Tough month for Lucifer
Luce was diagnosed with SLO earlier this month. Two of his nails broke and got removed, a few others may shed in the next few weeks. He's doing fine for now, we're hoping treatment is effective over the next few weeks/months.
And then 10 days later he contracted what we think is a UTI! The antibiotic he was prescribed seemed to work fast, and he appears to be close to normal now after a tiring weekend of washing every area rug I own and going outside every 3 hours 🙄 hoping it is just a UTI and not anything worse lurking.
Send hugs for large boye.
First pic is what I have been calling "poppin pills with puppy goose"

Here’s some perfectly normal peanut butter on a spoon! It’s not full of either eepy pills or antibiotics! 🤣🤣 I hope he gets better fast ❤️

I had to look it up.
"In a canine health context, SLO stands for Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy. It is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease that specifically targets the quick and bed of a dog's claws."
Lucifer is at least lucky enough to have such devoted caretaker. By the look in his eyes, he knows this.

I always let Tucker chase his peanut butter pills with a ramekin of milk…. Spoiled… sending all the good vibes to Lucifer.

We went the Stack route with SLO (chlorpheniramine + prednisone vs. antibiotics). Coupled with flax oil and niacinamide, the nails are much better. The pred taper is pretty abrupt, and I think the long-term use of antibiotics is best avoided, hence the prednisone. We're down to 5 mg pred every other day, and we're now down to half that amount half the time, 5 mg the other half the time, and then half a tablet of chlorpheniramine from Walgreens, then the supplements (flax + niacinamide).

Interesting to hear. Our vet started him on a low dose of pred, only 5mg per day right now (an info sheet we got indicated a starting dose of 100+mg/day is normal...). Granted so far only 4 maybe 5 nails are showing signs of deterioration, maybe the vet is hoping if we caught it before it got bad it'll slow down without an aggressive prednisone schedule...? 🤷 the guy is supposed to be a grey specialist, I want to trust him...
We are also doing fish oil and vitamin E supplements.

Hugs to Luce and you! My noodle has had UTIs, it’s rough.
