Science, Tech & Medicine Following Ukraine’s attack on Yandex’s data centers, Russian bot activity across American platforms appears to have declined significantly. A Swedish engineer rans tests by posting pro-H-1B visa content and observed no anti-Indian hate in response.

Is the Russian bot in the white house with US?

10

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

Do Russian Bots make policy decisions?

16

u/Quirky_Lemon_6942 1d ago

You tell us about it. Green card/ H1B program suspension order was passed by whom? Who is deporting indian citizens in chains out of US?

-3

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

If you’re alleging that American policy is being shaped by racism and skin colour, by all means, ask Canadians and Europeans, who feel even more fucked over than we do.

Also, you have to realize that perpetuating anti-Indian hate on X affects Americans of Indian origin, too, regardless of how many generations their families have lived in the United States.

16

u/EruIluvatar_Sym 1d ago

While the optics are worse where it's Europe or Canada, India has been hit worse by the policies.

-1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

Canada is getting cooked atleast when it comes to policy way more than we are. Europe is getting cooked on NATO and Ukraine. This administration pulled back funding for Ukraine, which put massive fiscal pressure on the EU.

11

u/EruIluvatar_Sym 1d ago

Well, we're getting cooked with tariffs + our diaspora unable to even get appointments at the embassy.

1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

I mean we are also structurally at a disadvantage in any regime that caps anything. Look at special talent visas which were capped and Indians have insanely long wait times for.

I know an Argentinian Girl who got hers in Year 1. She fkng works in Marketing, in a role any American can fill straight out of college.

5

u/EruIluvatar_Sym 1d ago

I have no issues with the country cap on the GC. Almost every visa category has no appointments specifically for India. Even without the 39 or the 75 country ban.

31

u/truthspitter01 1d ago

You clearly have no idea about the on ground reality, is russian bot also prompting US officials to be so anti indians stances?

19

u/EruIluvatar_Sym 1d ago

I think there's truth to both. Bots do a lot of online amplification.

6

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

I’m talking about generic anti-Indian hate online. Calling Indians third-world scammers who shit on the streets, fuck animals, and want to steal American jobs, and are systematically destroying American society. That’s anti-Indian hate.

Imposing tariffs, or even Navarro calling us the “Maharaja of Tariffs,” is policy.

There’s a clear distinction between anti-Indian racism and criticism of government policy.

They’re being harsh on Canadians, too. Fucking hell, we haven’t even received half the stick in the media that Canada gets on a daily basis by US Officials. That doesn’t mean they’re being racist or anti-Canadian. That’s policy.

11

u/truthspitter01 1d ago

False. The MAGA warriors on the ground absolutely contribute to fuelling anti-Indian hatred. While officials may refrain from making such statements publicly, their political allies and prominent figures often voice these sentiments openly. The treatment of Canadians is different because it lacks the same racial dimension that makes anti-Indian hatred easier to fuel. If race were a factor in how Canadians were perceived and treated, I have little doubt we'd see a similar pattern there too.

As for Russia, it may have its share of anti-Indian sentiment, but I doubt it's any more widespread than in the US, and it's arguably comparable to what you'd find in other European countries at most. Besides, India can hardly afford to be openly hostile towards Russia when it has been one of India's most dependable partners among the major powers, particularly in defence and strategic affairs especially when don't share good relation with other big nations at this moment.

2

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

For one, real conservative influencers feed off the engagement their content generates. Many mistake these bots for actual people and end up amplifying and perpetuating the same hateful rhetoric.

Two, not all anti-Indian hate or racism comes from bots. Bo French demonstrated that with his post about the kids at a UT Austin game. These are conservatives who are running for office, who are made to believe spewing Anti-Indian hate will get them votes.

If you think racism is exclusively about skin color, then I feel for you. Canadians and Mexicans are among the first groups that face prejudice and have negative stereotypes projected onto them. Racism and xenophobia aren't limited to skin color.

I never claimed Russia harbors anti-Indian sentiment. That isn't even the argument. The hypothesis is that Russian bot networks could amplify anti-Indian sentiment to deepen divisions between India and the United States. The wider that divide becomes, the more room there is for India and Russia to strengthen their relationship. That has been the case since 1947.

23

u/Altruistic_Bank_1552 Congressi 1d ago

Maybe now dumb Indians across the political spectrum will stop deepthroating Putin and Russia.

I will say even the Israelis have benefited from the anti-Indian racism in the last 3 years because it has helped take away some of the heat on them. So stop sucking up to Israel and deepthroating Netanyahu as well.

Russia has been using bot farms in North America and the EU to sow divisions and discord ever since 2014, when it annexed Crimea, but really stepped it up since 2022, when it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In the EU, they courted, supported, and funded Eurosceptic political candidates and peddled massive anti-immigration sentiment (mainly targeted at North Africans and Arabs primarily in the 2014 to 2019 period with the civil war in Syria and ISIS, which caused a big wave of immigrants and refugees from those communities). From 2020 onwards, they shifted focus to North America and Oceania and targeted Indians because we were the biggest incoming immigrant groups in countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Russia Today was one of the earliest peddlers of anti-Indian racism on Twitter and other social media platforms.

3

u/dumbass_spaceman 1d ago

Can't wait for the day my countrymen wake up to how evil and pathetic Russia is. It is the time we move on to the "dand" phase with them.

If Russia wants to continue friendly relations with us, their bot farms should stop targeting our people.

2

u/themadhatter746 23h ago

lol, to the Indian mind, Russia supported India in 1971, which must mean that they’re angels who can do no wrong. Indians are the most pro Russian people I’ve seen, more than the Russians themselves LOL.

2

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

Yea RT India’s sole job seems to be to highlight anything an American says about India. I mean they were dirty af always, but this level of psyop getting exposed is nuts.

American Politics subs are down in activity as well.

2

u/Altruistic_Bank_1552 Congressi 1d ago

Russian interference helped Trump get elected in 2016 and for Brexit to happen.

7

u/Beginning_Net5713 1d ago

Wait, what? What could they possibly even gain from these?

Although, a conspiracy like theory could be Russia is desperate for money and China offered a good price to spread anti-India propaganda. Just a shower thought tho.

7

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

Just create a socio-cultural divide between India and USA. The more Americans hate Indians, the more they project that hate IRL.

But it’s nuts. Activity on American Politics subreddit dramatically lowered too.

1

u/taznado 1d ago

Aah might finally unmute non Indian subs

0

u/Beginning_Net5713 1d ago

It affected inside India too. Many Indians here view indian culture as inferior with respect to western culture.

Did any account which were very active in spreading propaganda became silent during this phase?

2

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

That would require digging through, a lot of profiles. The problem is they can be brought back, but since Ukraine is vowing to absolutely destroy Yandex and other Russian data centers, bot farms will be affected even more.

4

u/Known_Chart_1329 1d ago

Russia wants to destablize and weaken America

8

u/Altruistic_Bank_1552 Congressi 1d ago

They want to destabilise Western democracies and end the trust their people have in liberal democracies, leading to political collapse. This isn't targeted at Indians; we were simply a tool they used because we happened to be the largest group of incoming migrants to the English-speaking world after COVID (except for America, but since they followed a single anti-Indian campaign in the English-speaking world, they extended it even to the US).

They did the same against North African and Arab refugees and immigrants in the European Union and against Eastern Europeans in the UK.

3

u/Beginning_Net5713 1d ago

Most of these hate is on western platforms tho? How did anti-bot mechanics fail here?

3

u/Altruistic_Bank_1552 Congressi 1d ago edited 1d ago

You're overestimating Western competence and the greed of these American tech bros.

Musk has time and again supported Russia and bashed Ukraine, asking Ukraine to give in to Russia. Is it any surprise that he has allowed Russian bots to have a free hand on X after his takeover?

The Far-Right in the West is also heavily compromised and in cahoots with Russia because they share similar racist and homophobic views and want to build civilisational ties with Russia.

The US has also regularly blocked the EU's attempts to regulate American social media platforms in their countries.

1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

Not quite. You can look at IG and Reddit as well. None of these are owned by Musk.

Its just standard Russian pattern. Another thing, from what I am reading now, is a lot of bots portray to be right leaning conservatives. That doesn’t mean all conservatives are bots.

They tend to comment and prop up human right leaning influencers on Indian hate, which they then feed on to boost engagement.

Also EU does regulate a lot, but they can’t simply block bot activity because platforms themselves seem to have a hard time doing it.

That also doesn’t mean Russian bots wont do the same on an EU owned and regulated platform.

1

u/fenrir245 20h ago

Bots aren't the only way Russia exerts influence. Tim Pool, a very popular conservative influencer, was literally caught getting funded by Russia to push his rhetoric.

1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

Anti-Bot mechanics itself is hard to implement. They change tactics and patterns. AFAIK Elon was very public about taking troves of bots down initially but then stopped posting about them.

They have mechanics, but they didn’t seem to work.

1

u/EruIluvatar_Sym 1d ago

Why do you think SM platforms want bots to go away? They thrive in the engagement it brings. Reddit is a prime example.

1

u/HzD_Upshot 1d ago

I remember reading articles about how anti-bot mechanisms or anti-hate mechanism were bad for engagement so X and meta started rolling them back and marketed it as making their platforms more apolitical.

2

u/throwaway0845reddit 14h ago

Russians have always had a "white pride" culture almost as much and as terrifying as Nazism. Stalin and his comrades killed more people than Hitler. They were always the real bad guys and villains in this world. Their entire ideology and country is based on mass murder, genocide and if it wasn't for good people, Russia would have destroyed all life on earth with their nukes in the cold war era.

1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

I still dont know how hard was it for X to weed these bots out, that it really took blowing up Yandex’s data centers to actually curb them.

But yea, never really trusted Russia lol.

9

u/Altruistic_Bank_1552 Congressi 1d ago

Elon Musk actively encouraged them because it benefits him. The man has actively supported Russia against Ukraine, lmao, and has asked Ukraine to roll over to Russia.

1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

Not just X man even Reddit. Check this out. r/news’ traffic was down 65% or so after Ukraine took out Yandex’s data center in the Vladimir region.

2

u/charlies_brain 1d ago

Make America Hate Again. It works every time.

3

u/Marwaimusoont 1d ago

Russia wants to destabilize the west, they are promoting all kinds of division in their society.

Indians need to wake up and understand the reality of Russia. Look up how kgb did grey propaganda, at times they even supported their ideological enemies and opposed their ideological allies in a manner that would create further division in the west

1

u/Extension-Past5069 1d ago

Bro one tweet and decades of relationship is gone ?

Are you not even doubting that the Europeans or this Swedish guy MAY have his own agenda?

After all since Russia Ukraine CONFLICT the only thing India has been pressured into is to let go of Russia right?

This same post has been posted on another reddit and the initial comments were from bots as no other commentor had any history but 1000s in karma points god knows how

2

u/Federal_Eagle_6565 1d ago

Yes. But we have to then look at the data and then reject if invalid.

1

u/Extension-Past5069 1d ago

Share the way this data can be validated as true. I know which country causes the most cyber attacks to Bharat, saying this as I have an Idea when people start making statements based on ONE observation.

In this case that ONE observation has no ways to be checked for being factual and is on the basis of a European who have exposed their hypocrisy multiple times but most recently by continuing to buy Russian gas and putting the blame only on us as financing the Russian war machine.

2

u/Electronic-Koala1082 1d ago

if you think russia is with us for friendship then you would be in for a rude surprise if time ever comes.

its like we are with iran for their friendship and not for their oil while knowing deep down how much we hate their religion..

1

u/Extension-Past5069 1d ago

I have already said this in a different comment, during OP sindoor russia was neutral just like we are during the Russia Ukraine CONFLICT

But I think it is naive to start believing one tweet as evidence of a conspiracy, I have already said about the past conduct of EU, so I don't trust them at ALL. After all they had never stopped buying russian gas but kept on targetting us every week and blame us as financing a war that they started themselves.

1

u/RealisticScore671 1d ago

Umm Akshually
Diplomatic relations aside , our closest cultural ties in the Middle East is from Iran. Persian influence and Indian influence in pre-revolution Iran is massive. Even today if you look at most Iranians except the clerical class (who are part of the massive nexus all the way up to ayatollah ) there is a deep shared cultural tradition and there is genuine admiration for our land .

5

u/DioTheSuperiorWaifu 1d ago edited 1d ago

Or it could be Western forces trying to create anti-Russian sentiments.

Yandex is their equivalent of Google, right?
How would it affect hate bots on twitter?

How likely is it that the West turned off their hate bots and wanted to push such an idea?

Or the (testing something) part of the text or account name being Eric(non-Indian name) reducing bot activity?

Or more simply, they are just saying this without any actual data? Like, are we going to trust this on a screenshot of 3 tweets of hem talking inbetween themselves

Is any actual data shared?

2

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

Yandex operates a public cloud platform that rents computing power, storage, managed databases, analytics tools to individuals and businesses, just like Google does with Google Cloud.

They also operate a bunch of other infrastructure and services businesses in Russia, which was why Ukraine is targeting them. Also, Yandex is just one provider, but they are estimated to hold around 11% share of Russian cloud market.

People in tech and independent researchers are basically looking across X and reddit. It’s not just India, but American and European subreddits are seeing far less activity that they generally do.

This one was compelling. They tracked r/news and other subs across three days of attacks on Yandex.

The reddit post that they mention, which is supposed to have the full analysis and methodology.

u/TechnoAsceticIN The Curious One🐟 1d ago

It is very much in Russia's interests to stir up antagonism between USA and the rest of the world.

They are a nasty, shitty country.

3

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

Yea I dont buy the they are good guys shit, just because they sold us oil and defense systems.

-1

u/TechnoAsceticIN The Curious One🐟 1d ago

Well. This sub itself is heavily bot-farmed, but I can't say who's behind it. Probably some liberal group. Who knows.

What weird times we live in!

-1

u/Extension-Past5069 1d ago

Bharat has decades of relationship with Russia and even with then USSR so one tweet by a questionable european is supposed to do what? Make us switch sides? Is their any logic to this or you just believe in cook up stories and fairy dust ? 😂

Europe that is racist towards Indians be it during mission mangal, UK during leicester riots, ireland beating up even kids is to be trusted blindly?

You are posting this on every Indian group, based on one example by a stranger no one has heard of, Bharat is supposed to side with the west who have supplied a military dictatorship of Pakistan with weapons

4

u/Familiar-Ability6383 1d ago

Nobody can spread propaganda like Americans do, these people now whitewash all their racism and shift the entire blame onto Russia

1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

1

u/Chekkan_87 1d ago

What's the benchmark?

1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

Personal Experience lol. IMO anything that said H1B with 200k+ views would suddenly have 50+ comments just basically spewing Indian hate. They would look like Right Wing Conservative people based out of North America on X.

I did a simple keyword search report about H1B, which is down on X, means way less people tweeted about it over 2 days. I dont trust the tool, and more reliable ones are premium.

There is way more concrete data from American and European Subreddits, which most free tools were tracking. Traffic is down significantly.

On X, just look at the comment section in this post by the WH on illegals from earlier today. Fkng nuts. Like comments from accounts that could be deemed as conservatives trolling democrats are basically gone.

https://x.com/WhiteHouse/status/2109649208982835335?sort_replies=likes

1

u/Chekkan_87 1d ago

Did he ever tested with a tweet with similar content before?

Without that how can someone claim anything like this?

1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

This is absolutely nuts. So it was Russia all along?

1

u/Status_East5224 1d ago

Can u pls explain, I didn't get.

1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

I’ll try to explain.

Indians have been facing a lot of anti-Indian hate and racism on X, particularly in discussions about H-1B visas, immigration, or pretty much anything related to India.

Over the past week, Ukraine has reportedly been targeting Yandex’s data centers across Russia. Yandex is essentially Russia’s Google and operates extensive digital infrastructure.

Now, here’s where things get interesting. Since these attacks began, anti-Indian hate on X appears to have declined significantly. Some American political subreddits also seem to be experiencing lower traffic, alongside an apparent reduction in anti-Indian rhetoric online.

This has led me and a few others to speculate whether a significant portion of the anti-Indian hate was being amplified by Russian bot farms as part of a coordinated influence operation, or psyop.

1

u/Status_East5224 1d ago

Hmm quite Interesting. But why would Russia engage in such activity and Ukraine come to our rescue?

1

u/PrimedGold 1d ago

I mean it’s their policy. The more Anti India that perpetuates in the USA through social media, the more that hate is projected on to Indians IRL.

The wider the divide between US and India, the more India-Russia relationship can thrive. Thats been the case since 1947.

1

u/Status_East5224 1d ago

Makes sense

1

u/darkdaemon000 20h ago

Bhai, there is a simpler reason.

Why do you think piracy happens on telegram and not whatsapp?? Because Telegram is Russian. US govt can't control Telegram.

The same is the reason why bots are from Russia. Bots use Russian servers because they are harder to block. Just because the bots are from Russian servers doesn't mean the bots are Russian.

1

u/ActualBit2681 1d ago edited 1d ago

I really do think that people presume something immediately, India also was reported to have MAGA bots. That didn't mean that all Indians were supporting Trump. Similarly them having a few bots doesn't mean that Russia is racist. Also, people who don't know about IR should please shut up. Those saying that "India is just a market of Russian weapons" have no idea what they are talking about. India- Russia relations encompass more than just weapons.

The relations of India's access to Central Asia, access to natural gas, Central Asian influence that isn't made to compete with China but certainly dents it, and similar views on negotiated settlements to conflicts. For Russia, India is a valuable democratic partner when it comes its scale and size, India also shares to some extent of Russia's perspective on world affairs. We are also a partner that isn't clearly in any bloc, this means that Russia can appear as a country that opposes Eurocentric perspectives. India is also involved in many projects in the Arctic as well. India- Russia trade is conducted through the exchange of rupees and rubles rather than the dollar, thus, it also allows Russia to sidestep sanctions.

0

u/jayantsr 1d ago

Its not russia per say but these data centers went to the highest bidders(just like everything in russia) we have to know that russia is no more a country in the conventional sense but a w*ore that sleeps with the highest bidder

1

u/Trollge-2005 23h ago

Currently the highest bidder is speaking Chinese

-2

u/missedOpportunity343 1d ago edited 1d ago

Isn't that a given? Rss works for the USA. They distance India from russians. So Russians attacking Indians isn't an out of the world idea.

American people do hate indians, but not the government. They have their puppets here in power.

So turning off russians stopped racist content? possible.

Change the regime here, and everything will flip 180°.

BUT I wouldn't trust Ukrainians much. This is a multi front war. and Ukrainians are highly racist towards indias, just like americans. So ukrain could also have been the source of hate content.

taking anyones word for anything is foolish

more interesting thing here is that OPs account looks more like a bot account than anything else. check out the posts he has made. his karma.  a random botty mess
