U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Unique ways to see if brother is alive?

1.3k Upvotes

Hi all,

My brother has been missing for 10 days. We have filed missing persons report but looking for more immediate answers. He is in state of New York.

Things I’ve tried:
- Filed a SCRA because there was a thought he might have enlisted. (I have his SSN). Came back as no record of active duty status.
- he has mint mobile, i was able to access his account but they don’t offer call logs. I did get a notification that he hasn’t used data in 2 days
- i tried to get a credit report on him but got locked out
- he doesn’t have a last active status on what’s app or facebook message
- i checked NYS criminal courts and there’s no arrest warrants

Besides those, we’ve tried all the other typical ways like contacting family and the sober house he is supposed to be residing in. So…. What other unique ideas do you have for me?

Thanks in advance!

Did Stephen Hawking get famous, because he was top of his field or did he get famous, because of his condition and being just very very good at physics?

Like was he insane at what he did, or was everything just boosted, because of how unlikely he would seem being a genius from a superficial pov

Edit: i know it’s hard to rank him, but if you had to, would he be in the top 10? 100? Or 10’000?

If you're sued, does some random person actually approach you, give you papers, and announce "you've been served"?

Surely this only happens on TV shows, right? It seems too weird for real life.

How do I figure out if someone is gay without making it awkward?

I’m a guy, and I really like this boy in one of my classes. He’s kind of a nerd, but in a cute way, if you know what I mean. I don’t really know him personally yet, and we haven’t talked much, but I am very much smitten.

The problem is that I have absolutely NO IDEA whether he’s gay, straight, bi, or anything else. I obviously don’t want to assume anything, and I definitely don’t want to make him uncomfortable or pressure him into sharing something personal.

I’d like to get to know him, but I’m nervous about making the first move when I don’t even know if he could be interested in guys or worth pursuing to begin with.

Can someone explain to me why Greta Thunberg got so much hate for her environmentalism as a kid?

4.3k Upvotes

I was also a kid so I might be wrong but I always felt like Greta always got hate and was always on the news getting hate but from as far as I know she does carry the ideals of a person who puts into practice the ‘correct’ and ethically ‘right’ beliefs.

Why has Greta gotten so much hate?

Edit: as a comment said there are different things that people deem as ‘correct’ and ‘right’ that’s why I out it into quotations as to me they seem that way but that is my subjective opinion.

How do I make Jehovah's Witnesses leave us alone?

I've heard that they have some sort of policy of leaving you be if you ask, but despite me and my husband both asking them (kindly) to leave and telling them we're not interested and follow a different religion, they always come back in a matter of days. I've even seen the same ones multiple times, so it's not just that they don't get the word around.

Is there any way to make them stop knocking on our house? My husband and I are pagan and have no interest in their messages, and it's reaching a point of absurdity. They showed up three times just this past week.

What is it with old people and Cracker Barrel?

For the longest time I thought it was just a meme, but seriously old people fucking LOVE cracker barrel. Does the company aggressively target them for marketing?

I'd think that old people would want to go to a resturaunt they went to when they were younger, but Cracker Barrel was founded in 1969 but didn't really get huge until the late 80s at the absolute earliest.

So why? Why is it always Cracker Barrel????

Why does Meghan Markle get only hate, negativity and vitriol but not anyone else within the royal family?

The comments on all the Facebook pages about her are so vile and almost all are negative. There's also many YouTube videos dedicated to only bashing her. Meghan Kelly and Piers Morgan are also relentless in criticizing her but It's like what did she even do that was so bad. Nobody else seems to rile people up from the royal family, not even Andrew. I get she left the family but I think she has a right to talk about what she went through.

If you accidentally break something insanely expensive in a museum (like a $10M vase), what actually happens to you legally and financially?

Assuming it was a total accident (you tripped or lost your balance) and not deliberate vandalism.

US new regulations on beef and fear of prion disease. What do I need to avoid?

I’m sure my anxiety is making me crazy but this is scaring the hell out of me, ever since i heard about the new ease of regulations on red meat in the US I’ve avoided any and all red meat. Only eating chicken and some fish when it comes to meat. Should I avoid those too? I tried to look this up but I didn’t find anything. I’m sure there’s details I’m missing about the new regulations as well but any and all information would be helpful.

Is it really true that people turn a blind eye when they see someone stealing baby formula?

• Upvotes

I've seen people say that if you see someone stealing baby formula, you should just look the other way and not get involved.

How true is this actually? Do people really let it slide because they feel bad for the baby, or is this just something people say online?

What would you do if you saw someone stealing baby formula from a store?

Why can a drug be restricted before we have much human research on it?

I’ve been following what’s happening with 7-OH and this part genuinely confuses me.

For anyone unfamiliar with it, 7-OH (7-hydroxymitragynine) is an active alkaloid found naturally in kratom in small amounts. There are also products containing much higher concentrations of 7-OH. It acts on opioid receptors and people report using these products for things like pain or managing opioid withdrawal, although there are also concerns around dependence and withdrawal.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions about 7-OH especially when it comes to human research and long term effects. At the same time, states and federal regulators have already been considering restrictions on concentrated 7-OH products.

I understand why regulators wouldn’t necessarily wait years if they think there’s a public health risk. But how do they decide there’s enough evidence to act when the research itself is still developing?

And if better research later shows legitimate benefits or changes our understanding of the risks, is there actually a normal process for reconsidering those restrictions?

How long will it be before the Russian bot farms are back online?

Are we talking days, weeks or months?

I know that the data canters that sustained a lot of bot farms were taken out and that there has been a drop in Russian bot traffic. How quickly will they be back?

Edit: Based on some replies, they already back lol.

Are there overwhelmingly more male whistlers than there are of women?

Whether it's to call attention, to celebrate an occasion, or just to pass the time, 90% of people who can whistle that I've personally heard have been male. Why would this be? Are men more natural as whistlers, or is there some social stigma against women not being allowed to whistle perhaps?

My Female Friends keep Telling Me They Want Man Like Me (Female)

Curious if this is a shared experience 🤔 honestly have been hearing it since I was 16. I (f. 28) keep getting told by close female friends throughout my life that they want a man like me. Not me in particular I'm assuming, but me if I was a man I think is what they mean.

Background, I am the athletic tomboyish straight woman that often gets mistaken for a lesbian. Even my family thought I would be the gay one out of my siblings, meanwhile my hyper-fem sister turned out to be the lesbian 😂... they never saw it coming.

Anywho, my galpals have always told me that want a man like me... mind you some of them have been married. I'm pretty chill, and I treat my friends well... nothing crazy I simply show them I care and show up for them like a regular-degular friend.

But this last time got me... we have been pals since 18, serviced (military) at the same duty station, and ended up in the same state when we got out. Both of us put consistent effort into the friendship so now its been 10yrs of solid friendship. And she said it, and it unlocked this line of questioning.

So does this happen to anyone.. man or woman or whatever you prefer? I am really curious, has anyone explained this to you? Does it imply something about you?
