Dog's gotten too smart for Greenie Pills
Okay, my pup is past her snack fiend phase and no longer eats the Greenie Pills for her medication. What do y'all do?
PS, peanut butter no longer works.
Edit: thanks for the responses. I'm trying to give the snout heartworm meds, a large capsule that has to be broken up. I'm afraid that all the things like cream cheese will do is what peanut butter does...a lick the applicable parts while the med covered in goo stays on the spoon or plops on my floor. Will put in Babybel and get back.
Edit 2: Babybel worked like a charm.

My boy has heart disease and is on a low sodium diet, so our options are limited. What helped the most was getting the pills made at a compounding pharmacy so they are way smaller than the chewables (and way cheaper, too! Lucky break!). We’re on American cheese right now. A quarter of a slice hides both pills, and isn’t too much salt. It’s not ideal, but pill pockets, wet food, low-sodium peanut butter, lunch meat, Greek yogurt, strawberries, eggs, and whipped cream either didn’t work or stopped working once he discovered the pills inside. The trick for him was finding something he didn’t feel compelled to chew. A tiny square of cheese folded into a little triangle (pills in the middle, like a pill pierogi) goes right down his gullet without a single thought.
I’ll be returning to this thread should he lose his trust in the cheese. 🫡 (The shrimp pockets are genius!)

We used wafer thin ham / chicken / beef etc. Give them decoy ham bits, and then wrap the pill in multiple layers of ham like a little parcel. We found if we wrapped first our dog would smell the medication smell on the decoy ham bits (vet did explain paracetamol tastes disgusting). If you wrap last, he would often not notice until it was down the hatch. Sometimes we would follow with more decoy ham as a reward lol

Open their mouth, push the pill all the way to the back and then close their mouth and massage their throat while tilting their nose up

My senior is on daily meds, we’ve discovered Pill Wrap works the most consistently for us! Our boy is great at eating around the pill if we try to hide it in some chicken or something. This actually sticks to the pill. He likes the peanut butter flavour. Every now and then we have to change it up by throwing some sardines in there with it.

Our go to was babybel cheese. I would cut it in half, slice a slit, slide the pill 💊 in and cover with a dollop of peanut butter. He thought it was a special treat. I have had dogs who were good with hot dogs, mayonnaise, but for him this was the only way 😉😃

Does she enjoy catching treats you throw at her?
I get a piece of bread and roll it into little balls. She enthusiastically catches them out of the air. Once she builds a cadence, I throw the ball with a pill inside it and she doesn't notice. 100% success so far.

Can you crush it up and put it in her food? Our hound figured out every trick in the book. Finally in exasperation we just dumped the powder from inside the capsule into his regular food and he eats it like a champ. Couldn’t believe it actually worked.

Liverwurst has worked, as well as some others. But sometimes you just have to push it in.

My dog has IBD so we can’t do any animal proteins. He’s also on many tablets, twice a day.
Initially squishy white bread worked really well, and vegan marshmallows. Banana chunks worked a bit but got expensive and messy. For a short time we made our own pill pockets out of his kibble. But now we’ve had to move to a wet version of his specific hydrolysed food. We hide them in a blob of food which he is happy to inhale without licking or chewing.

I make a sandwich with treats.
Smacko broken up as the 'bread', then peanut butter with a pill and the smacko bread lid on top.

Grab a frozen shrimp, defrost it in water for like 10 minutes, filet the back of the shrimp (not all the way through) and put the pill inside. Once my wife discovered this, we stopped with all the other tricks. The dog salivates when she hears pills now. She’s been on a mild steroid every other night and never fails. Shrimp pockets.
We tried cheese or cream cheese but our dog has IBD so dairy is to be avoided after diagnosis.
