Off Topic [OT] Fun Trope Friday: Undead Laborers and Folk Horror!
Welcome to Fun Trope Friday, our feature that mashes up tropes and genres!
How’s it work? Glad you asked. :)
Every week we will have a new spotlight trope.
Each week, there will be a new genre assigned to write a story about the trope.
You can then either use or subvert the trope and/or genre in a 750-word max story or poem (unless otherwise specified).
To qualify for ranking, you will need to provide ONE actionable feedback. More are welcome of course!
Three winners will be selected each week based on votes, so remember to read your fellow authors’ works and DM me your votes for the top three.
Next up… IP
It’s October. The time of falling leaves, jack o’lanterns, and candy. And blood… so much blood. This month will be focusing on all things horror with maybe a treat or two to sweeten the pot. Please note this theme is only loosely applied.
"Humanity is mind-controlled and only slightly more conscious than your average zombie." — David Icke
Trope: Undead Laborers — When someone uses The Undead, such as zombies and reanimated corpses, as a cheap labor force for simple but time-consuming tasks, such as mining. From a business perspective, using undead workers is a very cost-efficient strategy: zombies and skeletons don't need to sleep or eat, never get sick, and are unlikely to spontaneously form undead trade unions due to lacking free will. As such, it is one of the least morally objectionable ways to use Human Resources, although it always depends on where exactly the dead are coming from and what the local culture considers desecration.
Genre: Folk Horror — Folk horror is a subgenre of horror that draws on folklore, rural settings, and ancient rituals to evoke fear and unease. It often explores themes of isolation, the supernatural, and the tension between modernity and ancient beliefs.Includes folklore elements, rural settings, and rituals.
Skill / Constraint - optional: Someone trips in some form.
So, have at it. Lean into the trope heavily or spin it on its head. The choice is yours!
Have a great idea for a future topic to discuss or just want to give feedback? FTF is a fun feature, so it’s all about what you want—so please let me know! Please share in the comments or DM me on Discord or Reddit!
Last Week’s Winners
PLEASE remember to give feedback—this affects your ranking. PLEASE also remember to DM me your votes for the top five stories via Discord or Reddit—both katpoker666. This is a change from the top three of the past. In weeks where we get over 15 stories, we will do a top five ranking. Weeks with less than 15 stories will show only our top three winners. If you have any questions, please DM me as well.
Some fabulous stories this week and great crit at campfire and on the post! We had 18 stories, so we’re back to five winners. Congrats to:

Writing Prompt [WP] You are standing in a bar when a beautiful woman with flowing golden hair and white dress captures your gaze. "Don't even think about it." The multi-tentacled bartender says. "What is she? An elder god? Great old one?" The bartender swivels a giant red eye to you. "Worse, she's an Angel."

Writing Prompt [WP] "Nuclear weapons didn't work, our most advanced technology did nothing. How did you stop the Horror from Beyond the Stars?" You shrug. "I gave it a steam account and a credit card with 1 million dollars."

Writing Prompt [WP] After the maid single handedly dispatches your attackers you confront your parents about giving you a secret bodyguard without telling you anything. As it turns out, they didn't know she could do that either.

Writing Prompt [WP] When you activated the machine to serve and protect humanity, your colleagues were worried it may backfire. The machine works just fine, they were worried for nothing. Outside of humanity's sight however, the machine is a Skynet for aliens.

Writing Prompt [WP] You are a dragon living on the outskirts of a village. They often give you treasure not because they fear you but so you would protect them. You have guarded this village for centuries.

Writing Prompt [WP] Superpowers were engineered by the government for a war. The war is over. Now, the soldiers who wield them are being hunted down as weapons.
I have been writing stories about a world like this for years. It’s a dark sandbox full of shadows. I’m quite curious to see what other writers pull from it.

Writing Prompt [WP] You pause last week’s security tape as the wide eyed creature appears for a single frame, staring into the eyes of its victim. Glancing away then looking back, you see the creature in the paused video frame now has its head turned to the camera, and its eyes staring directly into yours.

Writing Prompt [WP] As counter-productive as it may seem, older healing potions are actually more effective. Aging in a cool dry place like a dungeon can often do wonders for a potion.

Writing Prompt [WP] The people are petrified of witchcraft, but as a witch yourself you are not in any more danger than any ordinary citizen, since non-witches are utterly inept at recognising witchcraft. You do hate seeing innocent people suffer though.

Writing Prompt [WP] You and your twin brother have been accepted into the magic academy. Aside from the snobbish nobles, everything should be going well... if it weren't for the fact that you don't have a twin, but a skinwalker who failed to take your place because you're immortal. What could possibly go wrong?

Writing Prompt [WP] "Okay class, flip your Holographs to 'the Ancient American Civilization.' Quote, 'After the War, the People created Congress; She had no body, so She created Her Siblings: Justice and Enforcement.' Now, can anyone remember what their Founding War Myth was? C'mon, we just studied it yesterday.."

Writing Prompt [WP] I never knew when they'd show up; never knew where they'd appear, or necessarily why. I could never stop them or convince them to bugger off either, though I'd come to anticipate their spontaneous interruptions to my otherwise repetitious life.

Writing Prompt [WP] A gateway opens in Australia to a dangerous new world. At first, it seems like nothing is different. Australians are used to dangerous wildlife after all. Nothing that comes through could be that much worse right?

Writing Prompt [WP] This may well be the worst scroll I've ever seen a student produce. Not only are there seven errors in punctuation and grammar, you have misspelled the name of the entity you are attempting to invoke. Honestly, I'm tempted to let you cast this just to watch what happens to you.
