Discussion Warning: Fake GitHub Repos Distributing Malware Under Developer Names
Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app.
In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped.
A few reminders:
* Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps.
* Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust.
* If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option.

Question Is having an antivirus for Mac pointless, or does it actually play a vital role in protecting against modern cyberattacks?
I have always heard the old argument that Macs do not really need any extra security because macOS handles everything out of the box, but lately I have been wondering if that is still true with how sophisticated phishing schemes and online scams have become.
Between downloading random utilities and managing personal accounts across multiple devices, I started looking into whether adding a dedicated antivirus for Mac is actually worth it for peace of mind. I have been checking out a few different security suites like McAfee and the likes. RIght now, do you still rely solely on built-in Apple security, or do you run a full suite to be secured?

Discussion M1 iMac Issues Have Begun
I am both sad and excited. My 2021 M1 iMac display started getting glitchy this weekend after smooth sailing since I got it in 2022. I feel as though an issue like this shouldn't happen so soon but I know electronics can go bad anytime and without warning. I have run the Mac nearly non-stop since I got it.
I'm sure it could likely be fixed but my nearest Apple Store is over 2 hours away since I live in rural Ontario, Canada.
So, I've ordered a new M4 iMac which should arrive in mid-November. I've read rumours a new iMac could be released later this month but I'm sure the M4 will suit my needs great since my M1 was still performing well enough for me.
I'll hang onto my M1 and maybe one day I'll get it fixed. Have display issues been a common issue with the M1 models?

Question Do I need a laptop stand for my MBP?
I recently purchased this Macbook Pro M4 Pro 16’ 48GB variant for video editing.
I have noticed that its fans are very quiet and it doesn’t get that warm, so do I need a laptop stand for it? I personally like the first layout. It gives more clean and minimalist vibes and I like when monitor and laptop are aligned, and in second image it’s on a stand and I can’t keep it in front of the monitor cause then it blocks the monitor screen.
Which setup is best for my MacBook’s long-term life? And do you guys use laptop stands?

Discussion Running MacBook Pro as a desktop.
Hi all,
Does anyone here use a MacBook connected to external monitors as their daily work setup?
I’m considering getting both a Mac Studio and a MacBook, but ideally, I’d prefer to use just a MacBook for both desktop and portable use.
I currently run three external monitors and do mostly heavy web-based multitasking.
For anyone using a similar setup, how has your experience been? Any downsides to using a MacBook as your primary workstation?

Question Is 16gb good enough or do I need 24gb?
I'm looking to buy a new MacBook. My opinions are an air with 24gb ram or a pro with 16gb. My usecase is probably more suited to 16gb, and the screen, sound and port selection is nice, I'm just concerned that 16gb won't get me very far later down the line.
Is sacrificing 8gb ram worth the upgrade from air model to pro?
(Usecase: emails, web, browsing, spreadsheets for work, lots of bloody spreadsheets...and some light gaming, I play around a bit on WoW)

Discussion Is buying a Refurbished MacBook Air worth it?
Or stick with new? In my particular case I could get refurbished this week only because there’s no current sale anywhere for new models thanks to prime day ending and techtober for BB as well. I don’t want to wait till late November for deals again, may have to wait till doorbuster deals for Best Buy. What do you think, refurbished now or wait for sale?

Question MacBook Pro with Studio Display: Clamshell or Extended Monitor
Buying Studio XDR Display soon. Been using M1 MacBook Pro Max without a display since 2021. Looking forward to a clean desk setup with the MacBook in a clamshell desk stand. Probably only need the one larger display but since have only had one small display for years, unsure how to consider options.
Anyone use their MacBook as an extended monitor; and if so what use cases do you use it for?
TIA for comments either way.

Question Is it possible to install old versions of apps (2011) on my modern Macbook?
I have this old DVD, through which you can download the 2011 versions of PhotoShop and Premiere Pro (Elements 10). As far as I'm aware it's totally unused.
I attempted to install them today, but I wasn't able to. The install button has a 🚫 prohibited symbol on it. When I clicked on it, I received this message:
"Install" needs to be updated. The developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of MacOS. Contact the developer for more information.
My Macbook is modern and fully updated, so I'm not surprised by this at all.
Regardless, I'm wondering if there's any possible way that I would be able to install this software onto my Macbook.
Hopefully this is the right subreddit for my question!

My Mac MacBook Pro M5 Pro battery health dropped to 96% in just 2 months
Recently, I've got myself a MacBook Pro M5 Pro 14-inch display. Now, I am noticing that the battery capacity is slowly decreasing from 100% to 96%.
Below are the details:
- Age: About 2 months
- Battery health: 96% (from 100%)
- Cycle count: 55
- Charging pattern: Usually keep the battery between 20% and 80%
- Usage: Normal usage (coding mainly)
The capacity did not change immediately. It kept decreasing by 1% each time. I know that I should properly take care of the battery but such a decrease in capacity at this age is a little bit worrying.
Also, I came across a process named duetexpertd. I would like to know if it could affect the battery drainage or not, since I don't know if it's the reason or not.
Has anyone faced a similar problem with a new MacBook? Should I assume that this problem might occur because of recalibration done by the system or there's some problem with the battery?
Do you think it's better to contact Apple Support or just to wait for several more weeks?

Old Macs MacBook Pro 2015 noises
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi gang,
I upgraded this old MacBook a few years back but now want to repurpose it. I can't remember if it did this or not at the time of upgrade, but it's making a weird grind-y noise every six or seven seconds. Any idea what it could be? Is it something I can fix if I buy the proper screwdriver to get inside? I was thinking maybe a fan bearing, but I've never heard one in a desktop behave quite the same way and I can still hear the regular fan noises go up and down with load. It runs an SSD too.
As of the attached video there is no OS installed, and it was happening in MacOS before that and Mint after - continues for a bit with the lid down too. Background noise is the washing machine, not the fans. Sounds to me like it's coming from the right hand side (when using the machine) from around the return and backslash keys.
Thanks!

Question MacBook Air M5 oder Pro M5/M4 für CAD, Bühnentechnik und Uni?
Danke euch!

Question Studio Display vs Studio Display XDR
Hi all, I have a mac mini and am looking for something to pair with it. I'm 90% sure I want either the studio or XDR and not some other brand because I'm a big fan of the display quality of the too.
I know this is going to sound stupid, but what I'm most torn between, and what I care most about, is the refresh rate between the two. For context, I'm coming from a PC background and my previous monitor was a 240Hz OLED for gaming. I KNOW refresh rate DOES NOT matter for casual browsing (which is what I'll be doing), but I can definitely tell when something is 60Hz and when something is not - and it lowkey bothers me. I also have a macbook pro with the promotion, so I am definitely used to higher refresh rates. Idk, it's just so much smoother.
I wish I wasn't spoiled with higher refresh rates and my eyes would accept 60hz, but they don't 😭
So in a last ditch effort, how bad of a decision will it be to pay double for some extra hertz 😭 I plan on using the mac mini and display as a workstation for browsing, streaming, etc. No graphic works, color grading, etc.
~~or if theres another monitor that you are a reallyyyyy big fan of, I'd also love suggestions. But I am really drawn to the mac displays because I think the quality of their screens are super nice and like none other. I know the benq ma270up is frequently paired with the mini, but it just doesn't do it for me sadly.
THANKS 🤠

Question MacBook Air M5 (24GB) vs. base MacBook Pro M5 (16GB) for video editing
I’m deciding between these two:
MacBook Air M5: 24GB RAM, 512GB SSD
MacBook Pro M5: 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD (maybe 24 ram)
My main demanding workload is DaVinci Resolve Studio, editing 4K iPhone Log footage with 5–6 video layers, color grading, chroma key, animations, and occasional rotoscoping.
Would the Air with 24GB RAM handle my workload comfortably, or is the Pro’s active cooling worth the extra money? I don’t want to overspend on performance I won’t use, but I don’t want to regret choosing the Air either.
Which would you choose?

Question Underscrolling and Overscrolling in Native Apps
Unfortunately ever since updating to MacOS 27 I found that scrolling while releasing my fingers tend to feel laggy or isn't continuous. Curiously this doesn't happen in Safari or Photos, but almost every other native app has this problem (including documents in Preview and Mail). The phenomena is best describe as this: an unexpected pause or a shorter-than-expected scrolled distance occurs while I'm scrolling, and the next scroll tend to compensate by going down (or up) more than I anticipated. Such scrolling roughness disappears when I change the refresh rate to 60Hz, so I don't think it is a hardware issue. Is this confirmed to be a MacOS 27-exclusive promotion bug, since I only noticed it after this upgrade? This is on my M3 Pro MacBook Pro by the way.

Question All videos exported on my mac have horrible sound quality
I was making a video of just a static photo and I put an audio over it. It sounds fine inside the video editor (imovie) but when I export it the sound quality is horrible. I have triple checked the export settings and have them at the highest options. I even used a different app called shotcut and I still get the same problem so I think it has something to do with my computer. I restarted my computer and it still has the same problem. (Macbook Air 13 inch M5)

Question Any recommendations for getting my macbook pro mid-2015 retina refurbished?
I'm wanting to get a refresh (battery replacement, fan replacement etc) on my college computer so I can keep using it as a secondary pc. I have a windows desktop for gaming etc, but I love having my macbook for traveling and playing lighter games (stardew etc) in bed lol. I don't have enough money to justify buying a new laptop, and I also have a bunch of special stickers on it, so I'd really prefer to keep using it if I can. I don't have the time to do the work myself so I was hoping to pay someone to do it for me. Any recommendations would be appreciated, thank you!!
