Moderator Post We will not be removing all sexual questions.

We've had a few complaint threads, so it seems to be about that time for one of these reminders. Let me be clear: We are not going to ban all sex related questions.

They are firmly within "TooAfraidtoAsk", and always have been. Sex is a fairly taboo topic in a lot of places, and a lot of people have questions about it. (And as an additional reminder, TATA is not only for controversial questions. Nor do we allow question shaming for "googleable" questions). These are not new changes.

We get that not everyone has the same interest in those topics, but it is a core part of the sub. Currently, there are ~5 out of the top 10 posts being sex related. Earlier today, it was 4. Earlier this week, it was 3. It typically fluctuates between ~3-5, usually averaging closer to 3.

If you have particular suggestions (e.g. things that seem ripe for the FAQ), or questions feel free to post them below. No promises, but we're always open for improvements if they're feasible. For a list of common questions we get on this topic (what do we already moderate, has the sub changed?, can i filter posts myself?) see the first stickied comment.

Politics Politics Megathread

You know the deal, same as the previous megathreads, which were archived.

The rules:

All top level OP must be questions. This is not a soapbox. If you want to rant or vent, please do it elsewhere. Otherwise, the usual sidebar rules apply (in particular: Rule 1:Be Kind and Rule 3:Be Genuine).

The default sorting is by new to make sure new questions get visibility, but you can change the sorting to top if you want to see the most common/popular questions.

Work How did banks keep track of accounts before computers?

I mean like way back in the day when everything was on paper. Like a small town standalone bank in a frontier State. What if there was a fire that destroyed all their records? How would they know farmer Brown had $1,000 in savings and farmer Miller owed $500 on a loan if the bank burned to the ground?

Grief & Loss What happens to your ashes after everyone in your immediate family dies?

My mom passed away when I was very young and she was cremated. Since I’m the youngest of my siblings, my dad decided that I would get her big urn with most of her ashes in it. It has letters in it from family members and drawings and such from a lot of my cousins and siblings who were also pretty young. She sits up on my bookshelf and watches over my house.

But I always ask myself what happens after I die? She might go to my niece, or my future children, but they don’t know her and after I die I guess I just have to hope that they hold onto her. And then what about my kids’ kids? Will they keep her? No idea.

I’ve thought about an inurnment so that she has a proper resting place for the rest of time but that just feels wrong. I want to have her with me until I die.

Does anyone have an urn from a great grandparent or great-great grandparent or some other family member that you never knew?

Mental Health Is it ableist to get mad at someone with anger issues when they refuse to take their medicine?

I have a friend with anger issues, diagnosed, has medication, but only takes it during the week when we have school (which he should be taking them every single day). He's never brought up a side effect or anything as to why he doesn't take it, but recently he's been taking his anger out on me, interrupting me, insulting my appearance, etc. Whenever this stuff happens he blames it on his anger issues, and honestly all I want to say to his is that if his anger issues are that bad then he should take his medicine instead of making it my problem, but I'm kind of afraid of being ableist towards him.

Edit: Thank you everyone for their comments honestly I'm feeling a lot better about this situation. I messaged him about creating distance, because his whole taking his anger out on me has basically killed my already dead mental health.

Work Odd happening at work?

Had this happen today at work. Going about my normal business, talking to co-workers and joking etc. all of a sudden this immense wave of horniness happened. I just wanted to reach out and grab one of them. I'm a female and work in a nursing home with a mix of male and female workers, we all get along and joke about everything. One co-worker in particular always makes sure to stop me and joke, talk etc. Has anyone else ever had this happen?

Culture & Society Why are people so protective of older teenagers?

I feel like people get a little too freaked out, and they are a little too scared when it comes to conversations around older teenagers, mainly 16 and 17-year-olds. One time I mentioned that a decent age to be considered a young man/woman is 16 to 24, because that's widely considered as "youth"

next thing you know everybody was like "16 and 17 are CHILDREN you weirdo!!" I'm 19 btw. 17 is a "child" but 18 is a grown man/woman? In my opinion, if an 18 year-old is suddenly considered a grown man/woman, it would make sense for a 17-year-old to be considered a young man/woman. Obviously you don't go from child to adult on a singular birthday.

No one is trying to "age them up" we're just not coddling them. I personally feel like we are extending childhood too far. At this point, let's make 30 the age of majority.

In my opinion, I feel like it's kind of telling whenever minors are brought into the conversation, the first thing people think about is sex. I wonder why.

Interpersonal Would it be weird for a mother to forget that her child has a deadly allergy?

All my life I thought my mother doesn’t care about me, I’ve never felt love from her, but all my life I thought I was being too hard on her too.

But I dont know, maybe I’m wrong.

I’m seriousl ill, I‘m lying in a bed in my room recovering. Normally I eat alone and buy my own food and she eats own her own. I feel great and glad that this time she decided to go cook food and brought them to my room yesterday.

But it was shrimp soup. I didn’t touch any of it and only ate the bread.

Today she cooked for me again, and brought me shrimp soup again from yesterday, and some boiled pork that’s boiled in the yesterday soup together. And breads

I didnt touch any of it. And breads only agaon

I’m deadly allergic to shrimp. I almost died once eating shrimps. It’s the only allergy that I have. I didnt remind her though

Is it weird that she doesn’t remember? That fucks me up a lot with my mind. I’m her only child though, is it weird that she doesn’t remember?

Current Events How do you know if you’re ugly?

So today, I met a girl online. It started with hi and hey, and then we started talking. Our vibes matched. She was literally laughing at my jokes and kept saying, “How do you know that? You’re the only one who knows that.” I said, “Maybe you’re the opposite gender of mine.”
We talked for like an hour. She asked me for my voice, so I sent it to her, and she liked my voice. We talked for 3–4 hours, laughing and having a good time. Then she asked me for a picture, I'm shy and asked her to send hers first. She sent it, and she was pretty, so I told her that. But when I sent her my picture, she said, “You look good,” and then blocked me.
Am I really that ugly? Everything was going well. Our vibes matched, and we had so much in common. But as soon as she saw my picture, she blocked me. I’m not crying because she blocked me, but does looks really matter that much? People straight up lie when they say looks don’t matter

Love & Dating How can unattractive people show their personality to potential partners if they can't get any dates?

I consider personality to be much more important than looks. I recently saw a post from a guy who shared his dating app stats and he had 10k rejections and only 2 matches. So I'm thinking that he could be the kindest person in the world, but since he can barely get any dates and dating app matches are based mainly on looks, he has no way of showing his kindness to potential partners. Should he just abandon the dating apps and try other ways to get a date?

Interpersonal My boyfriend views his exes photos when I’m not around. Was my reaction overboard?

Yesterday, I was a little hungover which makes me avoid my phone at all costs (not sure why, I get too anxious to look at it) so I was on my boyfriends Instagram reels and seen that you can look at link history. I seen that he was viewing his exes VSCO and other girls’ onlyfans pages on days where we didn’t see eachother. I then got curious and went to his camera roll and seen that he had explicit videos of him and his ex. (It wasn’t in the recently viewed folder which means he hasn’t watched them in the last 30 days).

I didn’t talk to him and cried all evening, night, and woke up at 2:30am to move to the couch and cried all morning. It was our first thanksgiving together (we’re in Canada) and I didn’t even eat or spend any time with him at all.

I don’t know how to bring it up but he comes home from work in a few hours. I was already feeling weird about their relationship because he told me he broke up with her, but I heard from a friend that she broke up with him… now I wonder if he still wants her and if I’d even be with him if she didn’t break up with him. I feel betrayed and disgusted. Is it okay to be so mad about this?

Family Has anyone basically had to leave everything/one behind and start over?

I didn't realize I was raised in a narcissistic family system until adulthood and then more recently how that shaped my friendships and all relationships now.

I've surrounded myself with people who will never seen me nor want to see me.

It was really eye opening when I lost my child and the lack of empathy and support given.

I think I'm finally strong and brave enough to leave it all behind and start over while making room for people who will love me in a loving way.

It's scary!

How did you do it and any tips or tricks?

Mental Health How to recover from shock content?

Hello reddit, this is my first post ever so please excuse any mistakes.

I recently went down an internet rabbit hole about shock content and ended up visiting the r/watch people die website out of morbid curiosity. I deeply regret the content I saw even though I was only on the website for no more than 15 minutes. I feel sick, nauseous even. I've never been disturbed by blood or nasty medical scenes. Some things get bloody, but in the end the person on the operating table is being helped and cared for. But the content on shock websites, shooters recording their killing sprees, gang violence, brutal murder scenes, it all makes my skin crawl. How could a human inflict such pain, hold such malice, not flinch doing unspeakable things? Not only that, but pain is one of my worst fears. I think of the anguish of these victims, and I ask why we humans were even created if some of us enjoy inflicting pain on others? I can't erase my memory unfortunately, but if anyone has any advice on how to recover from seeing shock content it would be greatly appreciated.

Love & Dating Are my parents right or wrong to be concerned that I’ve never been in a relationship?

Yes I’m 30 and never been in one. I would say it’s how my face is, but I’ve also just never really had any semblance of self confidence to begin with. Never believed in myself and basically seem to have more wrong with me (from a personality standpoint) than right. Even though I think of myself as a good person and try to live by the golden rule, I just have never had what most guys my age have had by now. And, to be honest, I’m considering giving up trying altogether and resigning myself to being alone since I’m not getting any younger and don’t think I’d add anything to anyone’s life anyway.

But are they right to be so concerned for me? Or no?
