Other ELI5: Monthly Current Events Megathread

Hi Everyone,

This is your monthly megathread for current/ongoing events. We recognize there is a lot of interest in objective explanations to ongoing events so we have created this space to allow those types of questions.

Please ask your question as top level comments (replies to the post) for others to reply to. The rules are still in effect, so no politics, no soapboxing, no medical advice, etc. We will ban users who use this space to make political, bigoted, or otherwise inflammatory points rather than objective topics/explanations.

Other ELI5: Why do so many doctors & nurses work insane 24+ hour workdays?

Medical professionals of all sorts so often seem to work CRAZY hours, one surgeon I talked to did a 10 hour surgery & that wasn’t even half her shift (or so she claimed). Doesn’t that leave a lot of patients at risk? Why would somebody agree to do a shift like that?

Edit: Grammar

Biology ELI5: why don’t we gag when eating food?

Why is it that putting something like a finger or toothbrush too far into your mouth causes a gag reflex but food going the same way is absolutely fine?

Mathematics ELI5, why do mathematicians spend so much time solving math equations?

I know close to nothing about math.

I'm a design student, I spend my days playing games, drawing and reading.

I'm currently reading "Maniac" by Labatut. Really interesting book.

In it, Labatut talks about the life of physicists and mathematicians spending DECADES solving math equations.

I mean, why and how? Even now, I read news about crazily inteligent people solving equations that mathematicians from the past were unable to.

It blows my mind, because how do you even discover unsolvable mathematical problems or equations in the first place? Aren't numbers, like, exact?

Edit: I know my question is extremely ignorant, and I'm not trying to say that it's a loss of time or anything like that.

Numbers are everything! I came here specifically because I'm genuinely curious because my brain can't really comprehend how that works sorry!

Physics ELI5: Why do ice cubes crack and make popping sounds when you drop them into a drink?

Mostly with ice straight from the freezer going into something like soda or tea. Is the ice expanding or shrinking when that happens, and why does it make an actual sound instead of just melting quietly?

Mathematics ELI5-Can yall help me understand the concept of limits and continuity in calculus?

I don’t understand the part in limits that show the numbers slowly approaching a number for example, like what does a limit serve?

Engineering ELI5: How does a combination microwave oven work?

So I just bought a microwavave oven combo, and wondered how the metal for the grill part not react the same way any metal in a microwave would when I’m using the microwave function?

How can I think of a food or drink and know the flavour or texture, the texture kinda makes sense but how can I imagine the flavour of a pacific punch monster at will?

I am not sure why that sharp pain happens, its almost similar to when I take a large amount of wasabi..can you explain it?

Technology ELI5: what is reverse coding/engineering ?

I’ve been seeing bunch of games get reverse coded/engineered and ppl playing like Mario in Elden rings or something. And now it’s happening to big software companies like Adobe and Spotify to make their services free. What exactly is reverse coding/engineering, how’s this being done and what does AI have to do with it? Idk how I feel about it honestly, im not a big fan of AI to being with and this seems a little scary to think about.

Engineering ELI5 How doe Balcony Solar work?

Why does it reduce the electricity bill? Why would an appliance draw power from the microinverter instead of the grid? Does the meter need to be of a special type to be compatible with Balcony Solar?

Biology ELI5: How did they discover antidepressants and antipsychotics without knowing what causes mood disorders?

Im really intrigued by this because like with diabetes they at least had some idea of what was going on. Like when they discovered insulin they had some idea that the pancreas was malfunctioning.

Technology ELI5 the anti MP3 push from 2002

Okay so I was watching The I.T. Crowd and there was a sticker that on the door that says “MP3 is not a crime” and I looked it up and I couldn’t really understand anything I was reading (maybe it’s been a long day).

The articles reference something called Napster, legal battles, consumer rights in music media, MP3s (remember those?), MUSIC (the organization, ig?), and I couldn’t understand much of the words or the situation.

Anyways, would love a simplified explanation because it does seem fairly interesting and, from what I did pick up, something relevant as video game companies stop making physical copies of games so that no one really “owns” what they buy.

Physics ELI5: Einstein’s theory of relativity, how does the biological time change??

Title basically, i just watched interstellar for the first time yesterday, and while i can understand the theory itself, i don’t understand how the biological time changes. For example, lets say i’m someone in space where 1 hour there is 10 years on earth, my organs would age 1 hour yet on earth for someone they will age 10 years? Like are organs, cells, our body bounded to a “general/universal” time where they age almost at the same rate for all humans but somehow differ when in different places of space or what?

Sorry if i’m not making it clear but this has been something i always thought about ever since i heard of the theory lol
