings), and all of the useful idiots who believe their posts without doing any critical thinking.
I got banned from whitepeopletwitter for correcting someone on something elon musk said, and I don't even like the guy. Blocked that sub so it wouldn't show up on my feed.
And you can never be left enough on Reddit. You can be overall on the left and be more center or even right on 1-2 issues, and that’s too much. If you’re not far left on every issue, you’re basically a Trump supporter. It’s ridiculous.
I got banned from one of the pop culture subs for saying Stalin was not a good guy and that Stalinism shouldn’t be the model that represents all socialism.
Reddit isn’t an echo chamber. Just because a lot of us hate nazis and fascists doesnt mean everyone agrees with everything. I’m tired of this assertion. There’s people in this goddamn thread who are supporting Koonye, for fucks sake
So you're left with a huge liberal echo chamber. Which is actually becoming a problem in and of itself, I'm banned from politics for a comment criticizing Democrats.
They do not ban for those things. You probably got banned because you attacked someone personally on the sub, and the person you attacked reported you for it.
That shit they do not tolerate. Calling another poster a bot, attacking them personally, or just shit like that gets you banned.
That's crazy, I was banned from /r/politics for telling a Republican to jump up his own ass and die. Which is a quote from the tv show Archer, in my defense. Also further in my defense, it was good advice for that particular specimen.
Politics just seems to not want to be a subreddit where people discuss politics, in my experience.
And sure, yeah, also maybe a subreddit where you can't tell someone to jump up their own ass and die, whatever, who's counting.
The election should have opened a lot of eyes to this as well.
Eh, to be fair, I think people rightly assumed that voters were not this fucking dumb as to vote for a guy who was saying every chance he got that he would raise our taxes (tariffs).
And then when he becomes president, he raised our taxes (tariffs) just like he said he would and everyone is upset about it lol.
Literally everything that Harris said Trump was going to do, he has fucking done.
The thing that Reddit fucked up, was that people here assumed people were not fucking morons.
Yes, ignoring all the usual people complaining about woke, it was strange to see how many people thought the period accuracy of armour was vitally important to general audiences.
Good movie. I like to tell people there's a lot of "and now we're here" but it's solid. About as well as you can do telling as much as you can of that whole story in 3 hours.
That’s not the point though. The bad publicity in question was basically hordes of people vowing not to watch it itself. It ended up grossing a ridiculous amount. The film being good or bad has little to do with my comment. Nobody projected it to be this successful. The trailers had overwhelming dislikes, but people flocked to watch it regardless. My point is there is a big disconnect between online and offline, and/or, there are a lot of bots online.
Fair enough. The idiots in question were a massive amount though. Go through the Odyssey trailer comment sections. There are people talking about Nolan selling his soul or shit like that😭 I don’t even know where that came from. It was used as a punching bag from the right wing grifters, Lupita and Elliot Page were the easy targets for them. The funny part was replies within comments living in this echo chamber and being so wrong. Although I do have the benefit of hindsight, how could a bunch of real people convince each other of utter bullshit. But then again, religions and braindead conspiracies exist on a much larger scale so I really shouldn’t be surprised
Bad example.... Yes it made money and a good bit, but compare it similar movies it should've been blowing by in record books, and adjusted for inflation it couldn't even crack the top 50, at which point I quit looking. Context is key, and in context, while the Odyssey seen success, it also should've seen far more success, and almost definitely would've if it did not alienate a whole section of the country.
Don’t a lot of modern movies, when adjusted for inflation, pale in comparison to older classics like Gone With The Wind? I’ve read that there is a lot of context to it like theatres being way more popular back then and also being the only way to watch movies, along with being run for upwards of 20 years. Apart from Avengers Endgame, Avatar and Titanic, all the other movies in the top adjusted for inflation list are more than 50 years old. Also Odyssey was an R-Rated film, and that definitely affects its ticket sales, but I don’t know to what degree. Again, I also admit that the IMAX marketing and the costlier tickets have definitely aided in its gross. But I’d say it’s definitely been a big success considering it’s Universal’s highest grossing film ever
A certain type of movies tend to fall into instant classics and movies of this nature, with legendary directors tend to have far greater success. Let's live in reality. And I don't know where you got your top 50, but it's wildly inaccurate if only those few are in top 50. 😂
Also, R rated has rarely ever slowed down a movie much, that was great.... There's plenty of those floating around also. Do better
It’s the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. And adjusted for inflation, it looks like it’s #2 based on the list I found. An R rating definitely does slow a movie down, and it did extremely well given that handicap.
It's not really just Reddit, though. Every act on his tour, including his own band, dropped out. That's pretty serious. I can't remember this happening to another artist of a similar level.
I don't think he'll be permanently canceled. But I do think he's going to have to backtrack.
Not one person in this thread could name a member of his band without looking. He will get replacements and the tour will go on unimpeded. In a week the online mob will move onto the next virtue signaling exercise.
Are you saying this is a typical situation? Again, this doesn't normally happen with artists at this level. Imagine if all the openers on the Eras Tour had just dropped out.
Ed Sheeran chose these openers for a reason. Artists of that level don't tour with just anyone. They choose artists they think will maybe bring in new fans or have some sort of synergy. It's not just whoever they could find.
The fact that all of these artists dropped out means that they and their teams have agreed that staying on the tour is not the best decision. Maybe it's because of their own personal opinion, but at this level, PR is important. They're clearly showing that they feel staying on the tour means a greater PR blow than leaving it.
Okay, I agree that his career isn't over, but the fans who learn about this and still support the tour, I don't want to be like them. They're trash, no matter how many of them there are.
Wha? Reddit remains one of the only sane collective presently influencing real life, via AI linked/scraped data. Here’s to Reditt for keeping it actually real.
That might be true when it comes day to day life, but this will absolutely follow Ed Sheeran for a very long time. Even losing two to three thousand fans per show might now seem like a lot but that's real life money.
Easily sell out his next tour? This tour isn't even sold out though! He's never gonna be able to replace the fans he lost by being a Zionist puppet. He's fucked.
