General Discussion It’s that time of year!
It is hatchling season!
They are coming out of their overwinter nests and going to sources of water. If you find one in an odd place or somewhere unsafe and are unsure, please contact your state wildlife and ask them what to do. Most can actually be left where they are, to their own devices. If they are found in the middle of the road, for example, move them to the side they are facing.
Taking any turtles home, that are found in the wild, hurts the ecosystem. The only exception to this would be invasive species in your state. You can contact your state wildlife to see what your laws are regarding possession of invasive turtles like red eared sliders.

Seeking Advice Facebook rescue
Saw this guy in a dirty 25 gallon tank posted on marketplace for free.
Lady said she had him for seven years and just couldn't afford to replace the filter that went out. Said "he just needs a pump, I'll give you everything else you need for him"
I was given a 75 gallon tank, a stand, a bag of 'pond food', and a turtle.
Told me I could get him a platform to be out of the water if I wanted but he doesn't have to have one😤
She said he's a common map turtle and she didnt know mich else about him.
If anyone has any guidance or info on this little guy, please pass it on. We have acquired a temporary 40 gallon tank, UVA & UVB lights, thermometer, canister filter for 97 gal, a tiered basking platform filter for 60 gal, and a turtle deck platform.

Turtle Pics! Koopa the Turtle update
I changed his water right after he was done. He made it all dirty in there XD. After I clean his cage I plan on giving him some fun stuff to do. I will put some rocks in there, give him some stuff to do with it being dangerous for the lil guy, i might use a different water thing if anyone thinks it isnt good enough for him (Hes an eastern box turtle) He is also very well humidified, this pic was taken before i gave him more humidification. I take him on a short walk outside so he can get his vitamin d, and of course i am very careful with him. He seems to be pretty happy and he was running around the water and sitting up loud and proud on his decorations. I managed to feed him a worm which i cut up into small pieces for him and made sure he was at least 80 degrees in there for him to digest. I cant get him lamps for reasons I've stated in my other post. So far though, this little turtle is doing pretty good and im planning soon (because my mom allows it) to put his cage in the sun all day safely so he can get his proper uv without a lamp. I just have to clean his tank first because its FINALLY a nice enough day to do so! I hope hes happy. Gonna get his cage a bit bigger real soon! and once I get a job i'm definitely buying him all the turtle stuff he needs. (lamps, bulbs, even more fun things, better bedding, etc) and since im old enough i'll be able to do that soon. For now, he doesnt seem to be showing signs of anything bad. Whenever it gets a bit too wet in there i change the stuff in there because i dont want mold or fungus to happen. I really hope he grows up to be a big, strong turtle. Trying everything i can for the lil turt. So far, its been going pretty good with all the warmth just having to come from something other than a lamp, and i have multiple ways now of doing that, and hes been eating and Everything is good currently. Thats the turtle update :)

General Discussion Is he in trouble?
Found him (assuming its a him) not moving in the middle of street. I nudged him gently with my foot and he moved a little bit, but didn't actually crawl away.
I moved him off the road and left him the grass, covered lightly with leaves. I also noticed his eye were closed. See images.
If he's still there when I go for my next walk can I/should I take him back with me and try to help him or just leave him?

Turtle Pics! What’s this thing circled?
Found this snapper on a trail today. When looking at this picture I noticed this thing that looks like it’s connecting the shell and foot together. But it might also just be a leaf or something that I picked up with it. Any clue as to what this is?

Seeking Advice injured area below the mouth
Hi. My turtle scraped the area under its mouth. I've already taken it to two veterinarians, and we've tried various medications and even laser therapy, but I haven't seen much improvement. I've also been keeping it out of the water for long periods as part of the treatment. This happened almost two months ago. Has anyone else dealt with this?

General Discussion PSA. Never let your turtle outside or keep them outside unless you have careful planning and have all contingency failsafes.
I lost my female red ear slider I had since 5th grade on August 25 for this very reason. An offhand comment by my mom to place my red ear slider into a pond my brother built. An oversight was the fact the pond was muddy so I can’t see and there was a hole in the fence. After being released across the street by a stranger (he’s Indian approximately 70 years old but got mistaken for Chinese by someone else, sent me on a wild goose chase for 2 days) who made a mistake (and never apologized or tried to help, in fact he doesn’t even live here) it has not been seen since. I don’t live near any bodies of water. When I knocked door to door asking about a missing turtle someone actually said “so is it a toy turtle?” “No it’s a live animal.” A similar case occurred in June 23 in Toronto when a red ear slider owned by Crystal Lam was released into Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club in Lake Ontario by a stranger who, as in my case, made a mistake due to incompetence. This got in the news. Here is the post by the owner.
Most outdoor habitats are inappropriate to house turtles, especially year round if the climate is not stable. Most people cannot distinguish between native and exotic turtle species, in fact most people can’t differentiate between terrestrial and aquatic species. Just about everyone who didn't go out of their way to learn are incompetent in differentiating or identifying animals to begin with. If your turtle goes missing chances are unless you live near a natural body of water with obvious basking spots you are not recovering it. The safest way is to never bring them outside to begin with and if you are adamant in an outdoor habitat build a high wall with a cage covering. If it is in a back yard make sure it is enclosed with zero holes in the fence or gaps. Should your turtle get lost do not rely on eyewitness accounts since most people have no sense of native or exotic, size, or colour. All of my leads from September 5th to October 3rd had been misidentifications.

Turtle ID/Sex Request Painted turtle - midland? male?
Not Western, I'm thinking midland or possibly southern? Between 1-1.5 years old, 4 inch carapace length, so can the claws reliably indicate male vs female yet? Tail and cloaca location also consistent with male

Turtle Pics! In case anyone was wondering, Linguinii is out here living her best life…
At a whole 4.7g, she loves to eat and bask under her heat lamp. Here she’s using one back leg to not only stabilize herself but to also hold herself up a bit off the wood. 😆 look at those little leg muscles work! 💪
