General Questions/Discussion HELIX VS ….

Hoping I don’t get crucified…the band and I have decided to get back together for our 20 year album release reunion. I dusted off my Les Paul and my POD XT LIVE. Which still sounds amazing btw. I’ve been playing catch up with all the modern day technology and also using Neural DSP etc to relearn songs at home. I’m a huge Stef Carpenter fan and saw that on his rig rundown he’s using the Helix and naturally as a fan and me being Familiar with Line 6 capabilities I wanna purchase the Helix stadium. However after doing some more research I’m seeing this Quad Cortex thing pop up. I also noticed that almost EVERY band is using it. I’ve been getting some killer tones with the Neural DSP plug ins that I’d love to utilize for a live setting so I guess my questions are Helix or Quad Cortex? Will I be able to use/save my Neural DSP presets with the helix? Thanks for reading.

Both are great, both have very different workflows. Though keep in mind technically the quad cortex is considered “last gen” hardware as it came out in the middle of the helix floors life cycle.

Imho it depends on what ecosystem you want to work with long-term and what features you need. I have seen a lot of bands, small and large, using Quad Cortex and/or Helix systems or something completely different and they all sound fine. If you like your Neural DSP stuff, you might be better off getting a QC. I don't believe presets are interchangeable.

I'd say pick one and go. You'll need to learn the work flow either way.

Here is my general breakdown as of today

  1. Helix LT best bang for your buck Modeller on the market! but if your into multi amping DSP is somewhat limited. New cost ~$800.
  2. Quad Cortex: most powerful and probably most accurate behind only Fractal. can get a new one for ~$1600
  3. Fractal Axe FX III : King of the Modellers, best in business also most expensive! ~3k+ for a setup with footswitches.
  4. Helix Stadium : a little less powerful soundwise than quad cortex and (much less than fractal) but lots of functionality. Newer and thus much more unstable/buggy. ~$2k+

I love my Helix LT, didn't like the Stadium, If I were to buy something new today in the ~2k budget range I would try out the Quad Cortex and a good expression pedal. but Under 1k the LT is gold.

I moved from a QC to a stadium. I honestly can't tell a big difference in sound. As far as I can tell they're about equal. Stadium has better effects and stomps in general, though there are some effects from QC I hope will make it to Stadium. Chiefly more vocal chain effects.

The killer app though and the reason I made the move is showcase. It's incredible. Not having a have a laptop on stage to run backing tracks or automate patch changes is a fucking game changer. It definitely needs more features and I'm hoping it'll grow in future updates. Haven't experienced a single bug though. Not sure what you mean by unstable.

Curious, what made you not like the Stadium? I was considering this as a natural upgrade from my Helix Floor.

I also bought a stadium when it released and returned it. I own two helix LT's and I could not hear any difference in the way they sound. Sure the extra dsp is cool and touch screen ooh ahh and all that but there was literally no difference in the way the two sounded. I always said what difference does a touch screen and splash graphics matter if I'm the only one that can see them on the stage. All that matters to everyone else is how it sounds. I couldn't justify the price difference for literally no difference in sound. If you need the dsp that badly then imo it's better to buy two LT's than one stadium. You will get double the switches, double the combos and at only half the price. The best part is that they will sound EXACTLY the same as the more expensive stadium.

So tldr if you care about the touch screen and the bells and whistles of colorful pictures and flashy icons then by all means pay for the stadium but if the sound is what matters to you and the people hearing you, then just go with two LT's and double your dsp and switches. You can daisy chain them together no problem.

Were you comparing the same amp models? Because yeah, those sound the same by design. They explictly stated that. But if you mean that the Agoura amps sound identical to their last gen counterparts then I can understand your point

My Helix LT is my all in one guitar and bass rig. I use it as my studio USB interface and I process vocals with it. And I’ve had it less than a year so I still have some exploring to do.

I just got a quad cortex mini last week. As a former AxeFX III user just looking for a more simplified portable unit, I couldn't be happier.

I was an old school Line 6 user as well. I was considering the Helix Stadium, but it's just too bulky for my use case. That and it seems like there are still unresolved software issues (although I'm sure they will get that ironed out). I'll be very interested to see what the next small form factor line 6 device offers.

I highly recommend checking out the POD GO. It uses the same software as the Helix and the only limitation is that you can only run a set amount of effects and one amp at once which is perfectly fine for 90% of guitarists. It has pretty much all the amps and effects from the helix and they are absolutely identical in sound. Much cheaper than the Helix

They're all good, they're all the same, and once you get in a band context you just about can't hear the difference between all of them. This will be unpopular but anything will work. I picked up a helix floor recently when the prices dropped with the stadium release and frankly I didn't like it. And I'm a long time HX Effects owner. Bottom line - whichever you must vibe with, be it QC, stadium, og floor, pod go, hx effects into an amp, pocketmaster, they'll all work. Whichever one you like the interface on the most is the one for you.

I own both the Stadium and the QC, here are my thoughts:

Stadium for utility and very specific tone control
QC for raw tone

Do you like effects? Stadium
Do you not use a ton of effects and rely mostly on amp tone with some EQ/Comp? QC

You can get fantastic tones out of both, with the QC being slightly more realistic and less “digital” sounding (but seriously not by much, and in a mix, its not noticeable)

I currently use my QC as my guitar rig, and the Stadium as my other guitar players rig with preset automation and for backing/clicks.

I have a ton of fun using both, and both are easy to get the hang of. The software for both works great.

The Stadium has a ton of great effects, routing options, and very very intricate tonal abilities. Line 6 models down to a component level (capacitors, transistors, etc) for their tech. So you get a ton more control. The EQ’s and Gains on the amp act as you would expect them to.

The QC is a little more raw. Adjusting the EQ’s on amp blocks doesn’t always have the desired effect. This is primarily because the models on the QC are captured of amps at their specific settings.

I talk these products all day for my job, and this comment may not be very clear (I’m making breakfast rn and not thinking too hard about this), but feel free to reply to this or dm me with any questions. I love talking them both.

HX Stomp for effects and Tonex One for amps? Might be a good option. I've just bought a Stomp XL and I think the Tonex will be a great addition to the board, will likely run it amp-only, into an IR in the Stomp and then wet FX.

I have a Dyna Comp and TS9 that I'll run in front of the Tonex. That's the idea at this stage. Currently running the DC and TS9 onto the Stomp XL and pretty happy.

I just moved from QC to Stadium. The form factor of the QC with my feet didn't work great, Stadium XL is doing much better. The warp feature is amazing. I've got a great sound in about ten seconds, no messing about.

The QC is a great unit, but so is the Stadium. I think if you keep looking you'll always find people who get amazing results out of everything, the question is what works for you. Buy the one that appeals and learn it. Don't bother looking for anything else unless there's a really good reason (like form factor)

Are we talking Stadium of OG Helix? I think Quad Cortex beats both, but especially if you're talking about OG Helix it's a no brainer. The touch screen workflow is everything.

Stadium has too many bugs. I've owned multiple units that have bricked on me and left me high and dry before a gig. Will never own a L6 product ever again due to that. And the QC size is so convenient and the capture tech is way better. I also appreciate how you don't need a computer with the QC, but you do with the Stadium. It's 2026, there should be no need for a computer these days. Then you get plug in compatibility, so to know you can get the same sounds as big name artists with their own hand tweaked settings is pretty cool to say.

I have Helix, Axe FXIII, Profiler, all 3 in rack form. Like any other tool, the one you learn will be the one you use the most therefore the best one.

75% of the time I use the Profiler because my music is not effect heavy and searching and loading sounds is quick easy. Creating my own tones is not something I am interested in right now.

The Axe FX impresses me every time I use it. It has the best modern tones I have heard and can make sounds similar to synthesizers. This is where the real value is as classic tones sound the same to me in any other model.

The Helix is low cost and can do about 90% of what the Axe FX can do. And for $100 you get the computer version to simplify things in a studio.

Once Neural has a rack version, Ill get that too.

Can’t really lose.

I like helix for workflow.

They all sound good. But how much work is it to get the sound out of it? In the end you have to work the machinery to make good things happen.

darkglass anagram seems to be the highest tier right now for amp sounds in a hardware box. Fractal beats it for triple the price for the wider range of effects it comes with.

despite that all the youtubers are recommending anagram/headrush prime for gigging or headrush flex prime if you're just home

As I understand it, at this point in technology, you’re buying sound quality in tiers. Helix, QC, etc are all in the upper tier. “Pro” level, if you wish.

The big difference is that for the most part, the Helix is self-contained. All the sounds you can imagine are in the box. The fact is, if you have the time and inclination, it’s all there.

The QC is being utilized as an IR platform. This allows artists to bring in studio-identical tones for live performances. It’s just CTL+C CTL+V and you’re done. Wanna sound like this? Copy paste play. Yes, the basic building blocks are there for modeling, but that’s not the focus of the kit.

Yes, the Helix can do IR too, but that was years later as an added update. QC does it natively.

The big question is how do you want to approach live performance?

I’m big on tone. With the neural dsp I was able to create a tone that’s big on low end but still allows the high notes to shine perfectly without it sounding like noise. I was also able to create some effects. So I’d definitely love a copy and paste option

Added update maybe, but if the functionality is there now you should compare what each does now. Saying it doesn’t count bc it came later is a weird moving if the goalposts. Lots of products v1 had issues but v3 has a ton of updates and new Capabilities making it hugely better. Some people will still say it sucks bc they remember v1 when everything they disliked is gone
