August 2025 Freetalk Fridays
Hi Everyone, welcome to the long series of weekly Greytalk posts. You can literally ask about anything related to greyhounds, no matter how basic or complex. Here are the rules:
- Nothing illegal or extremely objectionable.
- No abuse. You can ask for more information, you can explain why you don't like something, but you can't abuse the poster.
- Don't take medical advice from strangers on the internet without consulting your vet!
- The rest of the Greyddit Rules still apply.
If you think of more ideas, PM the mods .

My sweet Lemon was just diagnosed with Axial Osteosarcoma - has this happened to anyone else?
Hi all - wanted to ask about something rather devastating. About a month ago I noticed a small lump I though was growing under my sweet girl, Lemon's, gums. Our vet thought it was an abscess so we scheduled an ECG (small heart murmur) before the dental opp. However the cardiologist was quite concerned and ended up calling in an oncologist during the ECG appt.
The oncologist originally thought Lemon may have oral melanoma or some other sarcoma. However after a fine-needle aspiration and staining, she now believes it is axial osteosarcoma. We are awaiting final lab confirmation.
I've searched all over but axial osteo in greyhounds seems extremely rare. Unfortunately this growth has gone from undetectable to significant in a matter of weeks, and I don't know how long Lemon has left. The vet said 3-6 months but at the rate of growth, I'm afraid it could be sooner.
Has anyone ever experienced this? Any advice?
Thank you in advance

Tough month for Lucifer
Luce was diagnosed with SLO earlier this month. Two of his nails broke and got removed, a few others may shed in the next few weeks. He's doing fine for now, we're hoping treatment is effective over the next few weeks/months.
And then 10 days later he contracted what we think is a UTI! The antibiotic he was prescribed seemed to work fast, and he appears to be close to normal now after a tiring weekend of washing every area rug I own and going outside every 3 hours 🙄 hoping it is just a UTI and not anything worse lurking.
Send hugs for large boye.
First pic is what I have been calling "poppin pills with puppy goose"

Advice New owner... dealing with stairs?
Hi everyone, brand new greyhound owner here (we brought home beautiful Rose on the weekend) and we're trying to figure out all the things we didn't know.
We are stupid about a lot of stuff, so please be gentle!
We have a set of steps leading up to our apartment that she really seems to be having trouble with. We're trying training with chicken, etc and it's only been a few days...but I could use some advice.
There are 7 steps, total height about 1.3m.
Do some greys just not get stairs?
Are they too steep?
Should I put a ramp here instead?
Is it too soon to know?
Any other ideas?
Thank you!
🙏

Cinders is feeling very sorry for herself
Cinders cut her paw on a walk over the weekend. Unfortunately, it ended up getting infected and she couldn’t put any weight on it, so she’s had to have antibiotics and anti inflammatories.
On the plus side, her bandage matches her outfit!
Thankfully, she’s feeling a lot better already and can now get up and down the stairs herself again. I was getting such a workout having to carry her 🤣

Dog's gotten too smart for Greenie Pills
Okay, my pup is past her snack fiend phase and no longer eats the Greenie Pills for her medication. What do y'all do?
PS, peanut butter no longer works.
Edit: thanks for the responses. I'm trying to give the snout heartworm meds, a large capsule that has to be broken up. I'm afraid that all the things like cream cheese will do is what peanut butter does...a lick the applicable parts while the med covered in goo stays on the spoon or plops on my floor. Will put in Babybel and get back.
Edit 2: Babybel worked like a charm.

He's able to chew now!
Valor had some extractions before he came to us. It's been the better part of a year and he's finally able to chomp down a pig's ear! Very awkwardly but he loved it!
Side note: sardines for his coat. Looking fine, Valor. Looking fine.

Advice Very fearful Greyhound
I don't know where to start. Please bear with me....
I love Greyhounds ❤️.
My current one is the third one I've rescued. The previous two rescues were challenging, particularly the second one I got who was 14 months old when adopted and after her settling in period I discovered she had severe separation anxiety. I didn't take a holiday in the first 2 years with her !! It took a long time, but we got there eventually, with lotssssss of patience and love. I absolutely adored her, we had such a bond. Sadly after only 3 years together, she died last year from aggressive osteosarcoma, and it was a devastating loss.
I felt fairly experienced with greyhounds until I got my most recent one. She is nearly 5 and had a short racing career, like 8 or so races. Her outdoor fear is HUGE. I know how sensitive the breed is and idiosyncratic!!
She is particularly scared of noise, bicycles, scooters, kids. Basically she is afraid of sudden movement + noise. Unpredictability scares her. She is also very cat reactive. I tried to drive her to quiet locations, because if she's not triggered, shes sort of ok, and she likes paddling in water. She will hop in the car willingly, but she is TERRIFIED when the car moves. She vibrates with fear. So I cant drive her anywhere. I have an enclosed garden, which she enjoys most of the time, but occasionally cats appear, or screaming kids are near. Its all gotten so difficult to manage.
I have her almost 10 months now and despite doing all the things I know I'm supposed to do, go slowly, unforced, love + patience etc..etc.. nothing has changed. I know they take time, but 10 months of daily challenge is taking its toll on me, it's just her and me at home. She doesn't really seek companionship, shes not a velcro dog, she stays on her own all the time. She accepts + likes petting in her own bed, but thats it. She does sometimes sleep in my room, if sje chooses, on her own bed. I let her go where she'd like to be, to give her a choice. She had resource guarding of space initially, which terrified me, but I worked through it slowly and it's more or less gone now. Proud of that ! She does have sleep startle.
Its just a lot and I often feel like I have a silent lodger rather than a companion. Its not her fault, or mine but its heartbreaking.
The vet had suggested meds, but I was reluctant because I believed she just needed time and love, which she absolutely gets. I took her to another veterinary surgeon who practices veterinary homeopathy. She has had some homeopathic remedies, but nothing is helping. I am totally exhausted and burned out from managing her fear and hypervigilance. I feel heartbroken for her and for me. This is the complete opposite of what I hoped our companionship would be. I've never had such a reactive dog. Its just me and her at home. I feel hopeless about it now and sooooo drained from it all.
Maybe shes in the wrong environment. But we've bonded. Maybe she needs a companion dog, but Im not really in a position for a second dog. I just keep hoping it will improve and now Im barely able to deal with it.
Maybe meds are the answer? Any advice?
BIG SIGH

A reminder to hide your extremely comfortable pregnancy pillow from your hound
Honestly she’ll probably get it as a new addition to her dog bed in about 8 weeks after I give birth 😂
