General Questions/Discussion Question about overdrive / Proxy distortion pedal capture gain/level staging

In my experience thus far I’m having a challenging time getting distortion pedals and captures to behave the way they seem to in front of a real amp.

In real life, Ive primarily used Tube Screamers, a Friedman BE-OD, a ToneKing Duellist, and a Suhr Eclipse. I typically have to keep all these pedals’ “Volume” or “level” parameters at around 4 to stay at unity, and anything beyond that radically increases volume output relative to the clean tone coming out of amp, whether I’m using a clean boost or not. I am trying to get a similar effect on Helix Stadium so my rhythm and lead distortion sounds can be around 2 or 4 dB louder without the use of gain blocks for each pedal (this is also because of the DSP usage of the clones).

The “level” knobs on distortion models don’t usually seem to audibly increase the relative levels of the clean tone and the distortion sound. This is particularly noticeable to me on pedals like the Heir Apparent or the Green 808. Beyond unity, there might be a decibel or two of relative increase but more likely it’ll just sound very squashed and compressed, almost like I’m hitting a limiter.

The Proxy clones I’ve made of my pedals behave similarly, though the lower gain captures can be pushed past unity further to get noticeable dB increases. But a high gain capture (for instance of my Suhr eclipse) will compress and stuff without really increasing the relative level compared to the clean tone I have dialed. I can turn Post Gain on the Clone block up to 10 and it’ll only be a dB or so louder on the output meter in both my Native DAW plugin as well as the Stadium XL.

The behavior is present on most clean amps—my default tone is the Deluxe 2x12.

For what it’s worth I had similar issues with the pedal models on the Quad Cortex, but the post gain parameter on the “captures” on that device behaved exactly as I wanted—small increases beyond unity position radically increased output volume relative to clean tone level. But the fact that I struggled with the simulated models on that device too makes me wonder if I’m not understanding something about gain staging or proper leveling at other parts of the chain, or the simulated behavior of the amps.

Any ideas?

General Questions/Discussion 1.4 Release Notes

Very bottom of the release notes for 1.4 it says:

Do we have to wait forever for 1.5 now?

Nope. It’s right around the corner and not what you expect.

Wonder what this could mean. <this is me leaning forward with interest>

General Questions/Discussion Showcase “Count In” and “Click” issues

My band is starting to run clicks and backings after I picked up a Stadium recently. I've got a ton of songs done, and we did our first practice last night (I tried them out on my own).

My first question is: Within Showcase, there is a "Count In" feature that I can't select. Is this available yet, coming in a future update, or am I doing something wrong? I can see it there, but when I turn the knob, nothing changes.

Second question: When I set up the backing tracks, I made sure to leave 2 measures of space before anyone comes in to compensate for not being able to use the "Count In" feature. However, when I click play (with a market to start click when I hit play), it's like it skips two beats before the click comes in. So rather than counting in: 1, 2, 3, 4 - 1, 2, 3, 4 it is more like: 3, 4, - 1, 2, 3, 4. This is throwing everyone off. Is there a fix for that or am I doing something wrong?

I do not currently have any screenshots or soundbites, but I can repost this if needed. Hoping someone already knows what I'm refering to.

General Questions/Discussion I just bought a Helix LT a month ago. How do I plug my phone into it to play backing tracks? I’ve tried several things but can’t get it to work. Is it even possible?

I’ve tried plugging my phone into the send or return ports and added the Send 1 setting in the signal chain as well as tried the returns. Can’t get anything to work. Somebody please help or tell me I’m wasting my time lol

General Questions/Discussion WORSHIP TONE: Helix Stadium. Hi I need help finding good overdrives. I normally use 3 snapshots: 1st-clean, 2nd-little more driven, 3rd-lead but I'm struggling to find the right drives. I tried using headphones to find some but it doesn't sound the same as when I play at church (more in body text)

Tech Help Request Line 6 Hx Stomp Xl tone inconsistency.

So i tried making tone like Dean Lamb's from his video with Nick Hill. I heard that Helix that Lamb used is the same as my Hx stomp Xl sound wise, so i tried recreating it like in the video with Badonk and XXL cabs and mine is not sounding any similar. Doesn't have enough crunch, sounds too digital. I use Seymour Duncan Jupiter rail 7 string pickup. I tried tweaking ins/outs on my Hx Stomp Xl yet I dont get any similar results. If anyone has any tips or solutions feel free to sugest them.

General Questions/Discussion Reggae preset recommendations?

I've done a few gigs with a reggae band with more on the books, and I'm relatively new to the genre so I'm looking for insight into effects and amp settings. Currently I'm running the following signal chain in Stomp mode:

  • Comp
  • Minotaur
  • Chorus (can't remember which model off the top of my head)
  • Phaser (Script Mod I think?)
  • Deluxe Reverb with 1x12, cab on or off depending on PA situation
  • Transistor Tape
  • Dynamic Plate

Everything's on one path, straight through, switching things on and off as needed in Stomp mode like a traditional pedalboard. I have the delay feedback assigned to the expression pedal so I can get the washed out dub thing, but other than that everything is either on or off.

Folks who play this kind of music, do you have any recommendations for other effects worth adding/swapping? Recommendations for snapshot combos? Preset packs you've found success with? Guitar players in the genre to check out for inspiration? Thanks!

Tone/Feature Demo Using POD Go Presets on Helix — Something Worth Knowing

I've noticed something interesting about POD Go and Helix presets.

There are tons of great POD Go tones available on YouTube, Line 6 CustomTone and other preset libraries. But if you own a Helix LT, Floor or HX Stomp, you can't simply import those .pgp files into HX Edit.

What some players might not realize is that compatible POD Go presets can be converted into .hlx format.

I actually ran into this problem after moving from POD Go to Helix LT, which led me to develop a small utility called HelixTools POD Go to Helix Converter.

It transfers compatible amp and effect settings, snapshots and footswitch assignments. Some presets still need adjustments, especially when external IRs are involved.

What I find more interesting now is that conversion isn't just useful when upgrading your gear. It also gives Helix users another source of tones to explore, tweak and expand.

I've documented the process on my YouTube channel, HelixToolsApp, for anyone interested in seeing how it works.

Has anyone here ever found a POD Go preset they wished they could use on their Helix?

General Questions/Discussion Looper reverse effect

I haven't bought a helix yet I'm trying to research everything first so I have a full understand of if I'm going to need any additional pedals to the helix if it can't do everything I want when I rebuild my rig from 15+ effects down to as minimal as possible pedals/rack effects, so if I could get away with just the helix and 2 expansion exp pedals that'd be amazing.

Essentially I want to play through the looper reverse so my guitar will come through backwards like the boomerang phrase sampler can do. With the boomerang if you press direction before tapping record 2times to establish the length of the loop your guitar will play backwards simultaneously while youre playing your guitar but if you press the thru mute button you will only hear the reverse guitar. Is the Helix capable of doing this? or will I need my boomerang along with the Helix to accomplish this?

https://youtu.be/AJ9dpeASHIs?is=Flt2r5RYAKUDxeMR the sound I'm going for starts at 2:58 and goes for about a minute before the effect gets turned off.

General Questions/Discussion Stadium Snapshot Reselect not working in Stomp Mode.

I was setting up my first Preset on my new Stadium, and I'm finding out that Snapshot Reselect, a core part of how I've been using my OG Helix Floor, doesn't work in Stomp Mode.

Okay, I'll change to Snapshot mode.

But Snapshot mode seems to be hard coded to have Bank ^ and Bank v to the far left switches, which isn't a limitation in Stomp Mode. There's no way to add single Block bypass assignments either. Additionally, Command Center seems to only be set to effect Stomp Mode, so I can't find a way to reassign those switches to Snapshots in Snapshot Mode.

Am I missing something? The Snapshot Reselect and Snapshots on the far left are something I'd really like to be able to keep doing on this new hardware. This wasn't a problem with the previous generation Helix Floor or Stomp XL, which could have Snapshots alongside Stomps and Snapshot Reselect worked just fine.

Thanks!

General Questions/Discussion What do you use as a gig backup?

I play in a cover band and gig with an HX Stomp XL. I have a fear that someday the unit may fail on gig day. My main concern is losing my amps and cabs given that we cover a wide variety of artists and styles.

Other than another HX Stomp, what do you use as a backup? I was considering the Boss IR-2 given the price tag, small form factor, variety of amps/cabs and Boss reliability. I understand I should download other third party IRs. Also considering an Iridium but seems like the IR-2 has better features.

General Questions/Discussion HELIX VS ….

Hoping I don’t get crucified…the band and I have decided to get back together for our 20 year album release reunion. I dusted off my Les Paul and my POD XT LIVE. Which still sounds amazing btw. I’ve been playing catch up with all the modern day technology and also using Neural DSP etc to relearn songs at home. I’m a huge Stef Carpenter fan and saw that on his rig rundown he’s using the Helix and naturally as a fan and me being Familiar with Line 6 capabilities I wanna purchase the Helix stadium. However after doing some more research I’m seeing this Quad Cortex thing pop up. I also noticed that almost EVERY band is using it. I’ve been getting some killer tones with the Neural DSP plug ins that I’d love to utilize for a live setting so I guess my questions are Helix or Quad Cortex? Will I be able to use/save my Neural DSP presets with the helix? Thanks for reading.

General Questions/Discussion Stadium XL, how is the wifi editing on a Mac?

I currently have a Boss GX-100, while I love the sounds I get from it, it has a tendency to lock up when connected via USB and Bluetooth response is terrible. I absolutely hate menu diving on the pedal itself to make minor tweaks, so bug free and reliable computer interface (not phone or tablet) is KEY to me getting along with it.

So, connected via wifi, does the adjustment feel near real time? Is the Mac version of the application (I have a M4 Mini) relatively bug free and user friendly?

The computer interface to me is just as important as sound. If something sounds amazing but is insanely frustrating to operate, it wont matter, I wont use it. And if I have to break my back bending over to dive through silly menus with a floor unit to make a minor tweak, I wont use it. I play and record with the computer in front of me, and the ability to easily adjust settings from my computer is important.

General Questions/Discussion early thoughts on Helix Stadium Floor (have gigged the others) - solo and duo use

Still in the early honeymoon phase so take that with a salt lick. Over the last few years, I've migrated to a lot of solo and duo gigs, playing acoustic, electric, dobro, and singing. The duos are backing female vocalists. I also do band gigs on electric, but I picked up HSF to scratch a specific itch, and so far so good.

On a solo gig, I need guitar and dobro processed and sent to either a PA system or a powered cab. Most every venue around here is roll your own, and as a not-young-man I want efficiency and reasonable weight. My minimum setup has been a pedal board with two key effects (Harmonious Monk for dobro, chorus occasionally for guitar), then some eq, compression, and an IR pedal (for speaker, not guitar IR) so I can run some dirt if I want. Was using either EV ZLX powered cabs or more recently QSC CB10 or Evolve 30M. Both have 2 channel mixers (Evolve has more) and some basic eq, so I'd run vocal mic direct, pedal board into the other channel. And it sounded good. But not great, and I really want a bit of delay and some good dynamic processing so I started looking at other options.

First was the last step in the chain - PA cabs in general, and after a lot of research and wrangling, I finally bit the bullet and picked up an RCF NX910a cab. It is...sublime. Plywood trumps Tupperware every day of the week. BUT, being a true old-school cab, it has one input, one knob, no phone app (actually that kinda is a feature rather than a bug at this point).

Great, so now how to get signal to it. Well, I could break out the CQ18T and use that - but is it one more box to haul, one more app to mess with. What if I could get something that would handle different flavors of guitar and vocals? HSF ftw. Now I owned QC and that could do it - also owned TMP and that could do it - but it had some limitations, particularly for mixing. HSF ftw with the Matrix mixer. I can put guitar (or dobro or acoustic) into instrument, mic into mic, get the effects I want, then easily mix them on the Matrix and send one or two xlrs out depending if I'm mono or stereo.

What about the duo gigs? Well, you can use a return for that second mic but you need to get the mic signal up to line level. Rolls MP13 does the trick. What if I want to get spacey with my Microcosm? You can use the other return. And my small pedal board with the Microcosm has a Sol supply so I can power the MP13 at 15v. Win.

I also sometimes use a Push 3 to loop guitar and play drum/key parts live. Return works for that as well. And I can route my guitar out the 1/4" jacks into the Push, then come back into the return and route that return direct to the XLR (so no internal feedback loop). Push volume control handles that signal level.

What if I want to use everything (including the Microcosm in stereo)? Well, then I run out of physical inputs. A Stadium XL would fix that, but I prefer the smaller form factor. And besides once I get to a certain number of signals I'd rather bring the CQ18T - right tool for the right job.

Did take some work to get the presets right, and I'm still tweaking and dialing things in but so far so good. Oh, and it sounds great. I've never been a Line6 fanboy but I have to say the amp models sound and feel quite good here and the harmonic trem, while not up to my Harmonious Monk, it close enough to make the cut.

And, just built out some stereo versions of the solo and duo presets, run them through a pair of NX910a. Holy crap. Since one of my duos has gigs at places where I need to bring L/R main anyway, no downside running stereo as I'm already hauling the gear.

The experiment continues. If anyone wants an example preset I can post a link. They're not rocket surgeon brilliant, but they do something that is beyond the usual guitar-only applications.

General Questions/Discussion Just got my new 9 year old helix LT

Post image
155 Upvotes

I've been wondering about multifx and the helix LT is on sale at the moment in the UK so thought I would pick one up. I have a regularly changing pedalboard of decent pedals.. and have generally been happy, albeit sometimes frustrated when pedals don't play well together. However, after only a few hours, this thing has me thinking.. am I a multifx guy now?? I have the helix routed with an FX loop back to my amp so I can use my amp gain channel, with the amp foot switch routed into the helix switch of my choice.. amazing! I threw a Timmy style gain on top of my amp gain, and a room reverb, and I'm already blown away! Everything just works with each other and I now have infinite possibilities, without having to rejig my board. It is so easy to use too! I've not been bothered to even delve into what my ehx oceans abyss can do as it's so complex and quite unintuitive. But after a couple of hours with the helix I know I'm gonna have great fun. Oh dear..

General Questions/Discussion Customtone preset with Santana tones, using Cali IV Lead

Helrig view

I'm assuming the creator gets these via amp choice and EQ ( that amp has more than the usual amount of EQ options and his parametric EQ choices are interesting. What's your take on how this preset achieves the tone? I could see it being useful beyond the Santana world of songs.
He only used one of the two DSP paths.

General Questions/Discussion Headphones for helix

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for headphones for my Line 6 Helix LT, mainly to build and fine-tune presets: amp models, cab simulations, IRs and EQ.

My priority is having a reliable reference for tones I'll eventually use through a PA at rehearsals and gigs, rather than simply making my guitar sound pleasing through headphones. I understand that headphones cannot perfectly reproduce a PA, and that I'll still need to check my presets at performance volume.

I'm looking for:

- Wired, passive, over-ear headphones, without built-in DSP or processing.

- A reasonably neutral sound, without exaggerated bass.

- Accurate mids and highs, so I can identify harshness, fizz and unwanted resonances.

- Something I can connect directly to the Helix LT's headphone output.

My budget is ideally €80–100, and I'm considering buying used. These are the offers I've found in Italy:

- Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: €70

- Sennheiser HD560S: €100

- Sennheiser HD599: €80–90

The HD600 are outside my budget.

I mainly play rock and hard rock. I've read conflicting opinions: some Helix users love the M50x, while others find them too coloured for building guitar tones. The HD560S seem promising, but I'd like to hear from guitarists who actually use them with a modeler.

My main questions are:

  1. Between the M50x and HD560S, which would you choose at these prices? Is the extra €30 worthwhile for my purpose?

  2. If you build presets using either of them, how well do those presets translate to a PA or FRFR speaker? Do you usually need small adjustments or substantial EQ changes?

  3. Would you recommend another model around this budget, including used options?

Thanks!
