Welcome back to r/Whippets!

Fellow Whippet lovers,

Welcome back! After 3 years of the former mod making this sub private, I am happy to say that it is finally open again. I am looking forward to growing the community again with discussions, questions, experiences and photos of our favorite pups. Any suggestions for improvements to the sub, let me know.

I myself have a 6 year old whippet named Rocket and live in Southern California .. He was my first dog I've ever had and don't ever see myself having another dog breed. Like most of us, I take him everywhere with me (other than work) as he loves car rides and walks. Both my wife and myself have posted pictures of him on here before so we look forward to sharing.

Feel free to share about yourself and your pup!

Do whippets have the most expressive ears of any dog?!

• Upvotes

I’ve got a 15 week old pup (first whippet) and the multitude of ear positions never cease to amaze me! 😍

Whippet Size Question

My boy is 5 months old and weighs 12kg, is this big for a Whippet? I think he’s going to be a Whoppet😂

EDIT: He’s 52cm/20.5 inches to the withers.

Did you get your whippet a whippet?

Been talking lately about the fact we would love another whippet for our whippet, although our current work schedule wouldn’t allow for a new puppy right now. Did you get your whippet a whippet and how did things go, did your older whippet love/hate it?

Working vs show whippets

My family has found a gorgeous whippet pup that we’re super keen to go and view. The breeder has said that the parents are both from working lines but the mum has never worked. Should this make us nervous about what we could be getting ourselves in to?!

How much difference is there between working and show characteristics?

For context, we’re happy to do lots of exercise and mental stimulation but I don’t want a wired dog that will never settle. We’ve had a working cocker spaniel before and she had some serious energy. I’ve done lots of research about the breed but would love to hear some real life experiences.

Thanks!

Anyone else got a young/puppy looking adult whippet?

Stopped by a lady today who couldn’t believe my dog was 5. My dog doesn’t really look like regular whippets, she’s very small and has a puppy looking face. Makes sense because she’s the youngest of the litter. Anyone else got an adult whippet that looks a lot younger?

Moderate-chew treat recs

Howdy! I’m looking for a “happy medium” of a treat for my whippet. US-based

Looking for something that doesn’t last quite as long as a bully stick or rawhide-free bone. BUT does last longer than some of the collagen chews out there…because I swear she INHALES those in 5 minutes 🫣

Basically I’d love something I can give her when I can tell she’s bored (ex: bad weather means less outside play time and walks, but I don’t have time at the moment to set up a snuffle mat) that are a little more high-value than the bully sticks she always has available to her

She DOESN’T like peanut butter or other sweet treats. Beef, chicken, duck, turkey are all great

Tell me what your whippers enjoy!!

4 month old pup refusing to go toilet outside when raining

She'd just woken up from her night sleep so I knew she had plenty in the tank. I took her out and waited with her in 5-10 minute blocks, covered the clothesline with a tarp so she had cover, and put her jacket on so she wouldn't be as cold.

Within a few minutes of being inside she peed. I took her back out. Nothing. Came back in. She poos. I take her back out. Nothing. Come back in. She wees again.

She's usually not too bad if it's light rain, but it's really pouring down today. Is it just a matter of getting accustomed to heavy rain? We were under cover but the ground was quite wet

Are whippets ever 100% safe with cats (and low gates)?

I'm thinking about getting a whippet, and everything about them seems perfect, apart from the fact that I have 2 young cats.

I know that if a puppy grew up with the cats they would be fine together in the house, but I'm worried that if they were in the garden and the cats ran, that the whippet might chase and kill them purely on instinct.

I have a German shorthaired pointer who can't help but chase the cats sometimes when they run, but he knows not to harm them as he's a gundog, not a hound.

Please be honest. Would you ever trust a whippet to be left outside, unsupervised, with cats around?

Also, we have 6ft fences all.around the garden but only a standard low farm gate. Do you think a whippet would jump over the gate and escape?

UPDATE: Thank you everyone for your replies. I've decided a whippet is not the right breed for my situation.🥲

Live alone. Work hybrid. Is it a good idea for me to get a Whippet?

I recently posted this same question on the Greyhound forum, but I am also considering a Whippet as well. Here is my situation…

This past January, I had a Maltipoo who passed away due to old age. He was my best friend and I got him when I was 16, and I’m now 30.

I am now seeking another best friend to care for. I miss having a dog. Now, my circumstances are a little different than they were with my Maltipoo. Here are my living conditions…

I live alone in a 1100sqft apartment. I work hybrid, I’m in the office 2 days out of the week. When I’m in office, it’s a typical 9-5.

I’m specifically seeking out a Whippet because I know that they’re lower maintenance dogs, especially compared to Maltipoos. I feel like it’s what I’m looking for.

What are your honest thoughts on all this? Am I good fit to take care of a new Whippet?
