Wearing pajamas in public isn't wrong or disrespectful
There's nothing wrong with wearing pajamas to the store, park, casual restaurant, or really anywhere that doesn't have a posted dress code. As long as someone is appropriately covered and not offending children, there's no valid reason to care what other people are wearing.
People act like wearing pajamas to the grocery store is a personal insult, when really it's the opposite. What is insulting is judging others by what they wear. I'm here to be comfortable, not to please your standards ripped straight out of the 50s.
I've been told my standards are low for this perspective and frankly I take that as a compliment. You should never set standards on how other people dress.

u/TimeDuke 9h ago edited 8h ago
You've built a strawman with this 'personal insult' stuff. That's not what anyone is communicating. So instead, I'll give you a real opinion you can be offended by:
What you look like sends a message to people, whether you like it or not. These might be aspects you can't (easily) change: race, sex, height, a significant mole, eye-colour, accent, whatever. They might also be aspects you can control (to one degree or another): haircut, clothes, grooming, personal hygiene, attitude, eye contact, facial expression, etc.
This has always been true. This will always be true. And while you're absolutely free to go to the grocery store in a banana hammock and a hentai t-shirt, people will judge you for that. You can choose to let that affect your decision-making or not. But it is a reality. And forever will it be so.
However much you enjoyed The Joker, it doesn't change the fact that we do live in a society, which includes social norms, mores, and cues.

There was a post earlier and a guy said he WAS insulted when other people dressed down. I’m guessing it’s about that.
37
u/cameron_cs 5h ago
I definitely feel that way in certain environments. Like if someone is inappropriately dressed for a nice restaurant. Don’t they have any respect for the restaurant? Or themselves?

Yea. I’m not expecting society’s best at Walmart. But even a halfway decent restaurant? What are we doing?

u/TheSandwichBitch 6h ago
My grandma actually thinks people in public are being rude towards her if they're dressed poorly, she will openly tell you that it offends her to think that random strangers in public wear pajamas because they don't care about her opinion on how they dress and she thinks they should because she has to look at it
31
u/FeedbackZwei 6h ago
For what it's worth, I don't care about the opinions of anyone harassing strangers in public for wearing pajama pants.

It’s crazy I think that after all this time her opinion hasn’t softened. Ingrained I guess! I am team pajama bottoms lol

For me, I subconsciously judge people who wear pajamas to the grocery store. After I notice that I feel that way, I introspect a bit and consider my feelings, and then I consciously judge people who wear pajamas to the grocery store.

You’re not wrong but I think you’re maybe misunderstanding OPs post unless he edited it afterwards. A hentai shirt and banana hammock would fall under “offensive” which isn’t what he’s talking about. Lingerie, thin pj pants where a dudes dick is way too noticeable, etc. Big difference in that and just some basic sweatpants and a regular tshirt.
I think it would be weird if someone never wore anything else and didn’t own more regular casual/formal clothes though, but I don’t think that’s what we’re talking about.

There’s a huge difference between going to the grocery store in a banana hammock and hentai shirt and going to the grocery store in sweatpants. Talk about a strawman. If the message we’re sending is we’re tired and we don’t care, good. I’m tired and I don’t care.
Edit: when I dress down Im not internally musing about the Joker and society. I’m friendly, “please, thank you, excuse me”. I’m just also tired and like feeling comfortable. I’m ok with people having a problem with that. I’m just also relieved that I’m personally not perpetually upset over what people are wearing. Or projecting onto them some weird philosophy on society.
4
u/DovBerele 4h ago
while it’s true that things like clothing choices are part of social norms, those norms change over time. that’s why no one is bothered by men wearing hats indoors anymore (except some highly formal situations) for example. that changing has also always been true and will always be true.
wanting to push for those kinds of norms to change in some particular way or another, because they’re arbitrary and inconvenient, is perfectly reasonable, as is celebrating the fact that some of those norms have been seemingly loosening up or arguing against those who want to cling to older, stricter versions of them.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (30)5
u/Chaosmusic 8h ago
Yes, there are social norms, but they also change over time. People no longer wear a dress and makeup or suit and tie to go buy milk. People don't wear PJs to 7-11 to thumb their nose at society. They do it for ease and comfort.
→ More replies (2)29
u/TimeDuke 8h ago
All of that is true. And none of it changes anything that I said, nor what the people around you will think tomorrow when you leave the house.
9
u/Chaosmusic 7h ago
Oh absolutely, as you say people are going to judge on dress, appearance, skin color, etc. But should that be encouraged or discouraged?
4
u/TimeDuke 6h ago
I suppose that depends on the judgement. It’d be a big blanket statement to call it all good or bad.
2
u/Chaosmusic 4h ago
That's fair. Judging on race, gender, sexuality, etc. should definitely be discouraged. I'd like to think that was pretty universal but judging on a number of YouTube videos it isn't always. Hygiene, on the other hand, definitely affects other people (speaking as someone who has spent time at conventions). But clothing and hair, I really don't see the big deal.
18
u/schecter_ 1h ago
Well as I see it, wearing a pijama to places sends a message “I don’t care enough about this, I just want comfort” and that’s ok, but you can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Either you care or you don’t. Wearing a pijama outside your home shows lack of caring so you can’t be angry when people perceive you like that.
4
u/gardenofidunn 30m ago
I think it’s also important to remember that another association with pyjamas is that you haven’t washed or changed since you went to sleep. And often people wear the same pyjamas for multiple nights. In my culture, people aren’t supposed to wear bed things in the communal spaces as historically that was how things like bed bugs spread. While some social etiquette things are arbitrary, I don’t think you can blame people for perceiving someone in pyjamas as someone with poor hygiene practices.
13
55
u/System_Resident 8h ago
A lot of people say that their clothes is one part of how they express themselves so I guess people take it as a message of not caring and sharing that message to the public. Also, I’ve heard some day that wearing your pajamas/indoor clothes outside is gross since you bring it in your bed. I just want to know where they get the fancy fleece pajama pants sets from
14
u/PomeloPepper 7h ago
Not sure why, but I've always thought of pj's as day wear as being childish.
3
u/Zromaus 2h ago
You’ve been taught to think that by society
2
u/SnooHabits6942 1h ago
No, it’s because kids throw a fit about changing their clothes and it’s not worth it to get milk from the store. But they’re 5, so throwing a fit about wearing actual clothes is age appropriate. And that doesn’t apply for school, parties, or any other activity. At any adult age, being unwilling to change into proper clothes when leaving the house is 100% childish.
26
u/megatropian 7h ago
For me it's also about wearing indoor clothing outside. If I went to the shops in my pj's, I'd come home and change anyway cause they'd have gotten dusty and dirty. I'm not sitting on y couch or getting back in bed with them on anyway so why not change into outside clothes then change back?

only time im ever concerned abt what someone else is wearing is either if they got a whole tit hanging out, their dick hanging out (which i’ve seen happen 3 times already which is concerning) or if their clothes have slurs on them. otherwise i don’t care bc it’s not my business. i wear pajamas going out when i want something comfy to walk down the road, i sleep naked so it’s not like they were worn all night or anything

u/AlternativeIce4955 8h ago
I don’t think wearing PJs in public is wrong or disrespectful, exactly. But it does suggest — fairly or not — a certain carelessness / laziness / immaturity to me.
I think people who take a little time to put themselves together - even if that just means jeans and a T-shirt - are showing more respect for themselves, and that, in turn, makes me feel more respect for them.
Also: even though people who wear PJs in public probably didn’t wear them to bed the night before, the thought always crosses my mind, and..ick!

Nah. There was a time when people and society as a whole had some amount of class. Ultimately I support your freedom to do so, but you're just advertising to the world that you're a sloppy person and I think it's human nature people will judge you for it.
It takes all of 3 seconds to throw on a pair of pants and not be a slob walking around in your jammies.
11
u/Goldfishyyy 8h ago
Nobody gives a fuck if random strangers think they have "class" or not. Looking down on someone for dressing comfortably is a lot less classy and more obnoxious than wearing PJs to the gas station, which negatively affects exactly 0 people. It takes 0 seconds to mind your own buisness

Good unpopular opinion. Upvote.
Now the reply: It's trashy and makes you look trashy. Have some pride in your appearance. First impressions last. If I see someone dressed trashy, I immediately think your judgment or opinion on anything is suspect at best. No one is saying dress in a suit. But If you look like you just got out of bed, its a bad look.
That's the problem with a lot of people nowadays. No one seems to have shame anymore.
25
u/ben_thenine 7h ago
I don't give a fuck what strangers' lasting impression of me is when I'm trying to get a loaf of bread and a carton of eggs on a Saturday morning. It's not a job interview. You will never know "my opinion on something" because I will never talk to you or see you again.

Story time
I was running through Arby's after my kids were in bed and was only planning on the drive thru. There was a beautiful sunset and this couple was trying to get a picture of them with their baby by using the camera timer on their phone. I looked like a damn bridge troll with my hair pulled back, an old hoodie, pajama pants, and socks with flip flops...normal socks with the flip flop just there. I apologized profusely for my appearance, but still offered to take their photo so they could all be in it easily. I'm glad I could help, but God I was embarrassed for how I looked.

We have bigger fish to fry than wearing pajamas. We live in a country where 70% of the population doesn't care enough about themselves to not be overweight or obese. So we're not really in a place to be judging how others dress when we're majorally unhealthy and mistreat our bodies.

Not only do I agree with this unpopular opinion, I participate in it lol. I DGAF what I look like running errands. Someone is judging me for sweats or yoga pants or no bra while I’m grabbing groceries? Says more about them than it does about my so called slob-ness. How is my slightly disheveled too causal appearance any of your concern? Mind your own business people. And I just had a baby 6 weeks ago and you better believe those last couple months of pregnancy and my current wardrobe are the last things I care about right now! The idea that we need to always be put together or we might offend someone’s granny at HEB is insane to me.
31
u/Spkpkcap 8h ago
It doesn’t affect me in the slightest but I am judging you based on your appearance. Same as I would do to anyone. A man walking down the street in a suit? I assume he works in a nice cushy office. Pj’s? I assume you’re lazy. Like you couldn’t bother to get dressed? If you’re fine with silent judgment then all good!
7
u/emi_lgr 4h ago
It’s not even the PJs for me, it’s that if someone rolled out of bed and decided not to change, what else did they decide to skip? They probably didn’t shower, because people don’t shower and put their PJs back on to go out. If they didn’t bother changing, did they brush their teeth? Wash their face?
6
u/Appropriate-Power-87 8h ago
Same. I make silent judgements, and I also have the problem of not realizing when my facial expressions are showing my inner thoughts. I would never say anything about someone wearing pajamas in public, but my face might show my opinion about it.
5
u/Lucy_Sterling 1h ago
Hey, the sloppier the general public looks, the better dressed and put together I look by comparison.
4
u/junkeee999 43m ago
People make judgements based on appearance. Fair or not it’s just a fact. You are free to dress how you like. And people are free to make assumptions from it. Pajamas in public says to the world you’ve pretty much given up on making an effort in anything.
14
u/Mental_Table_9265 7h ago
There’s nothing inherently wrong with it, but the optics of someone in their PJs in the morning or late in the evening in public is a lot different IMO than during the middle of the day. I wouldn’t say it’s disrespectful though, just makes you look like a bit of a bum. But who gives a shit what strangers think?
3
u/Legitimate-Repair156 7h ago
with this take though, you have to remember that not everyone starts their days in the morning and ends in the evening. many people, including medical professionals, who are some of the most important workers in our society, work evenings and nights. i close at a grocery store, so i wake up around 1pm to get to work by 2-2:30. i show up to places in pajamas midday because for me, it’s the start of my day. i feel as though many people forget that a lot of people don’t work 9-5, but are still just as productive as those who do (i’m not trying to be disrespectful in any way i’m just trying to introduce a different angle!)
→ More replies (1)6
u/Mental_Table_9265 7h ago
Nah that’s totally valid, and one reason why my brain doesn’t look at someone sideways for it. I was just saying that’s the optics of it to some people. It’s very superficial. I assume we’re mainly just talking about something equivalent to sweat pants and a t shirt anyways, not stuff that wouldn’t be offensive or inappropriate around kids like OP said.
15
u/Magic_Man_Boobs 8h ago
Honestly people that get upset at someone wearing PJs in public is like the perfect litmus test for whether or not they're someone who's respect or approval is worth caring about.
These are the same people that would have made a stink about jeans being worn back when they became common outside of being work pants, or would have complained about women in trousers.
I hope they keep being vocally opposed to it because it makes them easier to avoid.
→ More replies (1)15
u/Impressive-Thing-483 7h ago
Yeah I’m surprised how many people are genuinely upset at the thought of someone wearing pajamas to the store lol. Some people just go through life bothered I guess. I keep seeing the argument that your looks are judged whether you want them to be or not, but I don’t really see how that’s a factor if OP/other people are saying they don’t really care?
I go to the gym in sweats and then will hop over to the store. I’m not gonna change just for that. Same with early flights—why would I wear jeans on a plane when I could wear sweats and a hoodie lol. My comfort is more important to me than how I look at all times. I personally haven’t really had anyone be rude to me about it or give me a dirty look or something, to my knowledge lol

u/BigMoneyChode 8h ago
Do people actually approach you at the grocery store for wearing pajamas? I doubt it. Honestly, no one really gives a shit what you're wearing. Pajamas do make it seem like you're wearing the same clothes you slept in which is considered lazy. Most people get dressed before going out, even if that means throwing on sweatpants and a t shirt.
10
u/BrokeABowl 9h ago
is this actually an unpopular opinion? i’ve never dressed up to go out to run errands and even to restaurants every now and then. i go to uni and am often in trackies and just tshirts, which seems to be the norm here.

This is 2026. I believe in freedom of expression, and I think in a broad, social sense, people should be *allowed* to wear whatever they want.
But manners maketh man. Humans are a ritualistic species. Playing pretend is good for our mental health. The death of social rituals untethers us from reality and from each other. Basic expectations for what is or is not decent to wear, or say, or do in public is sort of a foundational aspect of society.
I have a higher opinion of people who dress nicely. It doesn't even have to be in a popular way. I dress in archaic fashion and wear cloaks and poofy shirts because Im a fucking weirdo. Various subcultures, like goth or punk, put a lot of time and effort into the things they wear because they understand that the clothing they put on is a method of self-expression, it says things about you.
It definitely says something about you if you literally can't be arsed to put on pants when you leave your house.
3
u/Bottom_Feeder834 4h ago
I don't think I've ever cared what another person wears in public. Be naked for all I care, doesn't make the slightest difference to my life.

So you are going to crawl back to your bed in park/beach/store filled clothes?....ok
Edit: also pijamas tend to have less (or lesser quality) pockets...since you are not expected to have "stuff in your pockets" while sleeping...they are just overall worse clothes for "actually living".
Even gym wear is a preferable choice if you are just in the "comfortable above else" camp.

There were studies among prisoners of war in WWII that showed that the prisoners who still shaved their faces and combed their hair were way better off mentally than the people who just went through the motions without worrying about their appearance.
Not caring about your appearance is a sign you may be struggling mentally and it can lead to depression. If you believe you look great in PJs and feel just as confident, go for it. But I can see a lot of people just doing it because they are lazy and don’t want to put in the effort, and that isn’t really healthy to do on a regular basis.

u/Apart_Shelter_5722 8h ago

There’s no dress code. I’ve seen people walk in a grocery store in stilettos and mini dress and also in a bikini with a see through cover up (I live in Miami) pajama are comfortable and covers most things. Plus if I have to rin to the store that closes in 10 minutes for some bread I’m going to grab my keys and go I’m not going to sit there and find a cute outfit, do my makeup and hair to look good for strangers...just be glad I took off my bonnet and face mask lol

There's nothing MORALLY wrong with wearing pajamas in public, of course, but it does convey an image to people that your own existence is worthy of less dignity. You can be comfortable AND presentable. There's lots of wiggle room there.

I don't really think it's a sign of not having class or whatever. That's a silly idea to me.
But I cringe at the thought of wearing your bed clothes outside where it's presumably far less clean than your bedroom.
Wear sweatpants and a lazy sweater all you want for all I care. It's just the thought of having what I wear in bed come into contact with a germ-infested door or something that doesn't sit well with me lol
4
u/strivegaming22 7h ago
I been saying this. I personally don’t go out in pajamas but I will go literally anywhere in sweat pants if it’s allowed. Comfort is a top priority to me and I never understood why businesses for example make their employees wear nice pants like would ur employee not be happier and work better if they could just what they felt comfortable in. I mean I get needing the company name for some jobs but like idgaf if my waiter or waitress is in a pair of sweat pants, jeans, hell if they wanna wear a suit or a fancy dress they can that’s they’re business not mine

If your jammies don’t cover your body parts appropriately or they smell like your BO/bed, you shouldn’t wear them in public.

A guy I know told me a story about when he was at a low point in life, drinking daily, not looking after himself, he bumped into "the one that got away" whilst he looked like absolute trash. After he got himself sorted out he always walked out the door looking ready to meet the queen.

It looks tacky asf, I will say that. Will it impact my opinion of you? Probably not. But we cannot undo the fact that it looks tacky.
But there are also bigger fish to fry and more things to be offended about.

I personally don't mind it that much, but I do think that being well-dressed and knowing how to dress appropriately for different occasions is part of having good manners. Most places and occasions don't have an explicit dress code, but we generally know what's expected based on the situation. For example, most people wouldn't show up to a job interview in sweatpants and a tanktop, even if there's no official dress code. My school didn't have a dress code either, but there were still certain things you were expected to know were appropriate or inappropriate to wear.
I think part of social etiquette is understanding that different situations call for different levels of formality, even when nobody explicitly tells you what to wear.
Personally, I see pajamas as something meant for home. I wouldn't even feel comfortable answering the door to a plumber while wearing mine, because pajamas feel quite personal to me, almost like underwear. Obviously, I don't think wearing pajamas in public is inherently disrespectful or wrong, and I'm not saying everyone has to dress up whenever they leave the house. I just find it a little weird.

Hey, regardless of social norms, you’re free to dress in public as you like, BUT, that does not negate our freedom to judge you for your choices.
Sound fair?

Some people care about how they present themselves, and yes, I know it’s all a construct. Most things are.
1
u/Able_Distribution250 8h ago
Its more so caring about how others present themselves that's the issue though, but at the end of the day it's their issue and not mine 🤷

u/Fine_Smile73 8h ago
I don’t give a fuck if you wear sweats to the grocery store. I’m just not going to. I feel better when I’m put together.
2
u/Able_Distribution250 8h ago
Hell yeah, I feel pretty put together with sweats and a hoodie so ya know, home is where the heart is lol
4
u/SnooWaffles413 8h ago
I agree with this wholeheartedly. Everytime someone complains about this I want to shake them by their shoulders and tell them to shut up.
The only time I have set standards are for dress code specific places, and if you're a parent idc if you're in pajamas but it's your responsibility to make sure your child is dressed for school appropriately and also clean.

Is this unpopular? I think the majority of us have gone out in PJs. I’ve never heard of someone saying it was disrespectful. I mean, if you’re wearing PJs to a classy restaurant that has a dress code, then yeah. But otherwise I don’t see an issue.
Who do you know that has taken it as a personal insult?

This opinion has my autism stamp of approval. Somone wearing clothes that are comfortable to me shows they don't care about all these dumb social and societal rules. They're capable of making choices that go against the "norm" in order to improve their own experience. It's brave, confident, and would get warm nod of mutual understanding from me.
2
u/thatsingingguy 4h ago
Improving your own experience is not and has never been a perfect good. Nor is breaking social norms. And I say that as someone waiting on assessment / diagnosis, who breaks social norms all the time.

Exactly!! I've always viewed it like this as well
(Yes, I have autism too. I've never been a fan of arbitrary societal norms... especially ones as pointless as judging people based on the style of cloth they choose to adorn themselves with)

I think the people saying, “who cares if I’m wearing sweatpants/track pants” are confused. No. Pajama bottoms. Long pants that are the same material as boxer shorts. I see others in here saying fleece pajama pants, which isn’t as bad I suppose, but if they have a crazy design that makes it obvious that they’re meant to be slept in, it’s a bad look.
Totally normal in my opinion to wear track pants or sweatpants while running errands, but maybe others disagree. I do it all the time for whatever it’s worth.
And no one actually cares if you decide to go out in pajama bottoms. It doesn’t affect me in any way and I definitely don’t feel disrespected. But just know that a lot of people assume you’re lazy and kind of a slob. If you can’t be bothered to throw on a pair of pants that are meant to be worn while out in public, what else are you not bothering to do? It’s also mostly teens I see doing this, so I don’t judge them as harshly - but I definitely judge adults who can’t take 2 minutes to put on jeans or at least sweatpants to run out to the grocery store

Damn comment sections actually shocking me. Wouldn’t expect Reddit to care so much about a made up social rule that affects no one.
One that really made me laugh was “dressing properly is about showing respect for other citizens”

Grow up, show respect. Especially to yourself.

Never understood the correlation between clothing and amount of respect/ self-respect
To me, a better example of someone lacking self-respect would be poor hygiene, not taking care of oneself, living an unfulfilling life, etc
I would even argue that a person has MORE self-respect if they have the confidence to reject conventional social norms in favor of wearing what they want

Personally, I think it’s stupid and gives of laziness and a lack of self respect. How hard is it in throw on a coat or something. The ones that get me are those in full makeup.
Dressing appropriately for the situation you are in is a life skill surely. I’ve interviewed younger people for jobs and they showed up unpresentable with clothes needing a serious iron or wash. I see pjs in public as the same level as turning up for an interview under dressed and unprepared.

u/knockingonhellsdoor 8h ago
You can wear whatever you want but can't complain if people judge you. If you dress like a slob people won't have any respect for you

I live in a super clean home with good hygiene. If you’re willing to define someone based off sweatpants and be that wrong, it defines you. Judging a book by its cover if you will

Sweatpants are not pajamas.

u/Zromaus 8h ago
Look up sweatpants pajamas, they absolutely can be lol

u/Traditional_Yam9806 6h ago
Dude, don't be pedantic. We all know what ya'll mean. Sweats are not equal to pajamas in most cases.

u/activationcartwheel 7h ago
It's not a question of whether you're adequately covered. It's more a question of personal dignity.

u/HistoryDisastrous493 8h ago
If the store is less than 5 minutes walk from you then kinda fair enough. But wearing pajamas to a park or to a restaurant? You should be ashamed

It makes me think this person is going home and wearing the same clothes they had outside and spreading outside germs into their home
I don’t think it’s disrespectful but I think it makes you look unhygienic, along with the typical “lazy” or “sloppy that goes with it

u/Accomplished-House28 6h ago
It's dumb, but there's nothing inherently wrong with it, and of course respect has nothing to do with what you wear. And even if it did...how would it disrespect you personally?
2
u/Abablion 4h ago
Let's assume I agree And let's assume we mean public places and not the grocery store 5 minutes down the stairs
I don't particularly care but its weird to see a full grown adult walking around in a onesie in the middle of the day in like a mall

u/BobbyP27 2h ago
The point is that when you are out in public, you have no idea who you will run into and who will see you. Wearing pyjamas in public sends a clear message: "I don't care about my appearance and I am happy for everyone to perceive me as a slob with zero standards". Perhaps 80% of the time that doesn't make any difference. You go about your business and strangers think they live in a place full of filthy slobs. But there are the other odd occasions. You happen to run into your boss, your client, your customer, your kid's schoolteacher, the guy who will be interviewing you for your next job. Now they will see your face and think, "there goes a slob, who doesn't care about how they look". These perceptions come with consequences. Perhaps not today, perhaps not tomorrow, but they exist.

personally my only criticism with pajamas in public is the amount of grime that would accrue on them would eventually spread around your living space, public places can be real nasty.

u/shadingnight 7h ago
I don't care what someone wears as long as it isn't exposing themselves. I will silently judge someone, but that is about it.
However, some of these comments are acting like your choice of attire is equivalent to going out into public in your birthday suit. It isn't that serious.

Sweatpants are just absolutely comfortable, and one of my pairs has pockets that zip up

I’m used to people wearing them in the grocery store.
I will silently judge you if you wear them to a sit down restaurant of any sort.

I live in a college town. All the girlies wear pjs and slippers to do literally everything.

u/MineCrab568 6h ago
I used to care cause my parents would comment on it but why does it actually matter what people wear? People that judge are just wasting their time feeling like that, why make negative assumptions when you can just acknowledge something, not care and go on with your day being happy? Let people live their lives as long as they aren’t hurting others.

I personally don't care but it was odd to see people walking into the retail store I worked at wearing the pajamas they sold after 12pm. But I also saw people wearing underwear sets as clothes so I rather see the pajamas. Does come off like you just rolled out of bed though, which I witnessed to be the case when I attended college morning classes.

I get it and I agree with people needing perspective that others don’t all work the same hours, but I’d like to add a caveat that also is changing by generation.
Casually I think people should dress however they want but generationally we see people refusing to dress up for occasions that call for it out of respect. I’m talking about things like going to see a play/opera, going to see a speaker, going to meet with someone who has made time specifically for you (something like a mentor, not just seeing a friend), dressing up is a way of saying you respect their time and it’s a little sad that that has been/is starting to be lost
There are also events like plays/operas/gallery openings/fundraisers that traditionally were formal but now people are showing up in leggings and sweats, is there not a happy medium that can still be found?

I mean... If you go into a bank/credit union dressed like that you might not get that loan. 🤣
