My sweet Lemon was just diagnosed with Axial Osteosarcoma - has this happened to anyone else?

Post image

Hi all - wanted to ask about something rather devastating. About a month ago I noticed a small lump I though was growing under my sweet girl, Lemon's, gums. Our vet thought it was an abscess so we scheduled an ECG (small heart murmur) before the dental opp. However the cardiologist was quite concerned and ended up calling in an oncologist during the ECG appt.

The oncologist originally thought Lemon may have oral melanoma or some other sarcoma. However after a fine-needle aspiration and staining, she now believes it is axial osteosarcoma. We are awaiting final lab confirmation.

I've searched all over but axial osteo in greyhounds seems extremely rare. Unfortunately this growth has gone from undetectable to significant in a matter of weeks, and I don't know how long Lemon has left. The vet said 3-6 months but at the rate of growth, I'm afraid it could be sooner.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Any advice?

Thank you in advance

Poor guy. We’re going through it as well. My girl just had a clean bill of health, and a small limp a week later turned out to be osteosarcoma. Just got home from the vet hospital and Monday we are doing amputation.

Maybe the Yale vaccine study could help in tandem with chemo? Either way praying for best case scenarios for us both. ::huggs::

Im so sorry you're going through this too, and I hope the amputation goes well!

Our oncologist made it somewhat clear that with the location of the tumor pushing into the mouth, the eye and even the brain, palliative is the only options now :( Just trying to figure out what that timeline looks like

Thank you πŸ™πŸ» try to stay proactive with the pain for now, not sure what they gave you, but I have 3 meds and journal what time each dose is given to stay ahead of the pain. Deepest condolences again from my pack and I.

I’m so sorry to hear this. Our dog had another tumor type (my non hound) who had a stage 3 tumor that was pushing into her brain/eye. We did radiation and were supposed to do a recheck at 6 months but we had to put her down at 5 months. I’m not sure if that helps but what they give for timeline is always averages and sadly she was under it. She did have a wonderful 5 months up until a few days before we put her down. I still look at videos of her living her best life those last few months we gave her.

Lost Amigo to osteosarcoma earlier this year. He broke his leg in 2025, we did amp and chemo. Really sorry you and sweet Lemon are going through this. It really sucks πŸ’”
